It's very clean but very dull. I wish they would have made it look like Office 2013.
Oh Paul, you silly silly goose. Here's a screenshot of the final Windows 8 desktop UI.
Windows Installer icon still from Windows 98 :rolleye:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/1/3188541/windows-8-rtm-development-complete And it's finished! The final build is 9200.16384.win8_rtm.120725-1247. Now we just wait for it to get leaked!
like I said before, you'll need a key if it does.
The window borders look massive without transparency, hopefully there will be a way to enable it, or even use custom themes.
like I said before, you'll need a key if it does.
You can still use the grace period.
The glow on the titlebar text was also removed. If you make the window color black, you actually can't read the titlebar text. Or if it's grey. [editline]1st August 2012[/editline]
The window borders look massive without transparency, hopefully there will be a way to enable it, or even use custom themes.
I'm hoping Panda will figure out a way to enable that, and to re-add the titlebar white glow.
The window borders look massive without transparency, hopefully there will be a way to enable it, or even use custom themes.
You can change the width in the registry: HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\PaddedBorderWidth
Transparency is one of the things I love the most in Windows 7. When I saw it for the first time back in 2009, and more importantly, could play around with it, I was surprised how beautiful Windows can be.
You can change the width in the registry: HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\PaddedBorderWidth
Does this require a restart? Doesn't seem to be having much affect for me in Windows 7? [editline]1st August 2012[/editline] Also in Windows 8, if a fullscreen/DirectX program crashes, does it actually give focus to the "blah has stopped working" box, or is it still hidden?

You can also change the border width in the advanced window color and appearance dialogue (Personalize -> Window color -> Advanced appearance settings). Then just select border padding from the item drop down menu.
Drat. I was going to install Windows 8 release preview on my new 1TB harddisk (that I found in our old NAS after cleaning up, which was rather nice), I might as well just wait, either to a leaked version or October 26th, haven't decided yet.

The only thing I really liked out of win 8 was the new aero layout, typical it gets removed / changed
there's a lot of icons they could of changed, I'm sure someone will release a metro+ pack or something
Has anybody found out how to make the lock screen take up more than one monitor?
there's a lot of icons they could of changed, I'm sure someone will release a metro+ pack or something
They seemed to stick to changing Explorer elements only for icons. I guess it would have been too much work to do the rest - I'm sure creating the hundreds (possibly more?) of icons for everything would have had them miss the release date.

Um... Wasn't one of the goals with the new desktop to have the aero environment automatically decide its color based on wallpaper? Why is it flat and non-transparent now? That destroys the effect.
Windows 8 Enterprise and Pro released on Corpnet.
I like it flat but I don't like the fact that they removed the transparency.
Not sure, I've been in 7 for the last few months.
WHAT?? Heretic!

Hello everyone, I was just thinking... Is it really worth it to upgrade to Windows 8? I tried an early beta version of it and well, it took some time getting used to, but after some time I still switched back to 7 (because of driver issues mostly, I'm using my laptop and it has an HD 4250). Hopefully the final release will be pretty good compared to the beta I tried. I just need your opinions guys, thanks.
Well, Google have released their chrome metro app on the main channel. I've just gotten the update. And there is no way to disable it, I have to pin chrome to my taskbar just to get it to start in a normal window. And there is nothing in about:flags to disable the crappy metro side of chrome. Also, you can't sideload extensions anymore. [editline]2nd August 2012[/editline] Wait a second, I thought you couldn't sideload metro apps. How the hell did Google get access to the metro UI from a win32 program?
you can sideload extensions, you just have to install them by dragging them in the extensions window. [editline]2nd August 2012[/editline] There will be a small tutorial explaining charms and shit in RTM: http://darrenwbaker.com/2012/08/02/windows-8-enterprise-rtm-installed-the-photos/ [thumb]http://darrenwbaker.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/wp_0002772.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://darrenwbaker.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/wp_0002792.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://darrenwbaker.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/wp_0002822.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://darrenwbaker.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/wp_0002862.jpg[/thumb]
oh god what, my Google Chrome transformed itself into a metro app [editline]2nd August 2012[/editline] nvm late
like I said before, you'll need a key if it does.
As if that has ever stopped anyone. Can't wait for the RTM too, although this might be the first edition of Windows I want to theme.
there's seriously no transparency support? I thought it looked nice and clean tbh
The taskbar is transparent, but yea they removed the transparency and blur. It's funny because the blur reduced the visual noise to help separate windows from each other and the wallpaper. I really hope someone figures out a way to re-enable it.
Looks like I'm staying RP until someone manages to theme it :x
