Now I know this is very lazy of me, but can anyone tell me if there are any drawbacks from going Win 7 -> Win 8? And how is backwards compatibility, I am a programer and that's pretty important.
try defragging it
defragging an almost empty hard drive that just was formatted? :v:
but alright I'll do it

only thing I found was Mumble's in game overlay doesn't work properly, and often will cause games to crash
Now i really wish my fucking hard drive didn't fail because you guys are making me want to use Windows 8 even more.
Rocking Windows 8 right now. Really liking it.
I made my own BF3 tile.

Blue, because you know :v:
Also, what's a good free way that people can submit custom metro tile icons?
I'm thinking DA, but that would be annoying.
Can you disable metro?
I don't mind it I just would prefer the desktop only.

That's like asking if you can remove the vanilla from vanilla ice cream. No it cannot, it's the backbone of the system.

I thought you could get the regular old start menu back.
[editline]27th October 2012[/editline]
I really liked how it just installed everything that I had before back onto windows 8.
Just got rid of my Windows 7 partition, transferring some games from Windows.old then getting rid of that, and I can enjoy my 1tb HDD again instead with Windows 8.
Hell yeah!

At least make it a dark/navy blue... come on. xD
... and DeviantArt maybe? Idk... I'd like to browse through some good user-made tiles.
Is anyone else getting an error when trying to buy Windows 8 through the upgrade assistant app? (US only) It worked fine this morning but now it isn't working.

What kind of error? I am having loads of trouble with it.
Upgraded earlier tonight with the $15 deal. Only had to uninstall four things: Ultramon, MSE, USB3.0 drivers, and some Bluetooth drivers.
Upgraded from Win7 Ultimate just fine. Everything seems to be working as it was. I'm relieved and pleased at how smooth the upgrade was. Just need to get used to a few of the changes.

It says that online purchases can't me made in my area/region, yet it worked fine this morning.

Yeah, in my search for help, I saw a few people having that issue. My app thinks I'm in Canada, somebody in Canada has one that thinks they are in the US and numerous other people are having errors saying purchases can't be made in their area/region.
I saw a post saying it had something to do with automatic IP lookups and not being able to choose what country you are in. It's a pretty fucking stupid situation.

It seems like there's quite a few things they never thought through when it comes to purchasing.
I just don't get how somebody could think it was a good idea. If anybody in this thread could make me understand why it happened this way, I would be grateful
I just want to know why they're forcing us to buy it though an app. It's just stupid.

I think they want to make sure the previous OS install is genuine, but that doesn't explain how the purchase is forced through the app. They could verify the OS is genuine through other means, like giving your license key to somebody over the phone or something.
and if you have one of them fancy bootloader tricks that makes your win7 illegally genuine it can be fooled by that too
I wondered this because I was gonna use my $15 key for my sister's laptop but I already loaded win8 on it and the upgrade assistant won't activate win 8
upgrade assistant won't activate win 8
Try running it in Windows 7 Compatibility mode. Idk if it works, but I've seen numerous posts saying to do that.

pfahahaha if this works I'm going to go to bed because i'm tired
although either way i'm going to bed so idk

they don't do any of that crap actually
it should activate just fine with pirated windows
apparently ms wants to reduce piracy that way

worth a shot i guess
worst comes to worst I pull out my win7 dvd and do an actual upgrade
Why wont half of the start tiles not open anything? Store, Weather, Mail, News, People. Basically all the ones on the left of the start menu by default just do that animation that covers the screen then it goes back to the start menu.

I give up. I am completely baffled. I don't know why this app exists. If it's not to verify your windows is genuine, if it won't let you upgrade to windows 8 and it won't let you purchase the upgrade itself, I have no clue at all why this application even exists.

I just did a live chat with support. They claimed that the servers were overwhelmed and to call store support in the morning.
It also has nothing to do with checking if the OS genuine according to them, it's just a way to purchase the OS.
Why would overwhelmed servers lead Microsoft to believe I am in Canada? What am I failing to understand here?
They were just giving me BS reasons as to why is wasn't working.
they made me download another app used to purchase the OS (preorder) and it barfed out a million server connect errors.
I have like three more promo codes to use :(
