i like 1680x1050 aswell
Update on my situation is I'm all set to order the parts, I could even do it now ... but someone is trying to convince me to just get a gaming laptop. I'm not too keen on it though, I guess it has it's upsides like being portable but not so sure if it'll be better than a computer that's build specificly for my purposes. One upside is I can stretch my budget to maybe $2000. So what do you guys think, is a hand built $2000 computer better than a $2000 gaming laptop? At the moment I'm still pretty keen to make the build that bladerunner originally suggested, with maybe a few upgrades seeing as I can stretch the budget a bit more.
In my opinion, gaming laptops are only worth it if you go to a lot of LANs. And usually they are bulky and the specs are average, compared to a desktop with the same budget

If you want to go on facepuch and watch tv then get a cheap laptop.
I'm currently building a PC for a friend. Ive checked Umart, and a friend suggested checking MSY technology for price comparison, and MSY is a bit cheaper, but has a bit less parts. they have a PDF parts pricelist. if you live near one, i reccommend that you check out the prices. MSY website: http://www.msy.com.au/

Where abouts in Australia do you live? I know I keep saying this to people but have a look at this website (www.itestate.com.au) I bought all of my PC parts there and they were cheap and they had excellent delivery, good range of products. Plus they also got 2nd place in PC Authority awards! xD But I would have a look.
I ended up purchasing a laptop (This is before I saw your post Blarg - sorry), But somehow I hope I made the right decision. Most might disagree but I thought hard about it and I do need it for other purposes other than gaming and a laptop suited those purposes. The reason I asked for a gaming computer was because when I'm home, 90% of the time, I'm gaming. I'll be using the laptop primarily for gaming, but it'll also satfisy other purposes. That isn't to say the help given to me wasn't appreciated, I appreciate all the help, infact the way I set out looking for the right laptop was by basing my search off the information I was given here. So although the project of a build didn't follow through this time, I still appreciate the help given, so thanks guys.

Eh, usually getting any new laptop/computer will make you happy. as long as it runs the games you want, the portability is always handy
Sorry maybe i should rephrase that, I spend 90% of my time whenever I'm on the computer, gaming ... yeah. Kills time.
Since he's be helped, MY TURN!
I ended up purchasing a laptop
Gaming laptops are a bad idea. Usually because the same amount spent on a pc/desktop will produce much better results.
But somehow I hope I made the right decision.
I'm sorry to say, you didn't.
The reason I asked for a gaming computer was because when I'm home, 90% of the time, I'm gaming. Why wouldn't you get the better desktop for the same price as the laptop, if your only going to use the portability of the laptop 10% of the time. I'm not flaming.. But that probably wasn't your smartest buy.. But it's your money.. Enjoy your laptop
What laptop is it. :| [editline]01:18PM[/editline] It would have been cheaper to build a PC then use the rest fo the money to get a cheap netbook.

Well sounds like a laptop isn't in favour. Well my laptop is pretty good with games and I'm not a hardcore gamer so hopefully it will do the job with games that I need it to do and it is. Well for those wondering it meets the requirements for gaming I guesss ... Intel core i7 1GB video card windows 7 4GB ram Got it for $1599AUD And no worries Mokkan13, it's good to get honest opinions.
