The only thing that really annoys is me is that it makes me jump through hoops to turn off the computer. Am I missing something, or is the only way to turn off the computer Metro?
Well, there's the button on the front of your case or above the keyboard on a laptop.

Well, I have that bound to "hibernate" on my laptop, so it's slightly annoying when I want to actually shut down or restart.

I used the sleep button (FN+F1) for hibernation and closing the lid to sleep my laptop.

You can change it to shut down in the windows power settings. Windows 8 actually partially hibernates the system with a normal shutdown if you have fast startup enabled (it is by default), making the actual hibernate option even more unnecessary than what it was before.

Ugh, I hate that... I have closing the lid set to "nothing". Sometimes I really just want to close it for a second.

No, I like having my apps open still when I have to run to another class (and sleep isn't good enough because it can't breathe in my bag)
can someone here confirm that the Windows Gadgets are removed from the RTM Windows 8?
So there's this: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158331-aero-glass-for-windows-8-rtm/
Anyone brave enough to try it?

They are, you can get them back though.

I haven't tried it but other people say that it works.
They were bloat and it'd be too much since they already are juggling win32 desktop programs and Metro apps

I tried it a few days ago, it's way too buggy to even consider in my opinion.
From the readme:
SIGN-OUT SCREEN IS BLACK.
DO NOT OPEN/RUN Internet Explorer 10 WILL CRASH PC (BEST TO UNINSTALL IT).
NO USB STICKS WITH Aero Startup.cmd ENABLED. (MAY CRASH PC)
NO AUTO RESTART OR AUTO SHUT DOWN OR AUTO SIGN-OUT WITH Aero Startup.cmd ENABLED. (WILL NOT SIGN BACK IN INTO DESKTOP)
NO INSTALLING PROGRAMS WITH Aero Startup.cmd ENABLED. (MAY CRASH PC)
IF PERSONALIZATION/WINDOWS COLOR IS TURN-OFF RUN Aero Shutdown.cmd THEN SIGN-OUT & SIGN-IN & RUN Aero Startup.cmd.
MUST ALWAYS USE Aero Shutdown.cmd BEFORE SIGN-OUT OR SHUTTING DOWN OR RESTARTING PC.
USE Aero Startup.cmd WHEN SIGNED-IN OR RESTARTING PC TO DESKTOP.
Doesn't seem worth it in my opinion, and you have to use 7's explorer which doesn't support multi-monitors. And what's the point in converting 8 in 7 when you get just get/stick with 7. If there were a simpler solution than converting 8 into 7 I would pick it up instantly, but this is hardly worth it.
I'm installing windows 8 right nooooooooooooooow
Atm I'm using Windows 7 with all graphic enhancement turned off and in a very profound 'performance' mode.
Is there a similar feature in Win8? Can someone screenshot it?

anyone has one of those free dreamspark licenses to spare? I can't wait to get my hands on the RTM

Most college students should have access to it. I got it because of my major at RIT.
Unfortunately, you might be hard pressed to find someone who would just "give it away" but you never know.

I have dreamspark, but not 'premium'. it's mostly for CS students so FSU won't provide me an account on onthehub.com
I have Dreamspark, though you only get once Licence... Which I'm going to use.
Does anyone know how to set Chromium as the default browser to open urls? It won't save, uninstalling chrome doesn't work, and I have no idea what to do.

I'm asking here because it worked in 7 so I'm guessing it's an issue with 8.

Chromium defaulted fine for me when I first launched it and said "yes" when it asked. I later got a metro (sorry, "Windows 8 Style UI") dialog upon launching IE10 IIRC that asked what browser I wanted to use by default as well, and I picked chromium there too and haven't had any issues since.

Maybe it's because I use the mini installer. Can you please send me a link to where you download chromium from?

I wrote a batch file that tracks my current build, and can delete it, download the latest build zip, and extract it in its place when I have an old version, and a launcher shortcut that tells chrome.exe to use a local path for the userdata, so it's a fully portable install.
It requires 7za.exe (the commandline version of 7-zip) and wget.exe (wget for windows), each around 300KB, to both be in the same directory as the batch file, and those are at:
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget
@echo off
set b=chrome-win32
set c=--output-document
wget http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/Win/LAST_CHANGE %c%=L
set /p l=<L
if exist C (set /p u=<C) else (set u=000000)
echo %u%/%l%
if not %u%==%l% (goto :u)
goto :p
:u
choice /m "Update"
if errorlevel 2 (goto :p)
wget http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/Win/%l%/%b%.zip %c%=%b%.zip
rd /s /q %b%
7za x %b%.zip
echo %l%>C
:p
if exist %b%\chrome.exe (choice /m "Launch") else (exit)
if not errorlevel 2 start %b%\chrome.exe
I actually haven't tested it in Windows 8 yet but I'd be surprised if it broke.
And the launcher shortcut:
start chrome-win32\chrome.exe --user-data-dir=..\userdata
so what exactly is synced with the Microsoft account? Like anything useful like your folder option settings?
also, is there any way to not need a password/pin for your PC if you are using it? I mean this is one of those things where MS didn't think about traditional desktop PC users whose PC is at there home
Is there a way to disable the transparency on the taskbar? I think it looks kinda out of place when everything else has a solid color.

Reminds me of Vista, how everything was Aero except that horrid black taskbar.
I don't wanna sound like one of those 1 windows good - next bad - cycle guys, but I bet the next windows will have the taskbar opaque.

the desktop UI was definitely not thought out as much as the metro environment
2 things that NEED to disappear from windows on next versions:
-the leftover aero icons
-chromes in windows, I'd rather have windows like in OSX with just the top bar and no chrome all around the window.
-the leftover aero icons
I think they should focus on the leftover Windows 95 icons first.
I think they should focus on the leftover Windows 95 icons first.
and Vista gradients, why are they still in the Windows file? Just imagine if they got rid of all the unused (and unneeded) crap from previous Windows versions? The total size of Windows installs would go down like at least a gig
They should just rewrite the damn OS; it's been like 20 years
because if they got rid of it, people would whine about how their 20 year old app isn't working
especially here on facepunch
I like to follow the progress on ReactOS; it's a complete black-box rewrite of Windows NT/2000. Unfortunately it still has very bad application compatibility.

Well they could try to follow the same API, but I guess some applications actually depend on undocumented bugs and features in the API implementation.
