I find MSE to be quite good simply because it shuts up most of the time. May not be the best, but I'm really not all that paranoid about virusses anyway.

I'm pretty sure you can set up most AV's to be pretty much invisible until it detects something.

Viruses aren't really a problem anymore, comparing to the Windows XP times.
I haven't had a single virus since I changed from XP to 7. (I do weekly checks for malware mbam).

Yes there is. Program path to explorer.exe and the folder path in arguments iirc.
That's the "c:/explorer.exe -path/path/path" thing?
Either ways, can you show me an example?

oh shit oh shit COMODO firewall finally supports win8 without bluescreens on boot.
I am so fucking happy right now.

Shit it can even manage and edit existing tiles now.
It can add custom images for folders too :D
Thanks anyway :)
Every time my mouse doesn't move for a short while (maybe 2-4 minutes) I get this:

That's just your common sense keeping you safe.
I still get just as many windows 7 computers as I did windows XP computers for "my PC is running really slow and it says I have 3000 infections and need to buy this software for £60".
Latest one seems to be that crappy metropolitan police ransomware.

I find that Windows 7 machines can be cleaned up far easier than Windows XP. I'm nearly done after running a couple anti-malware applications, CCleaner and running Windows Update. With XP I would almost always resort to reinstalling.
I'm pretty pissed right now. Just upgraded my dad's computer to Windows 8 after it was on the RP for awhile. The monitor drivers have killed themselves and now it thinks the dual 1920x1080 monitors are a single 1024x768 display. (It duplicates the display and doesn't even detect the second monitor. ASUS doesn't help at all and only offers a manual on the website, with no options available to download drivers. Video card drivers from AMD are even worse, and you can't even open them, and it then crashes explorer.exe. The hardware is a AMD 4870 1GB and a AMD 5450 and the monitors are both VH238h, all worked completely fine before the upgrade. Both monitors are plugged into the 4870, and the 5450 is there for outputting to a TV, but it isn't plugged in right now.
Is using just windows defender enough or should I be using something else?

If you're generally responsible on the internet, it should be more than enough.
AMD dropped support for the entire 4000 and 5000 series, its a complete shitter, I had to knock my dads PC back to 7 because of his HD4890. I'll be getting him a GTX560Ti when I get some spare money.
I just fixed it by installing the 11.9 drivers. Works perfectly now.
I'm thinking about saving up for a Surface Pro Tablet over a normal laptop. What are your opinions?

I have the Radeon 4850HD, and the built in drivers are working fine for my two monitor setup.
Anyone know of some good Win8 custom themes? Start screen themes?
Also... will there be a transparent start screen anytime soon?
I was thinking about upgrading.. but Windows 8 just seems like it's more for casual consumers who watch Netflix, use Facebook, music, etc. instead of coders and people who frequent windows explorer.
Is this true? I don't know if I'd ever be able to adjust.
If you're generally responsible on the internet, it should be more than enough.
Well I really don't download anything unless it's from steam and I normally know what's safe so then I guess it's enough

I'd say Windows 8 should make no difference to your work flow, and if did, it'd probably be a positive one. It's faster, File Explorer is a bit better, and you can access way more stuff from the start screen.
I think I want to switch to Windows 8..
Are there any issues with stuff like Steam, and does it work with Tortoise SVN?
I see lots of potential for the Start Screen once people really start cracking it open. Just look at what happened with Aero with shell editors.
I want that drop shadow as well... Or vignette, or whatever it is.
I was watching a few reviews of RT and I really am now in the "what do i do" if I want to chose a tablet
Ask me anything about the Vivo Tab RT or Windows RT in general.
should I get a tablet with windows RT or should I wait for pro?
I'm considering getting the Pro Surface Tab over the RT and a laptop (see post above)

The worst part is that no antivirus will save them.
The instructions will include a "Go to your antivirus programm and disable it" line, and they will actually go to the fucking antivirus, and will fucking disable it.

No real issues with steam from my experience, and Tortoise SVN works perfectly.
Alrighty, cool.

If you want to do anything productive on the tablet. Then get the surface pro.
Im gonna get one for school to replace my macbook(because i need it at home).
Sadly i'd have to import it from the UK.
MSE isn't the best, though it catches most things and it's included with the OS. So it's not too bad, though if I was cleaning off someone's PC, I wouldn't be using MSE/Windows Defender.
lots of people before MSE never used AV's at all, so this is naturally a good improvement. It's also not like most users do things that would make using a paid AV worthwhile
I think it was just over a year ago but I made a post in this section saying how the "desktop computer" is changing to be more integrated with our other devices and everyone completely disagreed..
I know that feel bro.
I wonder how many arguments I've had with people concerning Windows 8 in Facepunch alone...
Old post from me before the new start screen was unveiled:

EDIT: Incase your curious, I click escape cause that seems natural as a way to go back
