Oh do you have to actually make it? Fuck that I was just gonna design it.
If it turns out to be a USB mod will it be required that you pull apart an old drive? Or will we be able to just pull the USB connector off of something else, stick it to a piece of card that is the size of the board and build it around that. I ask because I don't have an old USB drive and can't afford to go and spend even a small amount on one right now.
I'll post a draft of the contest rules soon. The point is to have a USB drive.
First draft of the rules:
• Each participant must document the progress of their mod with photographs. A before, during, and after photo with the name of the participant is required for an entry to be counted as valid.
• Each participant must also post a picture of the completed entry in this thread.
• All images larger than 1000x1000 pixels WILL be put in IMG_THUMB tags.
• The mod must be performed on a functioning USB thumb/flash/storage device.
• All entries must be emailed to in the form of a compressed archive containing all pictures and/or notepad descriptions.
• Maximum of three entries per participant. Please have the common courtesy to submit ideas under one account. If any user is found to be using alternate accounts, they will be disqualified.
• The contest will be held from [START DATE] to [END DATE]. All entries must be submitted while the contest is still open.
• Failure to do any of the things listed above may result in disqualification.
Unofficial rule: Don't gripe about not having money to buy a USB drive. Go return soda cans and beer bottles and buy a $5 drive from your local store.
Determining the winner:
• When the contest is over, a new thread will be made for voting.
• The top ten entries will be entered into a poll.
• The poll thread will stay open for one week.
• The entry with the most votes at the end of one week wins.
• I will contact the winner via private message regarding the prize.

Yea really.
I'm having to scrape what little money that I have together just to get to my first day at uni.
Also a flight to the US and back along with the $5 is more than I would be prepared to pay for a USB drive. :v:
How about best desk, that would be a much better competition.

money.
Also quite boring as there isn't as much scope for imagination

I beg to differ! But yes, money.
And Ajacks would win so you might aswell crown him now.

Although your setup is very cool, I wouldn't call it imaginative. It looks a bit too clinical
I have a p.cool idea for a USB mod already. I have a 256mb drive with linux on, will sacrifice it.
In USB mod, I assumed we were gonna make devices powered using the USB slot, such as a desk fan or a lamp.

That's a really awesome idea. Not much for a contest but a good idea for a project. I like it though I might have to look into that.
I got the design already (in my head).
So, who's organizing the competition?
What's the prize? A medal to identify you as the most awesome USB-modder ever?

Maybe a game on steam? Perhaps?
If you'd bothered to read the rest of the thread you'd know it'd be a steam game or memory stick less than $50
I saw it was posted but I didn't know it was settled on that.. But fair enough. That's actually pretty sweet.
Yeah the winner will have a choice. In the event of an international winner, a Steam game is the only option.
Can we already start posting our entries?

There isn't even an official thread yet, so I'm going to guess no.
I'm going to enter.
So there.
