[editline]10th November 2012[/editline] Microsoft software is incompatible with Windows. get your shit together
This happened to me. Just uninstall it and then download the latest version from the website. The one that Dark Souls installed wasn't compatible with 8.
Are there any reasons not to upgrade to Windows 8? Assuming i can handle the new start screen.
If your graphics card is "too old" to be supported properly in Windows 8.

Holy shit, I forgot how fucking stupid gfwl is.
just upgraded to windows 8 pro, great os surprisingly the new start menu hasn't bothered me at all
it didn't bother me at all but i liked the start menu from 7 so i was like "eh might as well try start8" and i love windows 8 even more
just upgraded to windows 8 pro, great os surprisingly the new start menu hasn't bothered me at all
I think I'm the only person who likes it better, once you spiffy it up with OblyTile.
just upgraded to windows 8 pro, great os surprisingly the new start menu hasn't bothered me at all
I spend so little time in it and when I do have to open it I know exactly where to click.

Today I bought a notebook with Windows 8 as I've seen you guys not complaining a lot about it. And now I have a question: how do I get gadgets to work? I can't live without some of them.

I feel like a tile that shows your CPU usage live or some other diagnostic data would be pretty slick, especially if it wasn't that god awful gadget skin they used in vista and 7.
I think I'll look for a some kind of solution, perhaps there is a third party application which makes gadgets compatible with Win8. [editline]10th November 2012[/editline] Oh, and how do I turn the hybrid boot on? Or is it enabled by default?

[editline]10th November 2012[/editline] Oh, and how do I turn the hybrid startup on? Or is it enabled by default?
Hybrid startup? You mean both the start screen and desktop? By default, it boots to the start screen, and you click on a tile to get to the desktop. There are ways to boot straight to the desktop though.
I'm talking about that half-hibernate thing which makes 8's boot faster than 7's.
my windows 8 boots up real fast compared to 7 so I guess it's default
I'm talking about that half-hibernate thing which makes 8's boot faster than 7's.
it's default, which is why you specifically need to restart after updates
I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes live-tiles with cpu-information etc. [editline]10th November 2012[/editline] If there aren't already.
I wish I could get mine looking like this, the drop shadow helps a bit. Obviously less gloss on the icons, they are a bit minging.
They have been completely removed from Windows 8. Answer: You can't.
I have gadgets working with Windows 8
Can you make it so you can have more than 2 icons on each row? Is it even possible to rearrange the icons how YOU want?

Also, I had the chance to play with ASUS's RT tablet today. Which is odd, because it's ARM-based on the Tegra-3, but it's got access to the desktop mode as well, and can run 32-64 programs. I was confused. Any explanations? Aside from that, it was snappy and responsive, and exactly what I expected when I picked up a Windows 8 tablet. In fact, it seemed to run better than some of the laptops they had there. (The touchscreen laptops are cool too, though.)
RT has a desktop mode. It still only runs apps compiled for ARM.
So there are desktop apps compiled for ARM... That's interesting. Guess that makes sense, though. My only question is this, is there a way to write and compile desktop-based ARM apps for Windows 8, or is it entirely locked down? And if it is locked down, have clever programmers cracked it yet?
I seriously think Microsoft made a really smart decision to push for Touch. I mean, look at all the new laptops and computers that are out. They are all going to move to Touch Screen, and demanding such would be a touch compatible OS. Not only can I build a PC, I can also now purchase a touch screen monitor. Now personally, this doesn't matter much to me, but to those it does apply to, it could be very useful. Thanks to Windows 8, a friendly touch compatible OS is now available to me easily. Not to mention every new laptop nowadays are moving to touch screen technologies and Windows 8 is the perfect OS to utilize this touch technology. Especially now that Windows 8 is able to be run on Tablets, I think Microsoft now has the advantage in the Tablet field. I mean, I have the classical Windows interface on my tablet. What much else can I ask for? And the Surface basically acts like a tablet laptop. I was comparing the Galaxy Tabs to the Windows tablets and I much preferred the Windows tabs ten fold over the Android ones. The operating system of Windows 8 looked so much better and felt so much smoother. Microsoft has the tablet advantage now. Therefore, not only has Microsoft secured a strong new position in the PC and laptop market, they've also made a huge stride to the lead in the tablet market, all thanks to Windows 8. I couldn't care less about Apple's retina display; if it can't be transformed into a touch-screen tablet when I want it to, I don't want their product. Apple is going to have to make changes to their OSX to make it touch friendly if they even want to consider catching up, and I honestly don't think they have a chance in the tablet market anymore with iOs while Windows 8 is able to be run on my tabs. Maybe if they make an iOsX they could have a chance again. Having the familiar desktop as part of my tablet experience is a win for me. Not to mention the Surface tablet has all the USB compatibility I want, something that Apple is pushing away from, which will possibly push away familiar customers. Android tablets, honestly, do not compare with the speed of the Windows OS. Sure; Apple and Android can boast so many apps, but when it comes down to it, I do not give a shit at all about apps. All the Apps I really need are on Windows 8, and any games I need and want can be obtained outside the Windows Store. I do not have experience with Windows Phones at all, but if tablets are to prove anything, a Windows Phone 8 phone would be very interesting to me, and could possibly be my next phone over an Android one. In short, I believe Microsoft has started a real push for touch screen computers, and have introduced a technology that can be merged with PCs, laptops, tablets, and phones (with minor changes) alike. Microsoft has started a push for better technology, technology that will define our future. Microsoft has made a leap over all the operating systems by combining a touch friendly experience with the familiarity of classic Windows. While this push for touch is inevitable, Microsoft prepared and pushed for Windows 8. While Microsoft is ready for the future, Apple and Ubuntu fall behind. People may not like the new push for touch, but it IS the future, and it IS inevitable. In ten years, everything is going to be touch. Hell, I'd say in less than 2 years, every new product will be touch compatible. Current non-touch monitors are going to be really cheap, and the touch monitors will be the new norm, costing as much as a normal monitor will now. This is our future, and I think Microsoft made an excellent decision. I feel like I should have made a mass debate thread, but oh well.
I loved it in RP but I really don't like it now
I agree with you there. In fact, I'm still using the RP until it expires in January. They took away too much of the interface and made it dead and flat.
Question about the Surface Tab; can I download Windows 8 Pro onto it over Windows RT?
