But when you click it, you could deny the 'Do you want to turn off Windows?' message.
microsoft secure download manager
the horror, the horror
You still have to tell it no every time you accidentally mash it, while it may not be shutting your computer off its still annoying.
How about windows8 should have an option to detect, if its installed on a Desktop/Laptop/Tablet, and change the position of the Shutdown button to a place, wich makes sense for the Plattform (or an option to change it).
Microsoft won't do that, they want to unify each form factor, if each one has a slightly different UI it isn't quite a seamless transition between them.
It would be nice, but they won't do it.
Thats what I don't like about Microsoft. Some decisions from the design departement are backwards as fuck.
Really, it's nothing to get mad about. I think it's a good thing because it makes it less possible to shut a computer down accidentally.
That's one thing that I didn't like coming from XP to 7. Once you press the shutdown menu button, the system will shutdown without confirmation, unless a program isn't closing. So if for some reason you finger decides to go all trigger happy while you mouse over it or accidentally click it trying to get to sleep, I guess that's too damn bad.
Now its at least out of the way.
Contemplating upgrading to Windows 8, how does the download feature work? I'm not too bothered about keeping my programs, everything has slown down quite a lot as it is at the moment so I'd probably want to wipe my computer anyways. Is there a way to put the Windows 8 download onto a USB key or something? I'm fearful of what will happen if I have to reformat my PC in the future. How does the 1 PC limit work, can I deactivate Windows 8 on this PC and install it on another? How does it all work! I looked on their website but it's very unhelpful and basically implies that I download Windows 8, install it and that's all there is to it.
I chose the "keep my files option" and then paid. After you pay it gives you several options. You can download it as an .iso, save it in a usb stick or something, install it later from the desktop and something else. However, I changed my mind and didn't want to transfer my files since I had backups so I burned the .iso. If you want to keep your files in win7 then you must follow the instructions carefully.
Or you could just pin shutdown to start if it really bothers you to go to settings or pressing the button on your laptop/desktop
Or you could just pin shutdown to start if it really bothers you to go to settings or pressing the button on your laptop/desktop
And if you wish to have some nice tiles to go with it: http://lrv94.deviantart.com/art/Windows-8-Tiles-For-Obly-Tile-335198454 you can use these.
Or you could just pin shutdown to start if it really bothers you to go to settings or pressing the button on your laptop/desktop
Or on the desktop, I only see it when my PC just booted and when I'm about to shut down, anyway.

Here's the script for that, including timer. Save as a .bat somewhere, then make a shortcut to the .bat and give it any icon you want.
Also, here's a quick way to remove the shortcut arrow: Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile in regedit, then remove 'IsShortcut', and restart Explorer.

You can leave a field blank and it'll be 0. Press enter thrice and it'll instantly shut down.
Their decisions kind of make sense to me, designing a UI that works really well with touch and taking into account just how people interact with it is really quite difficult, and unfortunately the desktop has to suffer a little bit to make sure it works really well on a tablet.
For example, when I'm writing a website, the first thing I do is make it work on mobile, because trying to cram an entire desktop website onto a phone is a massive pain in the ass, you end up either hiding elements and information or having a massive clusterfuck in the end.
After I'm done making it work well on a phone, its very easy to scale that up and have it run on a desktop well.
They kind of made things make sense more for tablet input than for mouse input though. In other words, they're giving priority to a potential customer base of 20 million or so and taking away priority from an installed base of over a billion (if you're talking Windows in general).
The Surface Pro will run full Windows, right? What's the battery life going to be like? Because if its 6-8+ hours, I don't see why RT needs to exist.
2-4 hours, like similar ultrabooks.
Its got a full blown i5 in it, its not some little weedy medfield processor.
Ah. That's why, then. Well RT is far from perfect but it's probably the best shot by any company to create a single platform consistent among all devices.

Quick photochop, but surely someone can make a live tile like this?
You mean like, 3 buttons on 1 tile? Don't think that's possible.
You mean like, 3 buttons on 1 tile? Don't think that's possible.
Its one big tile, wich opens the power settings or something.
They're big buttons with info on them. Zero interaction aside from opening the app.
I've not used WindowsPhone, but are the tiles passive, do they only provide information with no interactivity?
I'm under the impression that you could do more than just open them.
live tiles only provide information with no interactivity. Its not like an android widget.
These tiles are causing Microsoft to be sued.

Only the interactive ones... I quite like the ones that display information.
I need some help.

I was told that you can just enter the key when installing.

Text on a square? Let's sue them.
I was told that you can just enter the key when installing.
I'm buying it from windows.microsoft.com, which means that I can't install it with a CD to what drive I'd like to choose.
Is my only option to re install windows 7 to another drive, then upgrade?
Text on a square? Let's sue them.
More on how its used. Shortcuts to applications that display live information from that application.
Is there any way to just buy a key?
Is there any way to just buy a key?
At the moment, you have to upgrade from XP SP3, Vista or 7.

Yesterday, I was told that I could upgrade from the Release Preview, then enter a valid key for 7, Vista or XP.

I was also told that he standalone version should be out soon. Probably after January.
I can deal perfectly fine with all the changes MS has made with W8. Even the Metro UI has pleasantly surprised me.
But why is shutting my system down such an arbitrarily stupid process? 7 had it perfectly. Hit start button, shut down, bam. In 8? Move your mouse to the top right, hit settings, power, shut down.
Is adding a shutdown button in the start menu so hard? Why such an unnecessarily lengthy process?
Winkey+I, power, shut down. Takes all of 3 seconds.
Do W7 ATI drivers work on W8?

I love you.
