Those assholes because just a few months ago they stated it would remain free of charge. Now the best you get is some trial.
Fuck that, I'll just keep the one they gave me in my email. I keep the installer in my Dropbox.
I'd disagree, since people want Macbooks so badly because Windows is not a good OS. Both OSX and Linux have allot of similarities, care-free package managers, good and consistent GUI's, better performance and optimization, etc
heck it'd be allot faster due to not being on NTFS and using EXT3
Look I got no experience with Linux, but I feel like you are way off base on OSX. I have been using Windows 8 and OSX on two computers, and I don't see why people keep lauding OSX like it is some miracle. Windows 8 has great optimization and performance. People know not to get shitty PCs anymore. OSX on the other hand, I have found consistently worse performance wise, despite being roughly the same internally, and its GUI is unattractive. On top of that, Windows 8 is much better task management wise, as I find it easier to do a lot of things at once on it.
But hey, I actually like the Start Screen. So maybe I'm just an idiot.
To be fair, the classic window system is not that great.
You rarely can put programs side-by-side and having them over each-other is rarely useful. Not to mention that a lot of programs you run maximized/fullscreen, such as browser, creative/editing software (photoshop, etc) and games, rendering the whole window system useless.
I know metro is not designed as a desktop environment replacement. But I think the concept of full-screen programs, with the possibility of having a secondary one to the side, may not be such a bad idea.
Better than 90% of the time I have two windows open at a minimum. I don't even run crap like autocad fullscreen. It takes up two thirds of my generic 24 inch monitor, while I have other stuff off to the side. Could be a browser. Could be a list of instructions, or anything else for that matter.
People that I know with multiple monitor set ups take this much further. One of the people I did a build for wanted two screens so she could have 4-5 things open at once.
Flipping back and forth is retarded. It's a total waste of time.
So my friend was trying to tell me how Windows 8 was going to force you to start up metro and THEN go into the desktop? Is that true? I mean it really doesn't matter to me but I'm just curious, He also said something about anything like steam or origin would be considered illegal by microsoft and that I wouldnt be able to play any steam or Origin games.
This is what he said
"Windows 8 is horrible and is going to kill pc gaming because things like steam and origin (eww) will not be legal on the platform. Anything not certified by Microsoft will be illegal on windows 8. "
Yeah, Windows 8 throws you at the start screen when you log in. The thing where anything that lets you play games on it is illegal or whatever is complete bullshit, your friend is dumb.

Yes you boot into metro. That's why its called the 'Start Screen'.
No, STEAM isn't illegal. If something isn't certified by microsoft, you won't be able to download it from the alp store, but you could always just just get it normally.

Alright cool, actually hes not MY friend but hes a friend of my friend. Do you think that there will be a way to disable metro? I would like to be able to keep my shit private...

What does metro have to do with privacy? If you're talking about infomation on the tiles, you can always hide the tiles you don't want to display. And no, it's not possible to simply "disable" metro, it's hardcoded in to the bone. You can get Start8 if you want though, or install the Windows 7 shell if you really want, but it breaks half the OS in the process. I don't have a link handy but you should be able to find it with some searching.

Ah okay, I thought the tiles would display anything and everything. I haven't really had much time to look at windows 8 and I don't have my own PC to try it out on as of now.
If Linux and Mac are the easier option, why in the fuck does windows have a majority of the PC market?
I don't know how old you are, but it certainly has absolutely fuck all to do with the quality of the different operating systems available today and how easy or hard they are to use.
MS are majority because they used heavy handed marketing and bullying tactics for years, and eventually people were so reliant on DOS/Windows software that they stuck with Microsoft.
OS X has a tiny market share that exists in part due to the handful of professional suites available either only on the Mac or at a quality much higher on Mac than PC.
Don't you get it? Users will use whatever has the software they're used to. People don't use MS software because it's easier, they use MS software because they're used to it. They don't even need to be used to the interface, they just like the fucking name because that's how absolutely majorly retarded 99% of the population is. You hand them a KDE4 box and tell them "It's Windows 7" and they'll rave about how awesome and intuitive the UI is. Give them Windows 8, call it Linux, and they'll shit their pants over how hard and different it is.
If think you users choose based on what is actually the best, easiest to use, you're kidding yourself. They use whatever they are forced to use by Microsoft due to vendor lock-in half the time, and what has the cutest UI the other half of the time.
So my friend was trying to tell me how Windows 8 was going to force you to start up metro and THEN go into the desktop?
This is true. But what you have to realize is that once you get used to the metro start screen, you'll start using it like the desktop. So you can just launch whatever desktop program you frequently use from the start screen and it'll go to desktop.
On to the Windows 9 thread then.
Well the next version is coming out next year, it's gonna be called "Windows Blue" it will be smaller changes, like how Apple's OSX Lion is a tiny jump
Intel's CEO also said (like a few days ago) Windows 8 is incomplete, and development of 8 will continue months after 8 comes out in October, hopefully they work on the desktop experience since they sure have focused mostly on Metro apps and shit us PC enthusiusts don't give a damn about

I doubt they're going to do any drastic changes to the interface after it's released.
If Linux and Mac are the easier option, why in the fuck does windows have a majority of the PC market? Because they don't care about NTFS versus EXT3, they don't care about package managers or optimization. As long as the OS does what it always does, and the same buttons do what they always do and you install programs the same way, the average customer is absolutely content. They'd rather rest with mediocrity than go through the hassle of getting something better.
jesus I never said they understood the difference, but they sure as hell notice how great OSX is, and how Windows is much more of a hassle. Sorry to say but people buy Macs not because they understand things I mentioned, but all these improvements stack up and make the system more snappy, easier to use, and fairly care-free.
This is like saying customers don't prefer more powerful game consoles (like 360 over PS2) because they don't understand CPU architecture, what ram is, what screen resolution is, etc

Windows Blue hasn't been confirmed yet though, so a Windows 8.5/9 thread will be a while before it comes.
So... What's on the (serious) wishlist for Windows 9 then?
Internet Explorer 11
So... What's on the (serious) wishlist for Windows 9 then?
Aero
better desktop-metro integration
aka
any desktop-metro integration at all
So... What's on the (serious) wishlist for Windows 9 then?
You have a wishlist for Windows? I don't think I can find a single feature since XP that I actually care about. Maybe the improved explorer and improved start menu, but that's it.
So... What's on the (serious) wishlist for Windows 9 then?
more consistant and complete UI for the desktop, newer file system (that is bootable unlike the ReFS), stuff that Windows doesn't have yet but Linux and OSX have had for over a decade or more, etc
I hope I heard wrong, but is it true that Metro only supports DirectX?
If so, that's pretty shitty.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/sIkWD.jpg[/t]
Just in case anyone is wondering about what I meant about a further expanded Aero snap feature.
I use WinSplit Revolution to do this, basically its like having a tiling window manager on Windows, and its completely awesome!
It's weird that Microsoft didn't do something similar in Aero Snap because there's a way to do that, but on for one application at a time.

That's cool. I should probably bother to learn a tiling WM at some point.
Amiga, how do you make the corner look so great?

Oh, RP had aero?

I cannot express how dated NTFS is.
For it's time it was pretty decent, but seriously, come on. Where is my journaling? Where are a million other wonderful little optimization and failsafe options?

I'm not sure what you mean by where is my journaling but journaling was added in Windows 2000's NTFS.
Maybe wrong on this but I was under the impression that it was sort of bootstrapped on.
