So I'm guessing this means windows server is going to have metro too? Wow.
Yup, I've already used the release preview of Windows Server 2012 on Windows Azure and can confirm that it has "Windows 8 Start Screen".
In Server though there's a group policy to go straight to the desktop on logon at least.
Is their group policy to stop people dicking around with icon position on the start screen? I imagine that would be a must for a college or school.
Not that I've seen.
what else did you expect?
I expected a professional Windows 8, tailored towards IT professionals. But Windows 8 CLEARLY is NOT it.
I expected a professional Windows 8, tailored towards IT professionals. But Windows 8 CLEARLY is NOT it.
Who fucking cares honestly.
I expected a professional Windows 8, tailored towards IT professionals. But Windows 8 CLEARLY is NOT it.
dude it's a fucking operating system there's no reason to get so bent out of shape
You know how on previous versions of windows the start menu has always been a directory? Can you still make it read only (does it still exist with the new menu there?)
It still uses the same directory as before so I imagine you could make it read-only again if you wanted to. I see no reason why it wouldn't work. However I do believe that Metro apps register on the Start screen rather than just a shortcut in the start menu folder. So it'd only work with desktop apps.
did i miss something [editline]5th August 2012[/editline] $15 for a win8 upgrade? What a steal
you need to have purchased a latpop/prebuilt pc pretty recently for it
fuck, bought my PC in 2010 guess I don't qualify :(
Nope, but you do qualify for the $40 upgrade
$40 is still good for a windows upgrade, considering you normally have to pay $300
$40 is still good for a windows upgrade, considering you normally have to pay $300
Not for an upgrade. 7 Ultimate was only $220 when it came out, $165 now.
Not for an upgrade. 7 Ultimate was only $220 when it came out, $165 now.
And if you qualify for certain student bonuses, only $90.
And if your school (college) has MSDNAA, $0.

Still. It would be cool if you could choose a picture as a tile.
The tiles for the non-metro of i mean "new user interface" icons look much better now. Still. If the start screen uses the directory like Panda said it seems to, then surely that should be possible for shortcuts pinned to it.

They've always been so cold and strict in their language before, and this massive about face to be all personal and warm and fuzzy just seems so weird to me. [editline]5th August 2012[/editline] I mean if someone acted like that in real life, you'd think they were up to something

I don't know where you are getting that from. Some of the UI tooltips since Vista have been a lot less "beep boop users" and more "yeah, this crashed, want us to check it out?". Though not everything has changed to more user friendly language yet. Their advertising has also been pretty laid back since Vista.

Vista and 7 seemed like it was all about the user using Windows, 8 looks to me that it's about the user using a computer. Also not cold and strict in consumer release language? Have you seen any of Microsoft's product names? Even now with the dropping of Metro and calling it "Windows 8-Style UI", unless it isn't actually running on Windows 8, but instead say Windows Phone 8, at which point it becomes "New User Interface", even though Microsoft loves to tell us that WP8 and W8 are the same platform underneath yadda yadda yadda [editline]5th August 2012[/editline] I mean I can't wait to use Office 2013 Home and Student Edition Windows 8 Style-UI on my Windows RT tablet

If we are lucky, we will get Metro back, of not, well, we have that shit. But I kinda see what you mean about Windows 8 focusing more on helping the user use their computer, rather than using Windows. It's still not been "beep boop users" since Vista at the least. They toned down the technical language a bit with every release since it seems.

It's like once a product is almost done they call up the most eccentric artists they can find and tell them to draw abstract art.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/B3p6M.jpg[/t] Waaah why no dark/light gray option I don't want colors Hopefully these schemes aren't hardcoded and I'll be able to change that later
I don't know to what extent everyone here wants to customize 8, but I was up for a few hours last night speaking with a friend talking about Windows 8 modifications. He ended up making this: http://athenera.deviantart.com/art/Windows-8-RTM-Vista-theme-3-319108903 Which means Shell32 can now be modified again. Previously if you modified it in 8 you'd get a BSOD / Forced System Restore. As a test he moved the details pane to the bottom and colored the control panel sidebar.
