The PS3 was only announced in 2005, meaning you would be around 5-6. :v:
Sorry, I meant Playstation in general. It's been fixed.
i have a madcatz 360 controller..
probably the worst purchase i have made, it broke after a month, sticks don't sit level (so it will move you ingame without doing shit) none of the buttons work either
I got a logitech F710 wireless.
Worst purchase in my life, the controller gets incredibly glitchy if it's more than a foot away from the reciever, the left analogue stick is broken due to a firmware fuckup (logitech confirmed to be working on a fix, last update was before christmas) so it only gives readings in 8-axis absolutes (basically 100% deadzone), making things like aiming and walking slowly next to impossible, the right analogue stick works perfectly though. Thetriggers are also a bit akwardly placed and the springs in them are a bit too hard so I end up cramping my fingers after a while.
Stay the fuck away from this.

I have one too, and it's been the best controller I've ever had. It's build quality is very good, so you must be hard on your things to break it in just after a month... I've had mine for 4 years.
Yeah stay away from the Logitech F controllers in general, they're plagued with issues.
The F710 has notorious connection problems and random batches of F710s, F510s and F310s have the deadzone issue with the analogue sticks.
Until all the problems are confirmed fixed, get like a 360 controller or rumble-pad 2.

I mean, if you have one without the analog stick issue, good on you. But from what I've heard, the number of users with issues is far too great.
I use my PS3 controller and use a program created by a Chinese company called Motion In Joy. It made HAWX a bit more bearable to play.
Seems the overwhelming response is a PS3 controller. Will an unofficial one do?
If it works on the ps3 it should work. I have a lava glow I got from ocean state job lots(idk what stores like this are called) and it works fine with motion joy. it even has a tubo button for emulators. but the best bart about it is that its brighter than the sun!

but I think a 360 controller would be better if your computer is like mine and has the bugcode usb BSOD when you use motion joy.
Get a Logitech pad for cheapness and quality
Get a 360 controller if you like the shape of it and for wide support
Get a PS3 controller if you prefer the shape over the 360 and want the same support
Personally, I use a PS3 controller for 360 controller supported games because I prefer it, and I use my Logitech pad for more precise games like Super Meat Boy.
I don't know about the 360 controller, but all of the face buttons on the PS3 controller are analogue, so you have 6 pressure sensitive buttons plus two analogue sticks, which come in handy when you have games that can support that.

I love my Logitech Dual Action.
I love my Logitech F310, but I don't like how it has analog sticks like the PS3 controllers. I prefer the Xbox controller for some reason.
But it's an awesome controller.
Oh, and no matter what you get, look into a program called Joy2Key. It's a brilliant program, emulates keystrokes and mouse movement flawlessly.

I would have gone for a 360 controller, but I had three main things pulling me away.

I like the Sony layout more than the Xbox layout.

I like wired controllers.

Xbox controller was too expensive for me.
Though everyone I know who owns a 360 controller loves it to death.
Unless you buy a wireless adapter, you need a wired one to use with your PC. It was pretty cheap for me (£27.00, granted it's not that cheap but they only had those new black ones and it's better than £54.00 for the wireless adapter & controller). I love it, it works right out of the box with all my games (I tried the PS3 controller approach and it was a pain in the arse). To be honest, I like the PS3 and xbox layout the same.

I had a Madcatz N64 controller at one time. Clear purpleish casing so you could see it's guts, a turbo button, and looked pretty sweet. The turbo button broke and it's joystick also doesn't sit level. Shame, didn't have it for more then 2 months before it did that. But my brother and I had fun playing Goldeneye in Multiplayer playing "Who can find the spinning guy and kill him first" after we found out the non-level joystick caused some funny results for some games. :v:

Least I think that one was a Madcatz....
I remember having a grey one that also had a turbo button and stuff...
Oh well, I'll have to find and dig through my old N64 stuff and find them.

The layouts basically are the same, the only thing that pisses me off about the 360 controller is the D-pad placement and the bumpers. The D-pad is just awkward to reach after using PS controllers all my life and the bumpers just don't seem to move much.
