I just think they need to work on the bloat as a whole.
I took it upon myself to get rid of most of the stuff I never needed a long time ago :v: (which included nearly all graphical features)
they should at least completely separate the kernel from the GUI like Linux
I don't think they need to rewrite the operating system as a whole, I think they need to re-do explorer and the backend behind it (themes, icons, etc). They've just built on top of it since Windows 95 and it's become a mess.
I mean, Windows 8 is incredibly fast. It's just inconsistent as fuck on the desktop side of things. They need to either completely re-do it or keep the essentials and re-build everything around that.
I'm working on a tidier Windows design in HTML & JS.
I thought the more compact windows phone style start screen would stop some people moaning about their entire desktop being obscured.
I'll shove it onto my public web server once I get explorer & the start screen actually doing something.

That start menu. Take all of my money
Microsoft should have made it so you can set the start menu to open like this at any side of the screen sort of like the start menu
I'd love to be able to have my start menu open at the left of my screen and have my taskbar at the right

Don't make the start button move, one of the reasons it's in the corner is because it makes it a "mile wide" and a "mile high", so you don't have to precisely press it, you can just whack you cursor into the corner.

It took me about a month to get used to not being able to do this when I added a monitor to the left of my primary :v:
I don't have to do that because I know how to use my super key effectively :eng101:
I installed Server 2012 in VirtualBox before I go insane and put it on my real server once I rebuild it next week. Metro isn't too bad on it. I haven't tested Hyper-V with it yet since I can't do a VM in a VM, but if it works anything like the 2008 RT machines in one of my IT classes it shouldn't be a problem.

I see that it's possible to convert a physical Linux machine into a virtual machine, though I can't imagine that going 100% smoothly, so I'll have to reinstall that from scratch.

I have a monitor to my right but I made the resolution slightly smaller so in the top right and top left theres still a wall where my cursor won't move into the second screen, but it can still move onto it in the middle.

The corner actually catches the mouse like that by default in RTM, no need to mess around with the resolution.

It's interesting because, yes here I go again, you put tiles like that off to the side and its functionality nearly mimics that of Longhorn's sidebar where it used tiles instead of gadgets.
It too had a Music and Videos tile, ability to search from it, ability to launch applications (quick launch was moved to it), News tile, Stocks tile, Photos tile, Messenger tile, Notifications and more.

Use WMware player, it's more efficient and makes better use of the graphics card than virtual box. Also, have you tried Active Directory and group policies to see if they've made any improvements?

I used 8 on VMWare and it was slow as shit, as did other people I knew, when I reinstalled it in Vbox it was almost like it was a local install.

God damn that server manager is sexy. That's how Explorer should look.

Being extremely new to Windows Server, I haven't got too far into the OS yet. I've used Hyper-V a little in class, though besides that I know very little. Which is why I'm installing it on my server next week.
If I buy the Windows 8 upgrade from Windows 7, will it give me a new key or will it work on the old one? I'm using a friend's Windows 7 key he got from his school and I don't want to abuse it if it just uses the same key and I would rather just buy it new for $70.

That is amazing. Why didn't Microsoft think of this?
How do you call the full start screen? click on the corner again?
I think a search bar at the bottom in a translucent grey of the menu (or what ever colour you chose for the background) would look good. Much like how the search bar looks like in Android 4.1.

it's confusing and convoluted. are the tiles live? is it always on the side? what if I snap an app and it covers it? what does it look like for a 1366x768 monitor? 1024x768? what's the point of having a desktop tile if I'm already on the desktop? what happens if I want to search?
the whole point of a full-screen start menu is that you're not looking at anything else on the screen anyways (eye tracking showed that when you open the classic menu, you're eyes are not looking at anything else).

Pretty much. I admit that it's pretty darn sexy, but I don't think the functionality would be better in any way.

What is the difference between this and a taskbar where you pin programs, or even ust an always-on start menu?
I understand that the start screen is a big change and no one is used to it yet, but you need disruptions in the status quo sometimes. This is barely any different than what we have now.
Anyways, I like the start screen. I think it works well and is fluid and responsive. The desktop is a bit jarring but I'm getting used to it. Glad I upgraded.
Top tip for those of you who are planning on deploying Server 2012 and managing it from Windows 8 if you're outside EN-US (including brits like me):
RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) for Windows 8 RTM has FINALLY been released here, but if you installed Windows 8 with a language that isn't English (United States), the update installer will say that it's installed successfully but won't actually install anything (it doesn't even throw an error anywhere). To get it to install, you'll need to head over to MSDN or similar and get your mittens on the "Windows 8 Language Pack - DVD (Multiple Languages)" - it's a 1.4gb x86 / 2.0gb x64 download, which is a huge pain in the ass, but once you've got it, mount it (mine didn't mount in windows, I had to open it with winRAR) and extract the en-us .cab file to your desktop. Change the file extension to .mlc, run it, and follow the language installation bullshit. After that, you can delete the language pack and iso to free up some space (it's an installer, not a symlink). RSAT should install without a hitch after that, and you can disable / enable features fine from Windows Features.

System Builders (OEM that we can buy) pricing to be roughly the same as 7.
whenever I try to install an app from the store I get this; I get no results on google and I've no idea what it means

I'll try it sometime but I'm not expecting to like it much.
