I actually think this one looks pretty nice
Yeah, best looking one. Could use a bit touching up.
I like that he used the metro style, he just needs to make it "metro-er."
Also replace that old start button with the one in the developer preview I think it was... just the plain square with the windows logo. .
Can't wait for Server 2012 on the 3rd, from fiddling with the RP on the server I'm planning on deploying to it's awesome (storage spaces is basically the killer feature for me). All they need to do is hurry up and release a version of RSAT that works with 8RTM without having to hack the 8RP installer to work and I'll be moist
Installed Windows 8 in my netbook despite being a linux fanboy, and it's kinda nice, the only thing that bothred me a bit was that i had to edit the registry to make windows select a bigger resolution so it can use metro apps, but it's still somewhat good, but not for netbooks. The first thing i downloaded (Fruit Ninja), first thing broken. Well, it is a preview version, so I guess that'll be fixed.

Metro Fruit Ninja is insane fun with a graphics tablet c:
Start8 can't customise the start menu, as in what options you can have down the side. What a pain, it was looking promising!
It also doesn't show the orb correctly if you have the taskbar in small icon mode.
Well, minimum resolution is there to ensure that all apps will work - if you have a resolution smaller than that, it's clear that shit's gonna break.
Hmm, having a bit of a display issue in Start8 with PuTTY's quick menu.

Is it only with PuTTY?
Is it only with PuTTY?
Yep.
Anyone know of a harddisk health checking type program that works with windows 8?
chkdisk
chkdisk
Doesn't that only checks the windows filesystem for errors?
Oh wait you want to check the physical health? There are many tools to read the SMART status, or do you want to run tests? (HD Tach)
What happens when the release preview ends? Does it just disable itself?
Anyone know of a harddisk health checking type program that works with windows 8?
Crystal Disk Info?
I'm a bit out of date. Is that stupid 'secure boot' idea dead yet?
I'm a bit out of date. Is that stupid 'secure boot' idea dead yet?
No. Its still here, and won't go away.
(Atleast for prebuilt computers)

So if I buy a laptop I'm fucked?
With enough people hating the idea I'm sure Microsoft will get rid of it.
I'm pretty sure secure boot only affects ARM devices, and some Linux distros worked out something with Microsoft anyways?

AFAIK you can disable secure boot in bios
But I heard, that you wouldn't be able to boot Windows8 if secure boot is disabled.
I think i'm gonna have to try chkdsk or something because last night it said something about hard disk errors and having to reboot to fix it, but ever since this laptop refuses to be able to shut down.
Is it just me or does task manager take waaay longer to boot up in Win8 under emergency situations?
I mean, I appreciate how pretty Win8 is and how quickly it boots up, but the UI transition lag (ex. the time it takes for metro or the corner menus to pop up), task manager lag, lack of proper drivers, compatibility issues and such may just make me switch back to 7.
no bugs here, i'm using a usb keyboard, and it works perfectly.
Is it normal for Windows Update to be horribly bugged? The Metro app crashed a few times already and if it doesn't, it takes minutes to start up. And when I finally got it to work, it's just stuck at this.

Apparently it started downloading, but after those several minutes.
[editline]30th August 2012[/editline]
And got a BSOD while installing the first update. Well, I guess I'll try again.
I think I figured out why people find W8 so hard to use. There's a bug in the USB driver stack that breaks a bunch of the usability features in W8, but people like me with PC/2 keyboards are unaffected.
If you hit Wkey and start typing, does it open a run prompt in metro?
If not, you're victim, and there are tons more bugs making windows 8 the awful OS you think it is from here.
I've been using W8 without mods since I got the RTM and I haven't had to go all the way into Metro and click around once.
If you have, something is wrong with either how you're using the OS or with your device drivers.
I've used 3 different USB keyboards with Windows 8, two with RC and one with RTM and haven't had any problems. What do you mean by run prompt? The same type of search that you get in Windows 7 when you do the same thing?

It's fine on the RTM, try updating to that or at least the RP.
Alright, I've been using this for a few hours now. I like how snappy the OS is, and the small touches such as the simplification of the windows.
But.
I don't know why the fuck they've gone with the Metro interface with the desktop PCs. I don't really have anything against Metro itself, but it just doesn't work alongside the desktop environment. The fact that you can have an internet browser open in Metro but can't interact with it through the Desktop is fucking retarded, they've made zero attempt at unifying the two environments. Replacing the start menu with Metro has got to be the worst decision Microsoft have made in the history of Windows.
I'm also concerned about just how many people are going to be purchasing Windows 8. I just don't think businesses will want to invest a penny in to installing the OS on to their computers. It will waste a massive amount of time just so that people can become familiar with the new interface, never mind the amount of tech support people will need.
I'm going to stick with it for a few more days to see if I can get more in to it, but at the minute it just feels entirely unnatural and Metro is just working as an obstacle for me right now rather than improving the experience.
Can you activate the 8 RP?
-snoop-
Can you activate the 8 RP?
Yes, the RP is free to activate, but it expires in January. If you really want RTM instead of RP, you can get the 90-day trial.
