It really pisses me off that my college has their own proprietary system for distributing MSDNAA stuff (are they even allowed to do that?) There's apparently a section on Dreamspark Premium for my college, but I wouldn't know who to ask to get a login. (The tech department never responds to a single email I send them, wtf)
My college also has one. I can't get in on it either. Good thing people at work are reliable (and have MSDN access.)
Oh well, maybe I'll get it for free by the time it hits general availability. Otherwise I'll just spend the damn $40.
I don't have DreamSpark, MSDNAA, or TechNet. The one edu email I have doesn't have premium, so It's safe to assume I won't get it?
There's no fucking loading bar on this Win 8 install. How the hell am I supposed to gauge if it's loading the installer or not!? [editline]5th October 2012[/editline] well a spinning circle appeared for a minute and then it loaded

[editline]5th October 2012[/editline] well a spinning circle appeared for a minute and then it loaded
same thing happens when I try to run Win8 in VBox, it sits there for like 3 minutes then finally shows a loading circle.
well hey I have windows 8 running flawlessly on a C2D laptop i don't like metro on wp7 at all since it's just black/white + accent color, but in win 8 it's pretty time to upgrade my personal laptop too with my second key
But do I really need 30 of them after every last possible program is closed?
Every last program? You mean like Windows? Because that's what those programs are running.
forcing myself to use metro is a good experience I actually really, really like it
Are people who installed RTM going to have to do anything with the final release?
Are people who installed RTM going to have to do anything with the final release?
No, it's the same thing. I would imagine that the delay between RTM and GA is packaging and shipping and getting into stores and all that.
Are people who installed RTM going to have to do anything with the final release?
What do you mean? RTM (release to manufacturer) is the final release. Unless you installed the trial version of RTM, you won't have to do anything (unless you activated it illegitimately).
ok I installed win 8 on my desktop finally and the metro changes are trying my patience a bit especially considering I have 2 screens with 2 screens it just turns into a clunky annoyance
If I get the RTM from MSDN, can I install it on 2 computers, ie. my desktop and my laptop?
If I get the RTM from MSDN, can I install it on 2 computers, ie. my desktop and my laptop?
I think the general rule is that you can use one licence of Windows on a desktop and a laptop as long as you never have them on at the same time. I'm not sure whether that's changed with Windows 8.
ok I installed win 8 on my desktop finally and the metro changes are trying my patience a bit especially considering I have 2 screens with 2 screens it just turns into a clunky annoyance
Try having a second monitor at the left of your main screen. Have fun trying to hit the start 'button'.
Try having a second monitor at the left of your main screen. Have fun trying to hit the start 'button'.
Windows 8 has 'sticky' corners. I have 2 screens, second one is on the left side. I never have trouble hitting start.
I've installed Windows 8 on my desktop now, I need to change the default installation path, but there is no ProgramFilesDir in my regedit. [editline]6th October 2012[/editline] Oh, Steams backup thingey doesn't work on Windows 8, fucking great. Is there a way to unpack these kind of files? [t]http://i.imgur.com/kOMcH.png[/t]
Oh, Steams backup thingey doesn't work on Windows 8, fucking great. Is there a way to unpack these kind of files?
Did you try re-downloading steambackup.exe? I've used the feature several times on RP and RTM and it worked without a hitch.
I've decided to leave Dropbox forever and use Box.com instead. [editline]6th October 2012[/editline] Box gives 2TB of bandwitch each month, that's neat. Dropbox gives 200GB.
If you upgrade your free account (which is capped at 10GB of bandwidth per month) to a paid account (Personal+25, Personal+50, Business or Enterprise) you can increase your monthly bandwidth to 2TB per month.
[editline]6th October 2012[/editline] Bandwidth*
Anyone else having a problem with nVidia drivers crashing and then recovering themselves randomly? It only happens to me when I have had my computer on for many days straight.
Anyone else having a problem with nVidia drivers crashing and then recovering themselves randomly? It only happens to me when I have had my computer on for many days straight.
Yup, mainly in borderlands 2
Windows 8 has 'sticky' corners. I have 2 screens, second one is on the left side. I never have trouble hitting start.
my problem is that I wish to have start locked to my 2nd monitor, so every time any metro app opens or I hit the start key on my keyboard I want it to open on my 2nd monitor
my problem is that I wish to have start locked to my 2nd monitor, so every time any metro app opens or I hit the start key on my keyboard I want it to open on my 2nd monitor
Set 2nd monitor as primary?
Set 2nd monitor as primary?
Does nothing. [editline]6th October 2012[/editline] Also I managed to restore my shit, through Steams "Backup and Restore games". [editline]6th October 2012[/editline]
Anyone else having a problem with nVidia drivers crashing and then recovering themselves randomly? It only happens to me when I have had my computer on for many days straight.
I had that on 7 too, so not an 8 specific problem.
Set 2nd monitor as primary?
Doesn't matter since Metro is accessible on both monitors regardless it'll stick to the last monitor you opened it on, but it's not permanent whatsoever
hnngh I just had a cool idea for another windows 8 start menu replacement and I can't properly explain it or visualize it help [editline]6th October 2012[/editline] well more correctly a metro/Zune style replacement
Its a bit shit how it behaves though. Open the start screen and have it reorder/obliterate your open metro apps.
I really wish I could have Metro permanently open on my screen while the desktop is still usable. It'd be nice to have like a Metro music player open on the second screen (I usually just have skype and spotify open on my second screen) while keeping everything else... desktop [editline]6th October 2012[/editline] I mean you can have apps open on one screen, but not just like Metro itself. Having all your apps easily accessible on the side would be really useful for me.
i can't believe they got rid of Aero :'(
What's funny is now you'll see software like TrueTransparency come back for 8 support. Which actually still works in 8. Barely.
I can't believe they didn't add a new and tidy UX paradigm for developers to follow. it was just a half assed cludge to stop it slowing down horrifically underpowered tablets.
And the metro styled program controls in the corner. They look fine by themselves, but compared to like Chrome they're horridly out of place
