How do I repair install? Also, do I need to backup/worry about anything?
forgive me if im wrong, but when i had to re-image i forgot to take the disk out, it will ask to either re-install or to repair any major systems. I dont know for sure if it will wipe anything but its never bad to back up your system. im also not to sure on the BSoD's but it may be a HDD problem? mine were a bit different (0x00000001E) but i was getting alot before my HDD's crashed. but that is just a guess from an uneducated person...
Isn't that what Chkdsk does? Richard or someone else told me to do that. I have a feeling it is the HDD or the files. I'll wait for more posts. Also, welcome to Facepunch.

I think that is what it does but the disk basically just replaces the files, because if chkdsk may not be able to fix what is wrong. but as i stated last time its just a guess. my goal is to one day be like Richard and know ALOT about computers.
Dude, I totally passed up your SMART results... This is what im getting the gist of the entire drives health: Based off SMART Attributes that are pre-fail or TE. Raw Read Error Rate Lower Value is Better This is pre-fail, problem with the electromechanical components Value: 200 Worst: 200 Spin Up Time Lower is better pre-fail Value: 143 Worst: 142 This isn't a critical value. Just measures how long it takes for the platters to spin up to full speed in milliseconds. Start Stop Count Old-Age Value: 098 Worst: 098 This is how many times the spindle started up and stopped. Reallocated Sector Count Lower is better Critical Value Pre-fail, replace/regen immediately Value: 200 Worst: 200 This is how many bad sectors have been reallocated to the reserved "backup" sectors. Power on Hours This isn't a critical value. Values indicate old age Value: 095 Worst: 095 This counts how many hours the drive has been powered on. The rest are just old age, but indicate this drive is in desperate need of attention. I recommend backing up the device and buying a new one as soon as you can. You can also use a regenerator program like HDD Regenerator or SpinRite. Both do cost a pretty penny.
Crap. How long do I have? What should I do in the mean time? Earliest I can get a drive big enough will be a couple weeks. So just try to stay off of it for as long as possible? Probably gonna get a Samsung F3 Spinpoint. Parents are gonna probably argue a bit, but I'm sure I can explain to them that the drive is faulty and we could lose all our stuff. Thanks Richard! You too Dark! Also to the others that had bits of advice. [editline]2nd June 2011[/editline] You too GoDong! PC Builder buddy :buddy:

I don't think you have a mechanical defect (unless you hear clicking/grinding/scraping/something flopping around like a piece of metal), so your drive is basically terminal. You have more errors indicating surface defects than mechanical ones. I think a HDD regenerator will help you out. I have a WD SATA II Caviar Black 500, and it failed on me after about 1 1/2 years of use. It came to the point that BIOS wouldn't pick the drive up about 80% of the time (Had to make it, chill out for a moment to make BIOS detect it and let it run), and when it did detect and run, windows will run extremely unstable. And upon a hard shutdown, and a cold boot the drive won't return back to BIOS. I used HDD regenerator on it, the damn thing is working better than ever with some minor problems (the arm seems to be loose inside). Hasn't caused me a problem in almost 2 years.
How much are we talking about for an HDD Regenerator? Because my Mom said she might be able to scrounge up some extra HDDs from her coworker who maintains the computers at her office. He's given me a couple keyboards, mice, and even an old Pentium 4 system for free. I'm sure I can get HDDs from him, but if I can't I'm gonna have to: 1) HDD Regenerator 2) Buy that Samsung F3 I've been meaning to get. The F3 1 terabyte model (upgrade from my current 500 GB one) is $60 USD or so last time I checked on Newegg. Would a HDD Regenerator be cheaper?
Spinrite is pretty expensive... more expensive than that new drive, I'll tell you that. But it works fucking wonders.
1) Get new free HDDs from friend *whichever is cheaper 2a) HDD Regenerator 2b) New HDD from Newegg Basically go in that order until I get it working? Also I know you said you don't know how long I have, but will it last a couple days? I'll get my brother's homework and stuff onto my Macbook but that means turning on the PC. It's not like it can die any minute right? Maybe I can squeeze a bit of :fappery: in or no? [sp]Just kidding[/sp]
Like I said Falco, I don't think you have a mechanical failure to worry about. Surface defects are ticking time bombs. It can die on next boot, or die mid day.. or die next week.. or next year. It might not even die (but will continue to fuck with you on BSODs and shit).
If it dies, is there anyway to save it/the data?
If it dies, is there anyway to save it/the data?
Depends on how it wants to go really. but if it does die and you want to recover the data you'll need specialized software that'll also be expensive. Active@ Recovery has a good deep scan but can be really sensitive on CRC errors.
Ok so I'll wait 'till tomorrow to see if I can get free HDDs. If not then I'll look up those HDD regen programs.
if your able to get into windows just back up all of you pictures, documents, etc, onto a flash drive or go out and by some cheap HDD just to have in the time being. when your done you can probably RMA the drive depending on the age. i have a WD Caviar Black 1TB and its running wonderfully. its my second and my first basically exploded(i dont blame the company) WD was very quick when it came to my RMA. took about a week or so, but i also lived fairly close to the warehouse...

His SMART results from smartmontools are absolutely fine. smartctl always says Pre-fail/Old_age, has no relevance to the actual state of the drive.
Where are you getting this from? His SMART results from smartmontools are absolutely fine.
Grabbing it straight off his SMART results and my SMART cheat sheet. Perhaps something changed or I fucked up somewhere on my cheat sheet... but they're also indicating pre-fails off the smartctrl log there too...

The disk is in good condition. Where smartctl says pre-fail etc., it's listing what the value represents generally, not the current state of the disk.

But you're right, the raw data values are indicating a good drive :/ So its not the RAM, its not the HDD... windows doesn't know it has any issues. Hes getting Named Pipe, CD, and HP file system errors at the end of the month it seems. Well, this puts me a wits end. The only other thing I can think of is something running in the background thats causing this.

Falco, you can just give me a log of all the files. In the run prompt, type in "tasklist > C:\List.txt" without the quotations. copy and paste the contents of C:\list.txt here.
Also a HijackThis log could be useful for us

I tried typing it in CMD and the search thingy on the Start button.
bump
It's not working. I tried typing it in CMD and the search thingy on the Start button.
Erm, what happens?
Nothing [editline]3rd June 2011[/editline] I'll try again real quick [editline]3rd June 2011[/editline] Well when I type it into the Start menu something that looks like CMD pops up for 1 second then closes. Also it appears that the BSODs really do seem to only happen with APB. I just played COD4 for an hour, nothing wrong. Also the fact that APB is in Open Beta with numerous accounts of crashes reported not just on their forums but on Facepunch as well could mean it's just the game. I asked in the APB thread in MMO Section if anyone else BSOD'd. All that I've heard were just freezes or crashes to desktop. That doesn't explain last month's BSODs though.
Odd, hasn't BSOD'd or had any problems for the past 5 hours or so. [editline]3rd June 2011[/editline] snip took care of Pando Media Booster Anyways, why are there 3 separate instances of Chrome running according to Task Manager? I'll post a screenshot to give you a better idea but basically there are three "chorme.exe *32"s in Task Manager, each taking up a noticeable amount of memory. [editline]3rd June 2011[/editline] I only have one window of Chrome up as well
Chrome uses multiple processes to increase stability. Also if that command isn't working, just post a HijackThis log.
I used to get tons of BSOD's, but then I just raised the CPU voltage. : | yeah... [editline]4th June 2011[/editline] I'm so good at overclocking

Also ever since I got rid of Pando Media Booster I haven't had any problems. [editline]4th June 2011[/editline] And when were my last BSODs? I forgot was it April 1st? That's the day I got Pando Media Booster.
I get BSODs everyday. My BCC code is 0x1e. What do.
