So let's say I'm ready to purchase an upgrade copy the moment it becomes available on October 26th.
What would be the best route to go if I wanted to get W8 on my desktop before the official release? And would I later on then have to go back to W7 and upgrade from that, or can I upgrade from e.g. the RP?
I know some of these have been answered in the thread before (at least partially), but just making sure.
Hey guys, don't know if this is late or not, but if you're deciding to download the MSDN version to switch from your WZR version of Windows 8, don't bother save your bandwidth. If we compare their SHA1 hashes they are completely different, but apparently the only difference is just 32 bytes of data from the install.wim file (The only difference is the digital signature at the beginning) but anyway, this doesn't make a difference whatsoever for users like us. You can stick to the normal WZR version but if you want an image exactly like the MSDN version, simply find the xdelta patches for your windows version (Professional, Enterprise, 32bit, 64bit) you can find them on Google, and download xdelta from their google page. Patch it up and you're ready to go, if we compare their SHA1 hashes now they are exactly the same. You can check the MSDN SHA1 hashes via Google, or go on MyDigitalLife or something.
Patching up the WZR release is fairly simple, just put the xdelta patch, the xdelta executable and your WZR iso in one folder, shift click and open a command window there. Simply put in the following:
(rename your xdelta executable to xdelta3.exe, your xdelta patch to xdeltapatch.xdelta and your iso to oldwzt.iso)
xdelta3.exe -d -s oldwzt.iso deltapatch.xdelta windows8msdn.iso
At the end of the day this is just a 32 byte hex edit, either patch it up with xdelta or change it yourself (Google is your friend)
Hope that I helped! Enjoy Windows 8 and all it's glory.
where else can I download the win8 preview, this ISO keeps getting corrupted and its annoying the shit out of me, last time I found a way that downloaded it right to your pc and it wasnt some BS, thing is i didnt realize i had to update my drivers too so i just went back to win 7 and now I cant remember where I got it.

i dont know, seems this doesnt work anymore as there only offering the ISO way, and 4x the ISO has been corrupted on me
Is there any way to "reinstall" the store? Nothing happens when I'm trying to open it.

So does this mean if I installed using the stock WZR image, I wont be able to activate windows with a legit retail/MSDN key?
edit: nevermind, my reading sucks
I was also disappointed that we still have the vista-era pre-installation installer for the RTM. Really, Microsoft?
I was also disappointed that we still have the vista-era pre-installation installer for the RTM. Really, Microsoft?
im disappointed that we still have win95 Icons along with the metro ones.
So, I used the repair disk to fix my MBR
It uses the vista launcher for some reason now...
Still runs fine though, so I'm not complaining.
I'm really enjoying using Windows 8 so far, didn't think I'd get on with it at all but the speed and efficiency at which it does everything (especially with a shiny new SSD) is giving me a massive erection. I'm mainly using Desktop, but Metro is coming in useful (need some more time to see HOW useful it's going to be though).
Also, is there any information on when the Server 2012 RTM is going to go up on MSDN? I seem to recall it was supposed to go up at the same time as 8 but the only thing up right now is either Essentials Beta or the RC
It fucking pisses me off when I read that "Windows 8 Preview" thread. So much fake hate.
Mainly because all their points are so lame and the fact that when you get used to W8 it's so much better in every aspect.
I shouldn't have to get used to an OS, especially when every previous version of it made in the last ten years was easy to use and straight forward, going from XP to Vista and Vista to 7 was smooth, I didn't have to relearn the fucking OS.
This tablet crap doesn't work with desktops, period, if they made the metro shit optional I'd gladly buy twenty copies of W8.
Well I'm sure you had to learn how to use the old design method too, right?
is learning how to click a few things really that hard

Yes it does, it's so much more efficient. And if we ignore the UI, the whole OS is amazingly much faster, it's no joke that it starts in 10 seconds for me on a SSD, W7 starts in 30.
Everything is more fluid, more efficient, you have a better workflow.
Yes, I did, and thanks to it being straight forward and easy I didn't have to look up how to do anything, why do I have to go through a bunch of fucking menus to restart my computer?
Having to click through a few things? Um have you ever used Windows before? I can do anything Metro can do with a single click on W7, instead of having to dig through menus and navigate a shitty menu designed for tablets, this is a step backwards.
How about you try and use Windows 8 legit instead of jumping on the bandwagon and hating because you watched it on youtube.
I can agree with a lot of people on Windows 8 being bad, I don't like it either, and I'm certainly not buying, just what I find annoying is that people bitching about things that aren't necessarily true.

Just because the start menu retains its previous functionality isn't entirely an excuse to be ok with it, because it's still a shit implementation of it. Regardless of its functionality. It isn't always consistent with WP7 either. For example in WP7 you can use a context menu [t]http://cdn.phonenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/wp7uninstall1.jpg[/t] though in 8 you get the app bar at the bottom to do tasks.
There are plenty of reasons to not like 8. It's over-all feel of half-assedness is the primary reason I don't like it. I can ignore the start menu, I don't even use the one in 7 to be honest, but the inconsistencies and the general feeling like the phrase "that'll do" and "good enough" were used throughout the development just make it not worth it.
Not to mention if you chose not to use the start screen and go taskbar/desktop/3rd party app only, then there's hardly any point in getting 8. The few features the desktop has can be mimicked with 3rd party software with maybe the exception of the ribbon in explorer, though I think we all can live without it.
Speaking of the ribbon I feel like I should point out the complete lack of sense in it. The idea of the Ribbon interface in general is to bring commands up front so people won't have to go looking for them all the time, which makes sense in and of itself, however that completely conflicts with the idea that things like the start button, charms bar, app switcher, show desktop button, etc should be hidden away in the corner away from view. You should go one way or another, show everything upfront in a non-cluttered and noninvasive way, or hide everything and let the user guess all day long.
In the end, I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good either.
I have tried it, and it was a miserable experience, being somewhat faster doesn't justify ruining the UI.
It's not "somewhat" faster, it's insanely much faster. The UI isn't ruined at all. The only thing thats changed is the startmenu, the UI for everything else looks like W7 with some metro stuff.
If you just give the startmenu a chance and customize it to your liking it's more efficient. And you don't have to click extra things. You just have to customize it a bit to your personal liking.

When I tried Windows 8 and then went back to Windows 7, I missed Windows 8 because of the fact it's faster and faster in a working environment. Windows 7 feels sluggish and you have to click more. Windows 8 feels more efficient like I've said lots of times already.

I can live with the metro interface, but one thing really bothers me.
Why did they disable transparency on the window borders?
Thats fucking dumb, and it looks like shit.

This I agree with however.
I like the metro, because its simplicity shows in apperance and elegant code.
And I've never understanded people when Vista came out. It was new, it was nice, it was better than xp, but a lot of average users have complained about it like it was a sluggish disaster, when in reality they just needed to upgrade their pc. Then 7 came out and everyone was like "omg best os" when it's the vista with more compact taskbar and nothing more.
Most of people are blind whiners.

Damn it :v:
Is there a way to enter the exact RGB value for window border color?
Soooooooo... still no way to activate Win8 Pro?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
ColorizationColor (DWORD) = AARRGGBB
Since there's no blur or transparency in 8 alpha should be FF to properly match, otherwise it'll blend with the black background layer creating a darker color.

Buy it when it comes out. Use the enterprise 90 day trial in the meantime. Seriously, it's going to be like $40.

Do you know if there's a way to set the text color? I want dark window borders but that kills the visibility on the black text (Which is fucking stupid and I will NEVER understand why they took the glow out. Fuck consistency, I want usability.)
If you wanted a quick way to restart the computer, couldn't you just make a shortcut to it and stick it on the "start menu"? If you want to shut down your computer, there's the hardware power button that works just fine. On a laptop, there's almost always an FN keyboard shortcut to sleep (Or hibernate if you edited the default).
or can I upgrade from e.g. the RP?
Yes, you are allowed to upgrade from the RP. But it will do a full re-install of your OS (old files will be stored in Windows.old)

It's controlled via the msstyles, if you want I could make an edit for you, what color do you want the text?
-snip-
I miss the days of XP where you just plugged in a Corporate serial, and boom... No more activation bullshit, no KMS bullshit, activated for life. Even with hardware swaps.
So, what are the methods available currently to get a more traditional start menu?
