Dick move, but it's Stardock so it really was to be expected.
oh i'm sure some reddit thing will call them out on this bullshit
So Stardock totally lied about making Start8 free, dicks.
Yeah man, those assholes, charging for software that a lot of people will find useful, at an attractive price point too!
Yeah man, those assholes, charging for software that a lot of people will find useful, at an attractive price point too!
Those assholes because just a few months ago they stated it would remain free of charge. Now the best you get is some trial.

Did you miss the part where they lied!??

Yeah, sorry, that kinda went over my head as I'm not new to this whole software thing.
Or they changed their mind. Maybe development ended up costing a lot more than they anticipated. Maybe they didn't think the product would sell at first and assigned more resources once they did.
It's not the end of the world.
I hate stardock it looks like shit to me.

well on the bright side this will mean even less people using and enjoying Windows 8, so a higher chance of people going to Linux or something, which coupled with Valve making Steam for Linux and encouraging Linux development, may finally free us PC Gamers and PC Enthusiusts from the shitware that is any version of Windows ever

Wow... Someone's biased.
Installed Windows 8 on my laptop last Friday, I'm pretty much used to the UI now, probably moving main PC to Windows 8 this week.

I don't understand this logic. If somebody gets confused and annoyed trying to learn Windows 8's new interface why the flying fuck would they move to Linux? They'd have to relearn everything if they did that. It would take even more work than just learning whats new in Windows.
In my opinion windows 8 is awesome! I love some of the more nifty features like the calendar on my lock screen, a few of the metro apps, and it's uncanny ability to increase my desire to switch to Linux every day!

Also, people expect Windows to look a certain way, never having used Linux, they don't know what to expect so they just expect it to look like anything, but they'd also assume it's designed sensibly. I'm just going to get as many Windows 7 Pro licences as I can and may be I'll switch to Mac or Linux in 2016/2017 or something.
It doesn't have to be .edu, any school email is fine (or at least mine worked and it ends with .fi).
Nice. I don't start school until Winter term.
Alright so I redeemed two "Windows PC upgrades to Windows 8" coupons so I will get two copies of Windows 8 Pro for $30 in total. I was just wondering, how do upgrades work? Will I always be forced to install Windows 7 THEN install Windows 8 or can I just install it on a blank drive normally without any hassle?

People relearn all the time. Let's not act like Windows 8 won't be a learning experience to these people.

You're right, it's just that too many people forget that you constantly relearn Windows whether you realize it or not.
You're right, it's just that too many people forget that you constantly relearn Windows whether you realize it or not.
But relearning Windows is a lot less difficult than learning Linux for the first time. At least on Windows, the basics remain the same between versions.

Not really.
Most users just want to install applications, and the most used distributions include software centres.

Windows is inferior to Linux or OSX from a coding perspective
or any perspective really
it's like comparing console gaming to PC gaming
or dumbphones to smartphones

The coding perspective of it hardly matters to the end user as long as it works. And it does work.
Also some of the worst analogies I've heard :v:

OSX is a Unix OS as of 10.5
Linux isn't
OSX has proper high PPI/DPI scaling
most other OS's do not

this literally could not matter less (Linux is UNIX-like, fyi)
and ppi/dpi scaling is up to the DE/distro

Linux distros are easier to use than Windows
Windows has no package manager, your software needs an update? Fuck You Go download a .exe you piece of garbage you
With most Linux distros, you have preinstalled Firefox, Libre Office, etc and an app store (if you will) with tons of well known software
Need Chrome? Get it exactly the same way you got in Windows or Mac (Google Homepage) Need Skype? Get it the same way you got it on Windows or Mac
Linux is care free and everything updates on its own, no reformats or anything, just like smartphones. Easy as pie (I like blueberry pies btw)

Nope. Windows is easier to use for the average computer user for a few reasons. Windows has actual, paid tech support (not the best, but still more than Linux can say.) Most software updates itself, so that argument of yours is absolutely invalid. Most windows installs come with IE, which is perfectly fine for many, as well as Microsoft Office.
Your argument about getting chrome or skype says that the process for linux is the same as for windows or mac, which doesn't actually say linux is easier.
What do you mean by "no reformats or anything?" When you install linux, you have to format.
Also, using the command line in Linux is not something most computer users know how to do. I don't know how you get off posting about how Linux is easier than Windows.

This couldn't matter less. Most applications now include their own update mechanisms. I haven't had to redownload an application for an update in over three years.

And with Windows 8, you have (a shockingly well-built) Internet Explorer 10, a basic word processor and office suite (comparable to LibreOffice? No, but I've written many a paper in Wordpad with no ill effects.), and an app store with tons of well-known software.

Which is to say, get it from the web page. There's no difference. If that was your point, then good job... At doing nothing to further your point.

HAHAHAHA... Wow. Really? Care-free? Updates on its own? No reformats? Easy as pie? I'd like some of what you're smoking, man, because every experience I've had with Linux (and I swore by it for three years) was the most bone-grinding, soul-crushing tour of hell I've ever had. From wireless drivers to graphics drivers to printers to weird font scaling to programs randomly breaking when I hadn't touched them in weeks... Sounds real fun. It wasn't.
Sir, you are deluded, indoctrinated, ignorant. You have my sincerest condolences.

Also, apt is far easier to use than any install wizard.
sudo apt-get install <application name that you can almost always fucking guess>

Linux, over the last two years, has gotten rid of driver problems for the most part.
I still have more problems getting drivers to work in windows than I do in linux.
