I wonder if my local colleges offer dreamspark or msdn accounts upon enrolling in their computer classes...
It's always worth asking. Though I found my college only had MSDNAA access for the university part of it, even though it was listed as the college itself having it.
Is there anyway to get rid of all the administrative privilege stuff in Win8? I know to turn off UAC, I have. But I still get pop ups... I never got these in Win7.
Also... how can I get rid of the blue and yellow icon thing on all my desktop shortcuts?

SmartScreen?
I'm in love with Windows 8 and my tablet at the university i'm at. If I need to do some quick research I just pull up Metro IE and go to google. I can do it way faster than I can with a mouse or trackpad.
I was using it in my Calc class and the guy next to me (with a mac) was completely blown away. He said "Everything's so fast and smooth. If I had a touchscreen laptop I'd definitely switch to a PC. This is great." I felt pretty awesome.
Well, until I tried to take notes in OneNote 2013 and it locked up. But I think that's OneNote's fault.

What tablet is it?
How do you install Win8 through Dreamspark Premium? Is it an ISO or something?
Will I lose data if I try and upgrade it through Win7?
How do you install Win8 through Dreamspark Premium? Is it an ISO or something?

It is an ISO. Just burn it to a disc or use a USB drive.
And you will only lose the data you tell it to. If you want to keep everything you can, if you want to keep your documents only you can, if you don't want any of it you can do that too, though the last one will move your old Users folder into a folder called "Windows.old". So you don't lose everything even then.
Can I install and run Windows 8 off of an SD card?
Can I install and run Windows 8 off of an SD card?
If you're coming from Win7 (and maybe vista), you can spam F8 at boot (after POST but before "starting windows") and select "repair my computer", log in, open a command prompt, cd over to your SD card, and run setup.exe from the extracted ISO.
That won't overwrite Windows 7 or anything right?
can i dual boot windows 8 with windows 7?
can i dual boot windows 8 with windows 7?
Yes.
Installing windows 8 alongside Windows 7 will make 7 a boot option in the bootloader.

Or just mount the .iso and launch the installer.
Or just mount the .iso and launch the installer.
I dunno if that works or not seeing as the computer restarts and needs to be able to read the ISO still. So probably not seeing as the mounting application would be closed.

Nah it works I do it all the time when I have to reinstall Windows.
That won't overwrite Windows 7 or anything right?
No, it'll just launch the Windows 8 setup. But if the Win8 partition screen is the same as Win7's, then it won't let you shrink the Win7 partition once you're in.. you'll have to use diskpart while you're still at the command prompt to do that.
diskpart
list disk
select disk #
list partition
select partition #
shrink desired=# (in MB)
Then once you get to the partition screen in Win8 setup, select the unallocated space to install to.

Huh, good to know I guess. I still prefer to have a bootable media in case something goes tits up, but that's pretty useful to know.

Kind of the same story at school and phones.
Everyone has android and I have a lumia 800 (two have iPhones but the majority is just android).
Anyway they were surprised it was fast but a lot were like "why windows?" I don't know what's so bad about the OS, Everything is so optimized and fast I love it, and I've never used an IE where it was just so responsive and clean.
My thoughts are exactly on windows 8, I love it.

I would switch to IE in a heart beat if it had a syncing tool and proper addon support, that's the only two things holding me back from using IE.

Yeah doing that isn't completely "fresh", it just copies the install files off to somewhere, moves all your shit to a windows.old folder, and then runs the extracted installer.
How would one go about getting Windows 8 on a tablet? Do we just have to wait for RT?
How would one go about getting Windows 8 on a tablet? Do we just have to wait for RT?
If it's an Intel based tablet, just install it. RT can only be installed by OEMs in the factory - there will be no consumer purchasable version.
Thanks for the above information; I was able to register a DreamSpark Premium for like €15.
I'm afraid my Windows 7 is slowly dying after 2,5 years (which is great when compared to XP which I had to reinstall every 8 months or so). Is it a good idea to switch to Win8 in the future?

Hoping to sell it right before the Surface Pro comes out and trade to that. I don't use the laptop style of this much.

Coool!
Is it just me or did Microsoft really neglect the desktop UI on Windows 8?
They gave tablet & phone users an awesome UI, but they just made the desktop more dull and didn't even introduce a new UX/UI guideline to stop programs looking so clusterfucky.
I mean absolutely anything goes on Windows, not even Microsoft can respect their own vague UI guidelines.
What exactly am I looking at? Because it looks great.
The 'Wake up, danny!' thing reminds me of those tacky desktop notifications from the XP era, though :v:
http://dribbble.com/shots/693868-Windows-8-Day-Mode
Here you go, its just a mockup. But I'd absolutely love to implement that in Linux.

DAT UI!
[editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
I love the idea of having the windows vista sidebar return as a place for live tiles.
[editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
Have it as a hot corner though, hidden unless you need it.
God damn, that looks incredible.
I'd love if the desktop was simply merged with the start menu.
Taskbar still there, window functionality still there. the taskbar would be hidden in metro apps unless you hit the windows key.
The desktop would have the slots for metro apps you have now, and customizable tiles.

oh ok, so how do I, do I partion another section of my drive?
oh ok, so how do I, do I partion another section of my drive?
Shrink your current partition, create a new one in that space and install Win8 to that one.
I have got the enterprise trial installed and its awesome. From when I hit the power button to the Start screen showing up takes 25 seconds.
People need to start getting pissed over the state of Windows, why the hell CAN'T it look good?
I realize it has 15 years worth of ugly applications and you need some consistency. But fuck them.
Android is recovering nicely after the Holo UI was implemented, there are plenty of apps I use which follow the UI guidelines to the letter, and those guidelines have only been around for a year.
the fact that windows 8 still uses NTFS should be something worth raging even more about imo
god I wish I could use Linux instead of Windows, why game developers, why, save us Gaben
