Can I buy that 40 dollar upgrade code and then use it with a disc?
why the crap is my userfolder named maxof_000 :(
also is there a way to disable the metro apps handling stuff by default?
I don't even care if I'm wrong, but I can't agree with that. It's too big, why does it have to fill the whole screen?
Why does it have to be tablet oriented? Why make everything so big that it takes forever to get to something else?
This has been answered before, and I shall answer it again:
The reason it's full screen is because when you're using the start menu you're totally focused on that tiny window anyway, so why not make it full screen? That way, you can fit ALL of your shit on there instead of a few choice programs. And no, it doesn't take forever, in fact, it's quite a bit faster.
IMO it was an excellent design decision.
why the crap is my userfolder named maxof_000 :(
Because you're to cool to be constrained to normal folder names.
Uhhh, it doesn't?
If a 3 year old can use Windows 8 perfectly, I'm sure you can too.
If anything I work faster than I did on Windows 7, I'm very comfortable on 8.
Perhaps its stubbornness, but I cannot deal with metro. If I had to get 8 I would definitely have to buy stardock's added start menu.

To me big = dumbed down.

Then don't fucking use it. Either way stop bitching about something you haven't even tried yourself.
Jesus, some people piss me off....

wow i'm sorry microsoft wants to make their flagship OS easier to use and not convoluted and difficult for clearly intelligent people like you
So anyone knows how MS actually checks the date of purchase of your copy of win7 for the 15$ upgrade? I bought my laptop on february and I just went "lol i bought dis in june" and they sent me my promotional code and everything. Now I'm running the upgrade assistant..
[editline]26th October 2012[/editline]
OH LOL nvm I did in fact fool them into giving me the discount....

So you didn't need to put your previous windows keys anywhere?
By the way, when you upgrade an get the iso, is it an independent one or does it need the preinstalled partition of yourlaptop?
found this for people on Windows 8 already http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/feature-packs Windows Media Center!!
I thought only like ~6% of Windows users used media center? People care about it now?
There's only one thing I don't like about Metro: you can't tell which metro apps are open easily, it seems

Oh boo hoo, big baby has to upgrade windows.

I'm poor and my family shares a computer.

Move your cursor to the upper-left hand corner then down, that will show you all of the open apps.

You stole my automerge D:

none of them are really "open" in the background (however win + tab is now the metro multitasking shortcut)
I thought only like ~6% of Windows users used media center? People care about it now?
either way 10 bucks is a pretty cheap addon for HTPCs

Cursor to the left of the screen (or swipe from the left), or win+tab.
So, is it impossible to change your user account folder? I'd rather have C:/Users/Max/*** like on W7 rather than C:/Users/maxof_000/*** :(

This ought to work in Win 8 too

Annoyingly in Windows it'll stick like that. No idea why you have a _000 on it. The only way I can think of would be to create a local account named Max then link it to a Microsoft account afterwards since the folder is named by your first name on your live account.
There's only one thing I don't like about Metro: you can't tell which metro apps are open easily, it seems
I read somewherethat the OS decides when to close the apps.
Max, did you make a live account? If that's the case, It might have done that since your account name was already used.
(I'm not sure about this though)
Going to be installing Windows 8 on my laptop tonight to try it out and then on my desktop this weekend if I like it.

yeah, should have I picked a local account?
Is nobody else having trouble inputting their billing info? I called Microsoft support and it's apparently a really widespread problem, but I haven't seen anybody but me post about it here.
Am I really the only one?

I haven't had any problems with the billing info.

Create a local account 'Max', then link it to an MS account. Doesn't that keep the name?
Or try what I linked, it should still work.
I thought only like ~6% of Windows users used media center? People care about it now?
I don't use it; I just want it because it's free!

What kind of problem? Some people here said it would only let them put in Canadian provinces (and the best solution to that is obviously to move to Canada)
