Is there a monitor out there that actually has GOOD blacks, colors, etc and doesn't cost a fortune?

And while you're at it use the money you saved to buy a nice sound system that will have a much more significant impact
$200 on a tn is a gigantic waste of money
1. fuck ninja'd
and 2. he doesn't want anything IPS or CRT so unless he has $2k sitting around he's kind of limited in his options
in the end it's his waste of money so whatever
I just bought one recently from him and it works great, only slight signs of aging (picture is slightly dim) but who knows maybe some aren't dimming as much.
If you're extremely lucky, you can find one of the last CRT rework stations and get a new cathode gun part installed. The only part that really causes the picture to get dark is the material that is dissolved to make the cathode ray beam eventually disintegrates.
All that's really required is to break the neck off the tube to put the part in, then vacuum it back down and meld the glass neck back on. It's really easy to do with a rework station, not so much without one.
Keep in mind you might get faint horizontal shadows due to it being a Trinitron tube (the design of the aperture grille can cause very faint horizontal line-shadows, but really only noticeable 'sometimes'.)
All Trinitron tubes have tungsten brace wires on the aperture grille. 15" tubes have one wire 2/3 the way down the screen, and 17" and up have two brace wires that split the screen into three sections, with the middle section being the biggest.

The thing about Ebay CRTs is that you have to pay absolute ridiculous shipping. For one of those to be shipped to me, it'd cost $63. It's easier to hunt locally (like on CL). I found all three of my Trinitron tubes on CL, and they're absolutely astounding. All of them are super bright with only one of them having a minor issue with the flyback transformer wearing out (which can be fixed easily enough.)
I'm not interested in a CRT. I currently have a TN monitor that I am satisfied with overall, but wouldn't mind an upgrade simply because its rather old and I wouldn't mind going bigger and better. I already have a nice sound set up for my personal needs, and having a large CRT not only looks ugly but simply would NOT fit on my desk. I don't care honestly if I can run it at 16:10 resolutions technically, because it doesn't change the fact that the phsyical screen size is and always will be 4:3.
I'm not saying CRT's are bad, but really - be honestly realistic here. Nobody in their right mind would in this day and age would ever buy a CRT unless they had no money or were a nostialgic/perfectionist PC hardware enthusiast. Nither apply to me, and I'm not interested in anything involving CRT tech, as for my purposes it would easily be one step forward and two steps back.
And white noise is a rather easily audible high frequency sound that I've forever noticed from CRT's and older non-panel TVs. If your older or your hearing is fucked in some way, you can't hear it (as its too high frequency).
Seeing as this thread has run its course and theres no more serious input to be offered, I guess there's not much else to say on my part.

This drives me crazy too, but disappears at 85hz and higher

Aww that's not funny, don't try and fuck him over that badly man. $300 for a 1080p TN panel monitor? I can't believe they're able to sell them at such huge prices. If someone is shelling out $300 for a monitor it should be this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236201
there is virtually no reason to not get an IPS because it's about the closest you want in commercially available panels.

Except he wanted good blacks.
Except he wanted good blacks.
there is seriously nothing wrong with the blacks on any decent IPS panel monitor (especially if you, you know, calibrate it properly and don't leave it on "HURR DURR 100 BRIGHTNESS 100 CONTRAST 100 SATURATION LOLXD" mode), and sacrificing so much just to get a marginal at best improvement by buying VA is stupid

The vacuum tube itself isn't making the noise, it's the flyback transformer. All transformers create electromagnetic fields, which cause the coil winds to vibrate and create noise, commonly called coil whine. If the manufacturer was shit, they didn't properly dampen the coils (usually with a heat resistant silicone epoxy, sometimes just plain glue) then they vibrate and make noise.
Different refresh rates and resolutions cause the electromagnetic field generated by the transformer to change, resulting in different whine characteristics. Computer power supplies can have the same problem, but they usually sound different since they use different switching frequencies.

Since you seem to know so much, what would make my 4-year-old TN panel have a slight buzzing when displaying certain colors? Usually lighter grays, but not whites.
Ghosting is bullshit, and a thing of the past. I have a 1024x768 LCD that has a 16ms response time, and guess what? NO GHOSTING. Gaming and color vibrance is nothing short of amazing. Ghosting only happens on those super-ancient LCDs, like the first color ones that ever came out.

When my LCD is turned off, the built-in power supply whines at a high pitch and keeps me awake, even when It's truely clicked OFF with the power button, and not in power-saving mode. I have to unplug it before bed or it drives me insane. I already suffer from tinnitus in my left ear.

LCDs aren't exempt from power rectification just because they don't contain a tube. LCD screens have an inverter board that also has inductors and transformers that can be improperly manufactured, or just be failing.
You can buy new inverter boards for LCD screens, but they can potentially cost more than the monitor cost new.

Response time =! ghosting. Response time is the time it takes for the picture to be transferred from the video card to the screen. Ghosting is caused when the pixels aren't being refreshed fast enough and the frames start to blend together.

uh ghosting is definitely still around and is noticeable on nearly every single LCD
show me this magic LCD that has no ghosting with a fucking 16ms response time and I'll suck your dick

higher the response time the more ghosting, generally

I second this.
I remember ghosting hardcore when I switched from my CRT, I think it's just one of those things you get used to.

Just because you can't notice it doesn't mean it's not there.
Ordered, and recieved my Dell 2412m eIPS LED monitor in today!
Wow this thing is nice! It feels so much bigger than my older 20" Acer Tn monitor. How the monitor sits on the desk and functions just reeks of quality too - perfectly stable swivel, really nice matte bezel on the edges, super simple to put together (the stand just clips on securely), adjustable height, etc. It looks great with my black desk, speakers and keyboard.
It's very bright and vibrant color wise and I don't get any backlight bleed. I've not noticed any ghosting at all either. I love how the colors in the picture are uniform all the way around the image, so things don't appear more or less washed out. Really great and sharp picture quality overall.
There is one "big" downside though compaired to my TN - this thing has good contrast, but terrible viewing angles on blacks/dark scenes. If you are sitting close to the monitor and are viewing a predominantly dark scene, the edges and corners of the monitor have this "reflective black" look, where it washes out all the details. This makes it so dark scenes have terrible contrast outside the center of your viewing angle up close, to the point where if I am between 1'-2' away, the corners of the picture are almost 100% washed out. I can only "fix" it by sitting back a little to widen my FoV on the monitor.
This isn't a problem at all if the image is predominatly bright or colorful, which is where this monitor really shines. And its only an issue if you usually game or watch movies within close proximity to the monitor, as otherwise blacks look just fine "at the right angle".
Overall though, huge upgrade and I'm glad I got this monitor :)
lol why didn't you just get the 23" and save $80
lol why didn't you just get the 23" and save $80
The 24" version is 16:10.
The 24" version is 16:10.
Pretty much this
My sister/roomate has a 22" monitor (technically 2" bigger than my old one) but it actually looks smaller cause its 16:9
Plus the 16:10 works better with my modding and graphic work I do as well
$80 for 120 pixels
o ok

really though 16:10 is radically different from 16:9

Yeah, that's probably the IPS glow I was telling you about, it's a known issue with IPS. The only time you can get rid of it by purchasing an IPS with an ATW Polarizer on it, which removes it. Usually a lot more expensive, but they rob you of your wallet just for a special piece of a plastic sheet.
16:10 feels bigger for the same diagonal size it seems from my experience.
I do indeed hate it when people would rather have 1920x1200 over 2560x1440 or something because it's 16:10 versus 16:9. Yes, I actually witnessed that conversation. He wanted more height... so he went with a smaller, lower resolution monitor because it wasn't as wide. Blew my mind.
Personally, I'd prefer 2560x1440 at 30-32" since I produce video content all the time, but so far the black bars aren't bothering me.

Wish it could be done after it was purchased. I'd spend a pretty penny to get rid of IPS glow on mine.
just spent five minutes trying to turn my monitor on, it doesn't like the cold
time to shop around for a new one
