I've noticed that on the college macs, waiting for UEFI to unfreeze takes longer than my old motherboard with BIOS.
Actually my laptops BIOS is fast as fuck - that's one thing I'll thank Sony for. It's like ~3 seconds max.
I'm thinking of getting Windows 8 over win7 aslong if I can startup directly to the desktop.
It really doesn't make a difference, windows now boots so quickly you can still get to the desktop faster than windows 7 can even after checking your live tiles for new info.
See, that's one thing I like about Metro. Live tiles will be so very useful once there are more apps that utilize them. I'd like to see a task manager live tile that displays resources used, a diagnostics live tile that displays component temperatures, that sort of thing. It would make it so much easier to find out what my computer is doing, rather than having to launch fifty billion applications and check them all one-by-one.
Hey Panda, aside from the UI changes, is there anything else notable that changed from the RC to the RTM?

Not that I'm aware of.
Will win8 include a new version of directx libraries?
Also there is that UEFI thing. There will be less pirated win8 systems, but as always someone will crack it sooner or later.

11.1, not really major to be honest.
If you mean secure boot it doesn't affect x86 users which the majority are.
oooh the new task manager is pretty sexy as fuck
I don't know why people hate the new start screen. It's two dimensional like the desktop instead of a one-dimensional list, and it's easier to get to than the desktop when I have a bunch of windows open.
(I also like being able to finally have my desktop completely free of icons. When I was using 7, I didn't want to fill up my taskbar with pinned shortcuts, and I found the start menu a lot slower to use, so I never liked getting rid of desktop icons.)
This thing runs like a charm on my sis' shitbox that could barely handle XP and even recognized some obscure drivers instantly. Love Win8, looking forward to the official release.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/10/11/reflecting-on-your-comments-on-the-start-screen.aspx
Read that. It explains the math behind designing the new start screen (tl;dr: you find things faster).
They're just telling me to change my way of thinking and pointing to hidden research. By an means it's more frustrating, as soon as you ask them nicely to change the thing back they explain why they're not going to, it's hopeless and it makes me more mad than ever. They don't seem to grasp that people like me don't want a massive screen in our faces when we click the space where the start button used to be. I mean you could lock the desktop to be a picture of a dog and create research stating how it relaxes people and how it should stay, but that doesn't mean people will responf.
I understand they want to compete with apple's innovation, but if people hate something and aren't willing to change it's not going to be cost effective no matter how much you'd like believe it is. People like me really don't care about the math behind it, it's a product, I don't have to buy therefore I won't. It's great in theory but not in practice.
I'd rather learn C# and make my own windows UI and rip out the Metro. I don't want to have use tweak UI and third part systems to make it work.
So to make you guys understand how much I hate the Metro I'll say this; I'd rather put a gun to my head than use it as retarded as that sound. It's too much and I don't think you guys understand that.
Because having the equivalent of a fully expanded start menu is supremely ugly and confusing.
No it isn't. With Metro I have to drag the screen over to next one about 30 times to get to anything.
[editline]9th August 2012[/editline]
The Start Screen is not a touch UI. Large icons and touch screens are mutually exclusive things, it doesn't mean a touch screen needs big buttons, and big buttons don't mean it was designed for touch screens. It was designed to be easier to navigate than any iteration of the Start system yet. And it damn well looks like they pulled it off. No more trawling through folders to find something, no more precise movements to click a menu option (Start Menu items are fucking tiny, what? 16px tall?). Having the menu take up the entire screen allows it to display more, and it does scale based on resolution, you see more icons on larger resolutions, less on smaller.
The Start Screen is a very usable interface, I can tell this without even touching the damn thing just because it looks more approachable. You can sort the items in it if you desire, having things you use the most show up on the first "page", saving you having to scroll. You can group items as well if you need groups of programs easily accessible. It adds a lot of new features, and improves on the existing search functionality a ton based on MSDN blog entries. You lose no functionality at all using it, you gain functionality and all you sacrifice for that? A menu being in a compact form factor. A menu you won't even look at half the time, let alone use most of the time.
Oh, and please, do tell me where Vista "went", it was a pretty fine operating system for its time, not perfect, but not as awful as people make it out to be. And it only got better as time went on. Wait, don't tell me, you believe in the "alternating quality of Windows" shit too as well right?
Didn't you see the 'Surface' keynotes? It's supposed to be designed for touch screens in the future just as the mouse was. No more precise movements to click a menu option? I also didn't realise some people had trouble clicking on menus in Windows 7.
I don't believe in the alternating alternating windows theory, but it's generally agreed that Vista and Me were two of the worst.
This is how Microsoft deal with people who hate the Metro UI:

Honestly RoboChimp, it's no use arguing with you. I can't remember whether you've actually tried out Windows 8 yourself or not, but do it if you haven't.

I'm not trying to debate a point, I'm looking for a way to convince Microsoft to put an option in Windows 8 for the old Start menu. It's a cry for help more than a argument. I have tried to use this stupid Metro UI and not only do I have no use for it, I don't want use it on my desktop or laptop PCs. I just want one person on this forum to understand my point of view rather than try to change me my mind. I'm sorry if don't agree, you don't have to agree with me, but this isn't something I can just ignore like a bad program (would if I could). It's going to catch up with me in a few years.
How can I convince Microsoft to bring back the start menu?
Other than the Metro, the OS is ok. Not much of a reason to upgrade, but it's ok.
Why am I getting rated dumb for hating the Metro? Why? What the hell?
Like your opinion matters to microsoft.
Besides, its reached RTM, there is no going back now. And its not as if there wasn't a large amount of people bitching on their blog about the changes, it made no difference.
In that case I can't say anything else but HELP!!! I seriously don't know what to do or how to fix this. I'm losing my mind.
Still, why aren't you people helping me? You're just making it worse.
Its called being a realist.
Ok whatever. I understand you're accepting it, but can't you suggest anything at all that I can do?
Ok whatever. I understand you're accepting it, but can't you suggest anything at all that I can do?
Use a custom explorer.exe like Panda X did?
Skip the start screen. Have a part of the start menu.

Here's the URL:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1091045-windows-7-explorer-for-windows-8/page__st__120
And I've understood your complaining about the new start screen, I was a bit quirky about it when I saw it as well. I tried it out without a concluded opinion on it, and I think that's part of why I actually like the change. I've gone from "Why would they change the start menu in Windows 8?" to "Why wouldn't they?".
On a different note, I get why Gabe Newell wasn't happy for the Windows app store now: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1203888
If that's his reason, I think Gabe Newell can stuff it, no matter how much I admire him.

Thanks. I still think could design a better UI, but I'm not going the effort of making a flash animation. But is there no transparent glass theme on the latest release?
I wish I could buy this right now, I fucking forgot to make a backup of Windows 7 Before installing this, I hate myself. But anyway, I love Windows 8, its more effecient, you find things faster and the whole OS starts incredibly fast.
I got that activate Windows 8 but it disappeared when I restarted, I really wanna use this but I wonder if I would have to go back to W7 anyway.
[editline]9th August 2012[/editline]
I for one don't miss W7 UI at all, when you got used to W8 UI it's simply more effecient.
[editline]9th August 2012[/editline]
Btw, are there some kind of Aero in W8? All I'm getting is the non-transparent coloured bars.

Aww sweet we're saved, you guys! Super awesome pro is gonna save us by rewriting windows in C#!
He's such a pro we're just too blind to see how right he is!
Why do people hate Metro so much? it's slick and efficient!
[editline]9th August 2012[/editline]
I just noticed that I wrote efficient wrong this whole time.
EFFICIENT, not effecient.

I don't think so. And I don't believe one minute that you'd be able to make a better UI either, sorry.

Stop being so stubborn and listen to what people are telling you.
It takes a special kind of jerk to think he's the only person who's right and everyone else is wrong.
That was aimed at everything you've said, not just that particular post.

I'd like to see your take on it
[editline]9th August 2012[/editline]
Also how buggy is build 8400 compared to the RTM build? I just noticed that audio quality is fucking awful on Windows 8 compared to OS X on my Macbook. I don't know anything about sound, but it sounds like it isn't using the bass speaker bit on my laptop

It's possible. The Windows sound drivers aren't great... But sound's never been Windows' thing anyway. It's one of the reasons people use Macs for audio work, because their OS is written for that kind of thing.

What?
Btw, are there some kind of Aero in W8? All I'm getting is the non-transparent coloured bars.
No, they're killing Aero. That's the only thing I really don't like about Win8. Although if PandaX sees this, he might have some info about re-enabling it through DLL hacks.

Thanks for misinterpreting, what I meant was; I'm going to save myself by learning C# and even it takes 10 years to learn I'll dig myself out this hole at least I'm trying to come up with a solution to the problem I'm having.
I'm not going to create a UI, but I can simulate in Flash to demonstrate a better idea.
Why are you having a go at me, I didn't insult you.

Aha, gonna install W7 again, since there is no way to activate W8, I can't stand the watermark. Will buy this asap :D.
Is this a "cold" boot or are you using hybrid booting? My laptop with a 5400RPM HDD is about as fast.
Hybrid boot never works for me. Only works when I force it from the command line
