I'm particularly interested in seeing this pseudo-retina-display of theirs for the Windows 8 Pro Surface. Sporting 1080p on a 10.6" screen.
Here's me, measuring and cutting out a piece of paper to the exact physical dimensions of the tablet, to get a better idea of how big it actually is and how I would hold it. I kind of wish they would put a quarter into the images next to the Surface Tablets to give a better comparison of the scaling of the device itself.
just tried running samsung kies on Windows 8 :suicide:
Runs flawless here.
but they wont, windows surface rt (which will be the only one which sells in any quantity) will only be used for browsing and light app-ing with all the apps it has right now anyway
I was speaking about tablets in general, not the Surface.
Windows 8 is a lot faster and smoother than windows 7
That's spectacular, however irrelevant as Windows 7 isn't a tablet OS, it's a desktop OS. Not to mention benchmarks show its speed is on par with 7 with the exception of shutdown and boot times which are in fact much better. But it doesn't matter anyway because comparatively speaking, Windows is still quite heavier than the purpose built OSs.

I have no problems with the default start screen at all, but I think I'm gonna try this one out.
Don't worry! They have a backup plan for selling the Surface, you can double it as a skateboard, you can more functionality out of RT as a skate than you ever will as a tablet!

You get Office for free and I think 6 months of Xbox music subscribtion. That's not bad, and if anything it's just impressive that it can hold up to that.

Uhh, it has that Linux Cinnamon desktop environment vibe to it

How is it impressive that MS gives away two of its own services? It's basic marketing if anything.

Look at the context, I'm talking about the skateboarding. It's not impressive that they include their own services, but it's pretty nice still. Xbox Music is pretty much Zune, meaning you can stream and download (and keep!) quite a lot of media in six months.

Oh my, pretty. Don't like the sound of the integrated 'pokki app store' though.
I hope MS will offer something like ChevronWP for Windows RT.
It's nice, but the fact that it's all locked down would just kill it.
I do wonder how it'll be implemented though. No admin rights/UAC basically?

Gah, I was at work and didn't really see much of it, I thought it was a joke.

Would be nice if it actually worked, the nut doesn't show up.
We had a Microsoft rep come to the college today to show us Windows 8. He showed us the internal app store Microsoft uses for their employees during the demonstration, and it was pretty neat. I can see it being really useful for enterprises. He also mentioned that the Surface Pro had a pressure sensitive digitizer but couldn't say who made it.
In terms of tablets, he said the only real thing the Surface has over other OEM's (Samsung, etc) is being a little more durable and having the colored covers. He said if you don't want to wait for the Surface Pro then Samsung's new offerings (Specifically the Ativ Pro) is a great option since Microsoft worked extremely close with Samsung and their Windows 8 offerings (Specifically the BUILD tablet, for example).
I bet Steve Balmer didn't dare stand on that thing.
Microsoft rep said it was legit. Steve's apparently a little wack. And also normally treats his surface like it's his baby.

I skateboard on my children all the time
I'm not sure if this would be the right thread or not, but anyways I'm going to reinstall Windows 7 on my computer soon and I don't have a disc, but I know people here have posted links to some kind of Microsoft authorised site (or a part of the MS site itself) where users can download copies of Windows 7, just not the product keys. I'm fine with that because I still have my key.
Does anyone know this site? Thanks
Nevermind, found it

Avoid the pain of installing OpenGL accelerated graphics drivers in Linux.
The all-new Windows 8 is out now.

err:winediag:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo Direct rendering is disabled, most likely your OpenGL drivers haven't been installed correctly (using GL renderer "Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV670", version "1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.11.2)").

OpenGL drivers for my Intel HD3100 (GMA 965) chipset on my laptop are already integrated, and work fine. I can even play Minecraft.

then your hardware is either unsupported or you just fucked something up

You can blame AMD for that

It was just an example from Google; I don't even have Linux installed anymore. I have no use for it (all my programs are on Windows). But it's known that ATI/AMD drivers are hard to get installed and enabled for OpenGL acceleration.

Sure, I'll accept that AMD has shitty Linux support when it comes to GPU's. But windows also has it's fair share of shitty driver support (hello soundcards)
These don't even boil down to the operating system either.

It's actually one command on most of the distributions I used (if you don't count trivial things like wget). I don't know who is saying this, but they shouldn't be generalizing.
Well whatever, that's only one example of why Linux is a lot harder than Windows. Trust me, I've spent my fair share of time wrestling with Linux during boring summers.
