So since the Consumer Preview, Windows 8 can sync my desktop background, theme color, and some advanced windows explorer settings.. but not my time zone?
What if you had two PCs in different timezones?
Or were activating your new PC in a different timezone?

I was just expecting them to be able to pull it from my Microsoft account since they managed to store so many other things and since they removed the time zone screen from Windows Setup. After all, how often does your time zone change?

What if you have a place you often go to with your laptop that's in another timezone?
but it is plugged in and I already tried to switch the pci slot :suicide:
I could install it fine but I have no CP. Xonar DX here.
[editline]10th September 2012[/editline]
Btw, you can install the drivers manually, you can find them in the rar, you don't have to use the setup.exe.
Well, I actually have Dreamspark premium, should I go for Windows 8 or should I stick with Windows 7?

If you would read up you would see he already tried that

Well, you change it. That's already what you do anyway. I don't see how this changes his wish at all. 99% of the time you won't be switching time zones.
I'm pretty sure he just wants it to pull the time zone info from your account when you initially set up Windows, not every time it syncs like with wallpapers and stuff. They're already making an assumption by defaulting you to Pacific, so in any case it would be better to assume that you want it to use your stored time zone rather than Pacific.
Is it really that hard to set your timezone manually?
Just click the clock on the taskbar and change settings...
The timezone is a computer-dependent, or to be more precise, a location-dependent setting.
It is not a personal setting.
And you usually only set it once, when you set up the computer (unless you travel).
Therefore, there is no point in having it synced along with your personal settings. In fact, that would be illogical.

It's not an assumption, it's the time at Microsoft's HQ in Redmond.
I still say it should get it automatically, there's a feature/function in 7 and 8 that'll retrieve your location just by internet connection, it should get it from there.

It's an assumption as long as they're just setting it to something without asking you first, like they always did in previous versions.

That's not what an assumption is. They're not assuming everyone in the world is piled up on the pacific coast, it's just a default setting.
Bro, you really want to get into a semantic argument?

I still need to figure out how to make my new W8 install recognize the software I've installed onto my separate HDD when I used my old W7 install.
Well, I actually have Dreamspark premium, should I go for Windows 8 or should I stick with Windows 7?
I would go for Windows 8, Just in case the start screen annoys you too much in the end for whatever reason, You can just use Start8 or similar programs.
One thing that's starting to irk me is the fact that the taskbar is transparent but the windows are not. Why the fuck did they think that was a good idea? It's inconsistent and stupid.

I just noticed this, I agree completely. Now to try to get my HP laptop's i5-2540m's HD3000 integrated chip and the AMD 6770m working in switchable graphics mode by experimenting with every possible combination of new and old official drivers, new and old third party drivers, switchable vs. dynamic mode, installing while running on the HD3000 vs. install while running on the 6770, and playing with INFs. This'll be fun.
Wait so Dreamspark Premium accounts already have access to the full version on 8?
Because if so I'm upgrading now.
Worked perfectly. Thanks! [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img]

How exactly did you accomplish this? I can't even get device manager to properly recognize the 7 drivers..
[editline]11th September 2012[/editline]
..Okay, got them to see them (somehow) but it just says that this device driver is not compatible with this version of Windows. Oh boy..
For people who want to install xonar sounds cards on windows 8
To get started:
1. From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon).
2. Click ‘More PC Settings’.
3. Click ‘General’.
4. Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.
5. Wait a bit.
6. Click ‘Troubleshoot’.
7. Click ‘Advanced Options’
8. Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’
9. Click Restart.
10. When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list. You can now load your modified driver. Reboot again once the driver is installed and all will be well.
Notes*
The default control panel does not work for some reason, you have install the C-Media Control Panel and you have to start it up manually to customize your settings. Also I have sound and it's working with my headphone amp and all.
Tested with Xonar DG
Thanks, I'll try it once I get home.
Wow, I am probably late but am I the only one who thought it was cool that you could just update straight to Windows 8 from the desktop? I spent hours trying to find a non-scratch-raped disc and ended up making a USB key only for it to tell me to run it from the desktop :v:.
Anyways, I updated expecting the worse but things aren't actually that bad. It brought everything over pretty easily, except the sound card drivers which I found on Creative's website for Windows 8. I am slowly getting used to Metro and I really didn't like it at first but I guess it isn't so bad once you customize it. The only thing that really annoys is me is that it makes me jump through hoops to turn off the computer. Am I missing something, or is the only way to turn off the computer Metro?

Make a new shortcut, and make it point to "shutdown -s -hybrid -f -t 0"

That's been in Windows forever.

It's definitely in the RP. Make sure you actually click the desktop first.
Also, lern 2 Ctrl + I -> Power

Stick with Windows 7 until Windows 8 is released to the public. That way you'll get all the updates and have a secure OS.
stuff
Tested it aaand it works, thanks a lot.
