So a high end PC wouldn't benefit very much.
Besides the bootup and shutdown times, not really. The focus is on the added features. Just that one button :v:
Damn your purple arrows, Ryan of the "building Windows 8" blog
I just got my hands on a copy of Windows 8 through my school's Dreamspark subscription. This is really weird compared to 7. And then Windows Update completely broke.
I hope Windows 9 focuses on the fragmentation and the desktop part of Windows
How much faster is Windows 8 compared to Windows 7 besides the boot times?
For me it's 50% faster. SSD here. Windows 7 took 30 seconds or so, Windows 8 takes 10-12. I couldn't get back to Windows 7 seeing how slow it felt compared to 8. i7 2600K/i7 3770K GTX580/GTX680 Samsung 830 256GB It's a nice change and I'm not missing W7 at all.
So I guess installing Office 2010 completely broke Windows Update on me. Has anyone else had this happen?
Never happened on me.

shut down options should appear when you click your name in the start menu
I hope Windows 9 focuses on the fragmentation and the desktop part of Windows
You want them to focus on the desktop after Windows 8? Weird. I'd rather they step the fuck away from it to be honest. Fragmentation is an odd thing to focus on considering it's pretty much irrelevant with SSDs, so instead I'd wish for more improvements to the file system to bring it more in line with modern ones.
I hope Windows 9 focuses on the fragmentation and the desktop part of Windows
I would pay one million dollars for Windows if it let me run "Windows store" apps in a window I mean that's the entire name of your product: Windows. Not Fullscreens. [editline]5th October 2012[/editline]
You want them to focus on the desktop after Windows 8? Weird. I'd rather they step the fuck away from it to be honest. Hm if he meant that it makes much more sense.
Hm if he meant that it makes much more sense.
Yeah. There's a Windows Store version of IE10 and a desktop version, which have different features. There's also Evernote which is being developed for both Windows Store and desktop. The problem is, which one do you use? And how closely do (or should) the interfaces match between the two? It's great that developers can have a single app for Windows RT and Windows 8, but does that mean they shouldn't develop or maintain a full desktop version? Should they try to cram features into the Windows Store version that cause clutter, or have people constantly switch between the two because the Windows Store version is so stripped down and minimalistic? These are tough philosophical questions, my friend. Edit: and for the record, I'm a fan of Windows 8, not a hater. I'm just having trouble coming to grips with the new paradigm they've introduced.
eeeee I have an iso of Windows 8 Professional and 2 CD keys. I'm going to play with this when I get home
NEAT! Shutdown & Restart on Right Click http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898501
Why's it that every time you see shutdown options for Windows, whether it be icons on the desktop or on a dock or in some other location, they always use XP's icons?
You want them to focus on the desktop after Windows 8? Weird. I'd rather they step the fuck away from it to be honest.
wait, why? The desktop UI is inconsistent and lacking, and Metro apps will be severely limited compared to traditional Win32 programs, not to mention locked down as fuck. For a non-tablet user, Metro apps offer nothing
Never happened on me.
Fixed itself right after I uninstalled Office, too.

I'm just scared of what would happen if they tried even harder to make a better desktop.
Why's it that every time you see shutdown options for Windows, whether it be icons on the desktop or on a dock or in some other location, they always use XP's icons?
Probably because, since Vista, Windows doesn't use shutdown icons, because of the new menu. However, it still has the old XP ones. And people find it easier to use those than look for custom icons.
Right. And that was Microsoft's attempt at a good interface. I'm just scared of what would happen if they tried even harder to make a better desktop.
They wouldn't drastically change the desktop to where you couldn't use it as before. They know the importance of the desktop and how it works. They've stressed this many times in the B8 blog. That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement though. But they could be colored so that they would fit on the menu. Here's all the images (as seen in the start menu): Log off, Shutdown, Shutdown and update, Sleep, Hibernate, Lock. Sure you wouldn't use this exact image, but you could recreate it and place them inside a dummy DLL resource.

I've built several machines with samsung 830s and intel 520s, and win 7 boots in 15 seconds on machines with a 5 second splash screen on the bios. I've seen it get under 10 seconds with motherboards that post quickly. Win 8 is marginally faster. It seems to make a significantly bigger percentage difference on machines that are slow to boot.
I was still hoping they would fix the svchosts processes because I usually end up with around 30 of them because these programs are dicks and dont like each other
They're for different services/types.
They're for different services/types.
But do I really need 30 of them after every last possible program is closed?
But do I really need 30 of them after every last possible program is closed?
If you want to cut back run TASKLIST /FI "imagename eq svchost.exe" /svc in CMD to see what services are running and where. Then go to services.msc and set them to disabled/manual for ones you don't need.
I'm really kinda lost on this...but is it possible to get the real version of Windows 8 right now? That I can install and all that? Not the release candidate or release preview. I heard there was RTM but I believe that's a certain version only for manufacturers? Sorry for being illiterate, feel free to inform me!

I am burning a disc of this very ISO right now.

There's apparently a section on Dreamspark Premium for my college, but I wouldn't know who to ask to get a login. (The tech department never responds to a single email I send them, wtf)
You can get a legitimate version of the RTM through Dreamspark, Technet or MSDN.
