Woop, I finally managed to setup a mailserver on my VPS :D
what did you use?
what did you use?
Dovecot and Postfix, configured with Webmin.
I can't connect to eduroam networks using gnome 3. When I click the access point in the network applet it simply does nothing. running nm-applet seperately doesn't work either.
How can I debug or fix this?
I've been a pure Debian/Ubuntu user for my entire life, setting up first Arch machine.
Anything I should known off-the-bat that will save pain?

If you want wireless, make sure you install all the wireless packages during the initial installation (wireless_tools, wpa_supplicant, etc.). Setting up wireless during installation and setting up wireless for your system are separate processes. The beginner's guide mentions this as "a very common error" and having made it myself, I can tell you it's a real headache.
My own question: is there an easy way to change the number of desktops that awesome has? I tried changing all instances of screen.count() to a variable, but that didn't work at all. It seems like the only way to do so is to go through rc.lua and manually change any code related to the number of desktops.
I have just recently took the plunge and decided to have a go using linux.
I have spent the good part of the weekend foraging around and managed to build a computer out of some old and new parts, but I am having issues with linux itself.
I try to access the linux command shell using the ctrl+alt+f1 shortcut and the image it brings me to is corrupted, it is just bars across the screen of multiple colours. What is my best bet to do from here?
Also none of the shortcuts here seem to work, I can only open and close the two tabs in the top right of the ubuntu desktop, the one with the options to shutdown your computer and a messenger type of window I think?
Thanks for any help, I am having fun doing this! :)

Nah, purely going to run it as a server. Try Exim around a bit ehh

what distro are you using?
For some reason, my Arch refuses to ping to the outside world.
Pings fine to the gateway, my DNS server and itself.
Can't check if name resolution is working, but since it even refuses to ping to 8.8.8.8 (connect: Network is unreachable), I don't think that's the issue.

Ubuntu, going to redownload it and burn it on another computer, the hardware I am using is fairly old now so that might be an issue too.
As for the keyboard shortcuts issue, I can get them to work fine until I select the top right part of the navbar, I cant seem to navigate back out nor close any windows (alt+f4 right?) once I am in the top right section.
Hey all, I'm running Arch Linux and I'm trying to zip a file to upload to mediafire, how can I zip the file? It's a minecraft world file, and I need to back it up. Any filehost will work.
EDIT: Never mind, I'm dumb
-snip- wrong thread :\
My third machine is going back to Debian from Arch tomorrow, can't be arsed to fight with the network shit.
Ugh, I really don't feel like recompiling my CentOs server to allow more than 1024 file descriptors. What monster would put in a hard coded limit like that!
What shell do you guys prefer? (ksh, csh, bash, etc) Personally, I used bash for the longest time (since I got into Linux 5-6 years ago) but recently I've fallen in love with zsh.

I use zsh too.
zsh is pretty much master race
[editline]19th April 2011[/editline]
but I'm pretty sure everyone else uses csh or bash, until now me and PvtCupcakes were the only zsh users
What advantage does zsh have over bash?

I just stick to bash.

spelling correction is a big one that comes to mind, but you have to be careful with it ( http://www.facepunch.com/threads/949185-Due-to-ZSH-s-silly-autocorrection-I-have-overwritten-an-important-file.?highlight= )
There's also bytecode support but you're probably not going to use that too often. Same with it's support of scientific notation, multi-dimensional array tables, floating point arithmetic, and filename generation.
most of the other differences are personal preference or extended features, not completely new things.
My dad listens to old time radio shows and he just heard this ad: http://filesmelt.com/dl/Linux.mp3
I totally want to install Linux Cream Polish :v:
I have Wine for running Windows programs on Lubuntu, and it works well for Minecraft and things. Could I download Steam and run Steam apps off of it?
[editline]19th April 2011[/editline]
And have it work somewhat well, at least.
yes

Yes, but each game works to its own degree. Just because it's a Steam game doesn't mean there's a standard for them. Refer to the AppDB for each game to check if it's playable or not.
In Gnome 3 (I had this problem in Gnome 2, too), there are some windows that are too tall for the screen. In openbox, it would add a scrollbar to the window to make it fit. Is there anything like that in Gnome or am I screwed?

Uh. Minecraft is in java, and there's native java libraries for any flavor of linux, plus a native launcher that can just be launched from a .sh script.
