Hey guys,
I'm running XP atm, is it worth installing the W8 preview before it's full release?
I want to upgrade too it anyway, but just wanted too see whether I should just wait or not
It gets lonely on 32bit
EDIT:
Or should I just get 7 and play safe
Anything is better than xp at the moment. Xp doesn't know how to handle resources, god forbid you have a couple programs set to run when Windows first starts.

But do you think I should jump straight to 8 or stick to 7?
Looking at the reviews etc., the gui looks a bit too tablet-based and I don't like the idea that you have to go into the app screen every time (why they've removed the start button I have no idea). Of course, this could all change by its full release, but from what I'm seeing at the moment it seems a bit counterproductive and slower to handle than on XP, Vista, 7 etc. in terms of switching between multiple programs and going through processes quickly. Not in terms of power, but in terms of the layout - in aero form, I'm sure it's a lot more convenient.
I just don't know if I like it atm. I want it, because I want to have the upgrade to 64bit, but I don't know if it's worth going that high
I think people should stop bitching before they try it out. I had the developer preview which was out before the Release candidate and I loved it, plus people have noted increased game performance over 7. You still have a desktop and everything, you can switch between programs quickly with alt+tab.

The desktop is exactly the same (sans start button), you don't have to use apps, and you can handle windows the same way you did before. The start menu is in my experience as fast as the old one. I'd say get Windows 8, overall, even if you don't like the start menu, it's a better OS.

RT.
what exactly makes it a better OS?
There's a ton of backend changes to the OS. Performance enhancements, hardware support out of the box, driver model changes, etc. Along with frontend changes to Explorer (Ribbon UI), new integrated features like ISO mounting and a PDF reader (I think I saw that). It's just in general more usable and functional.
I've heard that it outputs a lot more power and uses your internals a lot more efficiently. Design wise i'm not so happy (i foresee a lot of annoyance at all the bing/windows live tie-ins) but overall it should run things better.
I just wish they'd kept the metro and aero interfaces separate.
[editline]26th July 2012[/editline]
Also, does anyone know how smoothly it'll run older programs? I know vista and 7 couldn't run a few things, so I'm scared that some of my existing software (especially my older steam games which need dosbox) aren't going to handle too well
what exactly makes it a better OS?
Well, it's faster than 7 in most situations.

To my knowledge there's no bing services in Windows 8. You don't have to have a live account, but since I also use hotmail, it's actually pretty smart. Skydrive integration and so on.
From what I've seen so far it seems all the MS accounts do is allow you to sync up some stuff between any win8 machines, I only just discovered I could use my old Hotmail credentials. In no way mandatory and most people won't need to care.
hopefully google will cook something up that will integrate just as nicely
as well as valve...
those are my main concerns, microsoft forcing you to use their shitty services.
Stop with the forcing shit, no one's forcing you to do jackshit. You can just make a local account, and their email app syncs with gmail as well as other services (to my knowledge). It's really just an extra bonus if you use their services, it's not important to how the OS functions overall in any way.

The reason I said that is because on all the videos I saw, the home screen was always full of bing/windows live integration
It is very logical to think that Microsoft will of course be trying to push you to use their own products, I don't understand your anger toward that. If you can easily integrate Google accounts etc. than that is good, but I'm very sure there will always be lingering programs/uses saying 'you have not signed in' and so on if you don't
EDIT
Horsedrowner - 'dumb', or disagree?
Well, it's faster than 7 in most situations.
Which benchmarks did you use to come up with that?
EDIT: Yeah dotmister, rate me dumb because I'm asking for a benchmark. Stupid children...
Which benchmarks did you use to come up with that?
There have been benchmarks that show that nearly everything in 8 is faster. I recall one benchmark where the one thing being slower is group copying/moving.
Which benchmarks did you use to come up with that?
None, this is in my own subjective experience (clocking certain actions like boot, login responsiveness, application launch, shutdown etc), but google away and you'll find lots.
Related to performance, Win8 has a feature called "Refresh" which re-installs the OS while keeping apps and settings. This will come in handy if it suffers from the same proneness to slow down over time through use.
I've heard Windows 8 is going RTM around now. Any idea when it'll be leaked based on past experience? Also will it have to be cracked first to run?

I have yet to be bugged by a program in that way.

i'm pretty sure it's released on MSDN whenever it goes to RTm so it's pretty much guaranteed to leak

I'm guessing mid-August at the latest. You'll probably be able to run it without activating for a while (90 days maybe?) until a crack is released.

Do people really consider MS services that bad? I think SkyDrive is brilliant, Bing is perfectly fine (if I wasn't automatically wired to google), Hotmail is great, and the Windows Live suite is pretty damn good and gets the job done.
Do other people think that they are good? Or am I just too stupid to see that there are better replacements?
I can't read!
It's not. Can't believe people still believe that.
He is talking about he is hooked to google.
Also I think that Bing Travel is the best thing.
Allright, so I'm trying out Windows 8 in a VM at the moment. The metro UI feels kinda out of place to me, since it looks nothing like the desktop. Apparently the metro UI also looks terrible with Eyefinity: http://www.win8forums.com/threads/eyefinity-issues.316/
I really hope they get that fixed before release, or there's no chance I'm going to switch to Windows 8. I wish there was a livecd i could use try this out properly though. My SSD is pretty much full, and only 60GB. Even if I did spilt it half and half, i would still be under the recommended amount of storage for the system partition.
Well Here are 2 things I found out about Windows 8 that I think will possibly hurt it
1. There is going to be NO start button and MS is attempting to patch start button hacks and prevent start alternatives to run
2. MS is dropping Aero support. Aero will remain through beta but will be dropped once the full version is released. I hate this because I really like how Aero looks as it is very pleasing to look at. The new interface will remove the translucent effect, drop shadows, window gradient and curves due to it's "visually distracting" and replace it with a dull, flat, and boxy and looks very boring. The new interface will look something like this

The start button is pretty much still there, it just isn't visible and goes in to the new start menu not the old one.
Wait, they are getting rid of aero completely? That sucks, I don't mind the lack of rounded corners (actually I kinda prefer it without them), but I love the transparency on some of the window elements.

What do you mean?
I'm just saying that I've already got my mind set to google stuff. When I need to look up something, its more or less an automatic action.
I'm so confused by your statement. Can you elaborate?
I don't like how they handle some settings in the metro interface.

Seems forced.

You're confused because I can't read apparently. My mistake :(

1. There is a start button (transparent, but still clicking in the corner works) and they're not attempting to prevent alternatives from being used. That was a bunch of bullshit in the media.
2. You can customize it, to what degree hasn't been shown, and then there's always custom themes.
