• Mechanical Keyboard Megathread v4 - *click clack* BUY A SWITCH TESTER

My friend recieved a $40 Razer rubber dome for Christmas and knowing it exists anywhere in the world makes me want to rip my own throat out with a railroad spike If they weren't using a laptop I'd probably have already gifted them some cheap 70% with cheapo Kailh switches. Just to make the pain go away. [editline]5th January 2018[/editline] Does anybody else experience a phenomenon when after a while, your mechanical keyboards stop feeling amazing, but rubber domes start feeling like absolute ass?
Cherry blues just sound so plasticy, and browns are a major improvement in that regard. Browns do feel a lot more like sticky linears though.
let me tell you the good word of the kailh box switches https://www.novelkeys.xyz/product/novelkeys-x-kailh-box-heavy-switches/ they have a metal bar that bends and snaps in them to make the click and its nice and sharp, the heavy pale blues are so smooth [editline]6th January 2018[/editline] the black board has the pale blue boxes and the other has cherry blues

Just waiting for the Thick Clicks to come in stock somewhere in the EU before I get a load for my next board, though, cause the shipping from the US is a bit steep off Novelkeys. I suppose I could get some from kbdfans too, but I'd like them to arrive this side of the next ice age. You also forgot to mention that you can get Kailh Speeds with the click bar too, which actually sounds a bit nicer than the boxes in my opinion.
Aight, so currently I use 3 mech keyboards with Kailh Blues because... well... they were $20. They're way too fucking loud when typing for extended periods of time, and O-rings certainly don't help. I rapidly switch between these, shitty rubberdomes and laptop keyboards as part of my job so I can get used to anything, but I do like tactile switches and I'm looking for something with less actuation force and noise. Any suggestions for 87-key boards for under $50 or so? (I wear through keycaps like hell so I don't like spending a lot on keyboards).
Any recommendations for cheap mechanical keyboards?
i got a royal kludge RK61 recently, its an awesome little bluetooth board for $40 https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Multi-Device-Mechanical-Rechargeable/dp/B0731H35J8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515266477&sr=8-2&keywords=rk61 i needed something wireless and this thing is a crazy value
Sorry for the long post but I felt I should explain my question properly so it's clear what I'm asking. Ok so I have a switch based question that simple numbers aren't helping with, and although I would really love a nice large tester I can't shell out for one unfortunately so I thought I should ask people who might have first hand (ha) experience with them instead. I'm gonna be getting myself a new keyboard as a 26th birthday present next month because I need an upgrade since I've had this one for about 7 years. I love the feel of Cherry Blues (which this has) but since I do a lot of Youtube stuff now, and live in an apartment and all that, the sound is an issue. So Browns are my next best bet, still get the tactile feeling I want, but my microphone only picks up a light tap rather than a sharp click. Here's my question, I've never tried Clears, and I've heard they are even better on the strong tactile bump without the loud click that I want, but they're stiffer. How are they, and how stiff? Here's the problem: Due to a medication I take I have some neuropathy in my hands, my fingers are a constant hard to describe combination of numb and tingly and awful. I used to be a pretty fast touch typist but as a result of this I have to look and I still make mistakes pretty often. My hands simply don't react like I am trying to get them to, and I can't put consistent pressure on the keys, since I can't actually feel the keys very well, so I sort of have to guess how hard I am touching them, especially when gliding around the board quickly. Or trying to. I can tap a key so lightly it doesn't register and then bottom out a key loudly in the same stroke but they both feel the same to me so it leads to lots of missed keystrokes and such. So are Clears too stiff for someone like me? Is holding W to go forward in a game tiring after a few minutes because of the spring? Basically I am just worried about the extra force needed (since I don't know how much it is) amplifying the typing problems I've developed. Browns are pretty soft, and Clears sound really nice, I just don't want to end up on completely the wrong end of the spectrum with something so stiff feeling that my already agility-challenged fingers fail to obey me even worse due to a bad switch choice.
I wouldn't use Clears is your case because they have an increasing force the more you go down. The actuation point is 55g and the tactile point is 65g but the bottom out is like 100g. I'd find a switch that has a more consistently flat force point.

Actually, that sounds kind of like a non-linear version of a Black, which I have felt, and found a little stiff for my tastes. Thanks for the info!
If you really want, and plenty of people do this so there are guides too, you can buy Clears and mod the spring. Objectively, Clears do have a better bump than Browns because it's physically larger and people like that but they also don't like the spring because of that constant linearity of force. If you swap the spring you can make it however light or heavy you want. It takes some effort but if you really want it there is always an option for it with mechanicals.
I deeply regret getting browns and not clears because I have way too much of a tendency to bottom out.

Lighter spring on a Clear body. I don't know if my shaky numb hands could manage replacing like 108 tiny springs anymore but it's something I would have jumped on about 2 years ago, and it still sounds interesting to consider.
There are MX Clear clones which have lower bottom out weights (and are smoother because Clears still use the old tooling). Off the top of my head you have Kailh Pro Purple (2 weights), Outemu Ice Purple (2 weights), Outemu Purple, Zealios (4 weights), I:C Halo switches (2 weights). You can also use some kind of rubber to immobilize the click jacket in a clicky switch, which is called jailhouse modding. If you want silenced tactile switches then you can basically choose between Zilents and KBDFans Aliaz switches. Also check out Haata's plot.ly for switch force graphs, which will give a better idea of how much force a switch requires to press.
Those pale blue box switches look nifty as fuck. [editline]10th January 2018[/editline]
I've actually heard of that, something called Ergo Clears correct? Damn, Razer actually had a functional 4x scale keyboard built for CES using Kailh Big Switches [t]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/97862298214858752/400497643681480704/02lkdafug3901.png[/t] Each letter keycap is 3 inches square :v:
That's like $2000 of keyboard, give or take. [editline]10th January 2018[/editline]
Those pale blue box switches look nifty as fuck.
Just remember that they're pretty linear, the tactility is mostly from the bar hitting the housing.
Can I sleep on it
It would be extremely painful
Mhhm the noise when you roll over would be nice.

Quick couple of questions guys. Anyone have any experience with Varmilo VA88M? I am really keen on buying one as they seem to be both most classical looking and customisable with a UK layout option. What is the build quality like? Will it be customisable further down the line? I keep reading different things with regards to keycap profile in Varmilo, some people saying they are custom and some saying they are classic cherry or some other profile and I cannot be sure. Also any ideas on how they do when shipping to UK? Got in touch with one of their sales reps through email and they said they do ship with duty paid but this takes longer to arrive (not sure how or why) how long would I be looking at and how trustworthy would they be? Finally I think I am going to go for MX Clears, I have bought a large testing pad and feel its the best. Clicky ones are fun but I feel like I would get tired of the sound quickly. I like the browns but they really feel too light to my fingers. Anyone care to share experiences with them?
Varmilo are great quality, and yes most standard cherry keycaps should fit. You can buy them directly in the UK here so you don't have to worry about the importing, but they're still ordered on demand so still a wait. [editline]14th January 2018[/editline] holy fuck PUBG keycaps why

As far as I know Varmilo use standard OEM profile caps, which isn't really relevant unless you're looking to only replace part of the set on it.
Do you guys have any recommendations for mechanical keyboard brands in the 25-60 dollar range? I prefer cherry blues, but I've also wanted to try Gaterons. My only experience with a mechanical keyboard is a an off brand with Kailh black switches, which were ok, Although I prefer something more clicky.

I was only after a nice MX Blue-like typing feel with backlit keys. I didn't really care that the backlight was rainbow LEDs and had all sorts of patterns. It was just the cheapest full-size mechanical keyboard available. I was very pleasantly surprised by the build quality. I was expecting a cheap plasticy piece of junk barely more stable than a laptop keyboard, but this thing has a very solid metal frame. I can easily type on it all day without it feeling flimsy at all. Key layout is perfectly normal, nothing funky or weird. The Fn keys are reasonably well laid out. I like that volume is on the f9-f11 block, closest to the Fn key itself, so one-handed volume changes are simple and easy. F5-F8 holds the media playback keys, while F1-F4 is generic application launches. Nifty features are a Windows Key lock (Fn+Windows), and a total keyboard lock (Fn+F12), which can come in handy if you're stepping away from the keyboard for a while, or if you plan on putting something on the keyboard for whatever reason. The lighting system is far more amusing than I thought it would be. Fn+Insert toggles the different modes, which include breathing and wave motion modes, as well as on or off. Additionally, it has a couple of reactive modes, which can be either a "breadcrumbs" mode where each key you press lights up for a second or so before fading out, and a "ripple" mode, where each keypress sends a wave across the whole keyboard. It's good fun. There's also some "gaming" backlight modes, which only light certain keys based on games. There's one for Counter Strike, LOL, and DOTA, for example. I rather like the Outemu Blue switches, which are clones of the Cherry MX Blue, of course. They're a little bit stiffer and somewhat louder than the genuine article, but I find the feel really pleasing. I can type on this for hours without feeling fatigued, though the noise can get a bit much sometimes. Overall Score: 9/10. For the price, you can't beat it. Way better value than my Blackwidow Ultimate 2016. Pros: 1: Super solid construction 2: Excellent key feel 3: Amusing backlight will entertain for minutes at a time 4: Price Cons: 1: No Macro functions 2: Fn key combos aren't backlit. 3: No separate LED for the Windows Lock or Keyboard Lock combos despite being doubleshot. This can confuse you if you left it locked and forgot. My cons are really nitpicks at best, as for the price you really cannot get a better keyboard, even at list price of $40. Here's a link to the Amazon page for this keyboard. (non-referral)http://a.co/bZoHcD5
Still using mine to this day at work. My boss and my boyfriend both have one and they love them as well.
I'd honestly get that but it isn't available here in my country unfortunately. That stopped me from ordering some keycaps from massdrop because I know the customs here are a bitch to process through. I'm currently deciding between a Obins Anne Pro and the Magicforce 108/82.

So I have an old QuickFire TK or whatever keyboard. The one with the numpad that has arrow keys that have to be toggled. Well it stopped working and I had no idea even after pulling it apart. Turns out it works if the stupidly bright blue LED backlighting is on... It won't be replacing my current CM keyboard though. :v:

I think that the matrix layout for the Quickfire TK is on the r/mk wiki, so you could stick a pro micro in there instead.
im looking for a cheap wired mech keyboard for aroun 40~60 usd
