Nobody gave me the link, could you provide it? I wonder how long I can do this before the I.T guys get fishy
I'm guessing the release preview is free, right?
Yes, links in the OP. But wheres the RTM pro?
Considering installing it on my old pc.
Yes, links in the OP. But wheres the RTM pro?
Legally, only in the hands of MSDN/technet subscribers.
Fuck, while we're on the subject of MSDN subscriptions, is it possible to extend that subscription to other accounts for free?
Yes, links in the OP. But wheres the RTM pro?
I guess on the torrent sites?
Kind of wanting the legal pathway of things just in case I can't activate it.
So has anyone any experience with touch-screen monitors? Are they responsive enough and are they worth it?
My opinion is that it's pretty cool to put it on a wall since I have an old computer that isn't being used, but I've heard your hands could get tired after a long use on a big touch monitor that is in a vertical position.
Running the evaluation copy, I had higher expectations than I should have but it isn't too bad after getting used to it. The complete separation of desktop and metro is a little aggravating since metro apps don't like to work properly while I'm on the desktop.
Any recommendations of things to download to organize my applications better? I don't want to pile everything in my start screen but I don't want to put it in a folder and dig through it like the old start menu.
Also, some useful applications should be linked in the OP, a hundred pages of I don't even know is a little hard to search through.
Fences work well for cleaning up your desktop, with your start menu - categorize shit correctly "education: microsoft office, skydrive" "personal: chrome. spotify, music+videos" "games: Steam, origin" etc..

Yeah I fixed it after updating my Nvidia drivers from 302.** to 304.**.
I'll have to try out my intuos and see how it works with it soon. It doesn't have touch or anything, only pen, but I'm interested to see how well they work together.
I haven't tried it with my intuos (because it's at a different workstation entirely) but I assume it's practically the same
It works really well if you set up one of the pen buttons to be right click and the other to be scroll, you can use gestures or the tablet buttons for the modifier buttons like I did, it works surprisingly well with the Touch KB.
I found this useful: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-8-tip-edit-power-user-tasks-menu-142525
You can also bring up this menu with Windows-X.

I only wish that it had an entry for "My Computer" (or a way to make Windows Explorer start in My Computer instead of Libraries)
I only wish that it had an entry for "My Computer" (or a way to make Windows Explorer start in My Computer instead of Libraries)
In Windows 7, you could do this with the the Windows Explorer pinned icon by right-clicking it, right-clicking "windows explorer" in the jumplist, clicking properties, and adding "shell:mycomputerfolder" after explorer.exe in the target field. I quickly did this to every computer I used after finding out about it.

The File Explorer entry seems to do that.
I should also read the whole article first... It doesn't seem to be possible to add new shortcuts to the list, for some reason. This looks like it might work: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5607-power-user-tasks-menu-win-x-edit-windows-8-a.html
EDIT: It works! Though in my example of adding an entry for network connections, I had to use "%windir%\system32\control.exe ncpa.cpl" instead of just "ncpa.cpl".
Oh weird. It does launch "My Computer" for me now. :tinfoil:

There's also %windir%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Also to anyone who would like to know more of these shell folders:

I recently upgraded and I find the UI nice. I haven't cleaned it up yet to my standards, but it's running on my laptop really nicely. It saves a tad bit of battery juice. I get about 2:00 unplugged now as opposed to about 1:20 on a good day with Windows 7.
Also, perhaps it's a minor, simple feature, but I really like the fact that Windows now can mount ISO's and open .RAR's without the need of programs like WinRAR or an ISO program. It just saves some clutter in my program files and virtually eliminates the need for programs like that to be on my computer, at least for what I use them for.
I hope to see the Windows application store expand, and I hope there's some good content from third-party developers. I'd really like to see 8 gain some popularity and success so I can (one day) have a tablet that's entirely compatible with my other PC's at home.
I guess I just don't see why it's so heavily criticized after having used it for a few days now.

All you need to know is the Windows + E shortcut. Opens explorer on my computer.
There is a third party program to put the old start menu back in Windows 8, along with the start button. Where is the tweak to restore the aero glass theme(just asking for a link)?

The Aero glass files got removed from the OS. I don't think there is a way to readd them.

I know I'm asking for a way to bring it back. I don't like the plain theme.

They did everything possible to prevent people from reenabling aero, and the old shell for the start menu.

-snip- I didn't get the sarcasm at first.
Asus Xonar DX CMP doesn't work in Windows 8. Drivers still gives audio but CMP doesn't load which sucks big time. Have to listen in stereo but I want fake 7.1.
Downloading the Evaluation Copy now. After it expires I'll need to purchase Windows 8 for full price, since I'm on a new build.
Or can I somehow use my old laptop that's on Vista to get Win8 cheap?
They've got a good start with the "Aero Basic" theme.

If they did a little polishing on that (Including metro back/forward buttons, etc) I think it would look pretty good.
But it's clear based on what they've done so far that that isn't going to happen. I don't get the UI team at Microsoft. I get that a product as massive as Windows takes a lot of work to be consistent, but at the same time I don't see what would be hard about re-skinning aero to metro.
holy fuck, dat theme, so sexy :O
edit:
if i download windows 8 now, do i need to reinstall when the final version comes out?
