Windows 7 actually seems kinda old when you compare it to W8, in my opinion.
Windows 8 sucks and i hope it fails and burns in hell. The failure of win 8 just might make Microsoft to respect more their desktop users.

Yay, late I know, but I can now play my daily challenges on Minesweeper and Solitaire, woo!
Give me one reason why it sucks other than Metro.
Not suitable for desktop use. No matter what you are trying to do, the metro interface will pop right to your face. Hell, even the server 2012 has metro UI while server OS doesn't even need GUI.

Also Metro is meant for "casual usage" by people like your mom and my mom. It's faster than the old start menu because in my mind, if you're going to use a little pop up window on the lower left corner of the screen, why not just make it full screen? Your eyes are fixated on that tiny window so why not? Metro is faster and more efficient. For people who grow up with Metro, they will love it. For the people who like the start button? There are alternatives where you will never have to touch Metro ever again.
Hell, even the server 2012 has metro UI while server OS doesn't even need GUI.
You realise Server 2012 can be installed as Core with purely powershell access and no / very little GUI?
Have fun fucking around in the command line for 10 minutes instead of just hitting a button.
You obviously don't know anything about server operating systems nor server administration.
You realise Server 2012 can be installed as Core with purely powershell access and no / very little GUI?
Thats progress but i still hate how its even option to install it with that horrible metro UI.
Oh right, I guess you're really that engrossed on whatever is on your screen under the start menu that you're focusing on that instead of the start menu. I had no idea.
Oh I don't know, perhaps something as simple as watching a video? I've got a large screen so I can do multiple things at once for a reason, Metro isn't using it's benefits as it should be doing.
Just did some online retail training for Windows 8, getting a free copy of W8 Pro now. Needless to say I'm intrigued about Windows 8, but I just don't know if I should make the switch from 7.
Thats progress but i still hate how its even option to install it with that horrible metro UI.
"That's progress". You can't deride the previous poster for "knowing nothing about server OSes/admin" when you clearly aren't as up-to-date as you should be. Server Core was around in Windows Server 2008. In fact, it was one of its more-advertised features. What's the issue with having the modern UI in Server, anyway? The only reason you've provided is "I don't like it, so no-one should be allowed to use it."
The messenger app needs Skype support, I was surprised to see that it only supported Facebook and MSN.
You obviously don't know anything about server operating systems nor server administration.
You can browse the filesystem via search, or an app that has it included, I can't imagine why you'd need one as stand-alone in the Metro environment. There isn't one in iOS and I have no idea whether or not one comes in stock android out of the box.
It's pretty essential if you want to avoid the desktop for file management. I used it to copy some files to an external hard disk to view on my Xbox. Metro IE also doesn't allow you to specify a location for saved files so I've also used it to move downloaded PDFs to my document folder. The file manager (I think) he's talking about is here http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/app/file-manager/47b46b46-148c-40a5-a142-e2f98deeb6fd and it's fantastic. Written in Javascript, too.

Lots of people use SD cards, flash drives, etc., and personallly I'd like to manage my files my self - especially with the presence of SkyDrive and so on, where I may not always want the same stuff on there. It's really just a point where they could differentiate themselves, and it really is useful. It's at least a point if I was to buy a tablet (which is very much a possibility now)-

If you have to go digging into the start menu/screen while watching a video, 99% of people will pause it before they go in.

I just wish they'd give the option to go back, what's the harm in having multiple ways of doing things?
I don't have against the Metro UI at all or anything like that. This looks fairly good: But I according to what I've seen, the window style has been changed in later builds, is that true? Do they look kind of like this now? Looks much uglier in my opinion, and if that's true, that's probably the thing that's bothering me the most about Windows 8 :v:

[editline]22nd October 2012[/editline] Also, for people who complain that Microsoft ditched Aero too soon: Classic UI (95-2000): 1995-2001, 6 years Luna (XP): 2001-2006, 5 years Aero (Vista, 7): 2006-2012, 6 years. So yeah. Aero lasted for as long as other Windows themes. Only difference now is that Microsoft is obviously trying to leave all the legacy stuff behind - and it makes sense to do that.
http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-next-hate-is-nothing-new
People who use "People hate change!1!!!" as an excuse to justify bad changes are the biggest retards on this Earth and they need to get shot. People hate bad changes. Doesn't take a fucking genius to figure that one out.
Well i guess they somehow have to introduce metro. Maybe on Windows 9 metro will be more advanced.

I'm not arguing for the Start screen or against it, I just found it interesting and thought others would too. When Vista came around, there were people complained about its UI and argued that XP's was better. Then same happened with 7 for those who skipped Vista. So who's to say that in a few years people won't change their opinions about 8? It doesn't really apply exclusively to 8 or Windows for that matter. Look at everyone bitch whenever YouTube changes saying it's shit and the previous version was the best despite the fact the same people complained that that version was shit and the version before that was the best and so on and so forth. Just because you think its bad doesn't mean everyone else has to or "be shot".

Would it be worth getting the release preview? I'm really tempted. Just wanted to check if there where any issues with software compatibility.
I just installed the beta a few days ago and I've been noticing a lot of lag and a major increase in my ping when playing video games. Is this common? If it keeps happening I think I'll just go back to Windows 7.

Is there any word yet on what it will cost as a standalone? I know there is the £25 pound upgrade but ill be wanting to Install it on my new build and as I'm using my OS from my old shop bought PC's hard-drive I don't have the product key anymore. I've been fretting about this quite a bit. I've heard that sometimes the product key is written somewhere inside the case on pre installed PC's. Would it be worth having a look? or is that just a myth. Just did some digging, Found a program that finds your product key. So I'l just get the upgrade.
