update punkbuster for bf2 and bf2142.
I did, last time I played it was before 8 came out so maybe it's fine now.
Seriously couldn't stand using Windows 8 till I got Start8.
I use the taskbar to run programs I use frequently, the desktop for things I run sometimes, and the start screen/Metro to go to desktop or run important things like CCleaner and Steam (plus the Mail and weather apps). File-type association handles the rest for me. Metro is nothing interesting, just a dolled up start menu and it works just as well as the old one did. I don't get why people fuss so much over losing the old one.
So I spent all this time downloading cod4, only to work out punkbuster doesn't work on 8 yet.. goddamned.
Huh? I installed CoD4 a while ago on W8 and PunkBuster worked fine. Have you downloaded pbsetup.exe from their site? Because I think the one that comes with the game is outdated or something. If that doesn't work, try downloading the service installer.

Thank you so much, goddamn, the service installer fixed it!
Think pad tablet 2 comes out in the us tomorrow still no signs on prices etc in the uk however? Or an I being blind
Also I'm still on the fence about upgrading my pc to win 8 chances are I'll leave it to see if I can get along well with a tablet running win 8 before I try ob my main pc
Well yeah, it's a German company so they can't process debit cards. But I think you can use either Paypal, or a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card.
I used a debit card for my one W8 purchase but it's one of those nifty cards that can be billed as credit or debit. It still withdraws from my account either way
Quick question. With the Surface, is it possible to install games from a CD (using a USB CD adaptor)?
Quick question. With the Surface, is it possible to install games from a CD (using a USB CD adaptor)?
Not on the RT version.
managed to buy and install Windows 8 with a debit card by running it through PayPal first. not sure why it worked but whatever, i'm on Windows 8!
i made a post a while ago in here that iirc most people agreed with, about how i just didn't like Windows 8, the improvements didn't outweigh the negatives, metro was annoying and boggy etc..
now that i'm on Windows 8 i'm definitely glad i switched. native support for dual monitors with taskbars and all that is fucking killer, metro is zippy and responsive like a regular start menu and i find myself using it whenever i can just for the fun of it. it might just be because its all new and "exciting" or whatever but either way, it's not a bad thing.
installation went perfectly (used upgrade, keep files, settings apps), only issue was the new driver security settings kept me from installing my network driver so i booted into "Disable driver certificate check" mode or whatever and installed fine. but yeah all in all Windows 8 is cool. its a bit faster, i love the new explorer, there are a lot of little aesthetic changes and all in all i'm happy with the upgrade. if you're on the edge about upgrading or not, specifically if you're worrying about metro, metro is fine to use and if you really don't even have to use it.
Yes, Visa and MasterCard debit cards will work. They can communicate through the same channels as the credit cards. Other debit systems like Interac (Canada) will not.
Although, some banks in Canada are starting to offer Visa debit.

apparently not because my visa debit card didnt work till i ran it through paypal
Not on the RT version.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the Surface RT could rip music CDs, which is certainly pretty cool.

It most probably can. He was talking about programs though, but I still find RT "openess" (compared to iOS and Android, at least) quite compelling. There's a lot of restrictions on it, and it's not like they're giving out the source code, but it simply supports a lot more stuff, and just having a file browser from the get-go (my old Nokia S40 had one for god's sake) is liberating. But about that price - I can't really afford something at that price point that is not a full-fledged PC, even if it comes closer than other devices.

Yeah, there are cheaper, more powerful laptops available and that alone is not a compelling reason to get a Windows RT tab.

Battery life and tablet form factor, that's pretty much all the advantages RT has.

If I was a rich bastard, I'd get one - but then, I'd buy many things.

The lovely thing is that everyone's like "wait for the Pro" and it has none of these advantages.
It's huge by tablet standards, it's got a resolution that's too huge for a 10.6 inch screen, and why would you want an i5 in a 10.6 inch tablet? Are you telling me you're gonna try being productive on a tiny 1080p screen?

I'm not rich at all, I just have disposable income out the wazoo :v:
I actually have a very specific use in my business where the Pro tablet would fit the bill perfectly V:v:V
Up until now, choice of tablet devices that can run standard windows applications has been piss poor.

Well, I have disposable income as well, problem is that my 3-year old lappy is getting a bit crappy. It's lacking 'dem bits, the screen could use some nits, and though it's working fine, who'd want water when they could get wine?
[editline]16th November 2012[/editline]
Personally I'd love a convertible tablet - I find some apps pretty fun, but I wouldn't get a tablet that is essentially useless in other context. So a x86 tablet convertible with decent battery life is pretty much what I'd want.

Alright, so I've got an offer code to buy windows 8 for $15. If I buy it now do I have to use the new CD key they give me right away or can I wait till I get my caviar blue drive back? Also can I make an exact clone of my current HDD and then use my caviar blue or would I have to rebuy windows 8?

You can wait and install it when you get your new HDD. Yes you can make an exact clone using Norton Ghost for example. Transfering Windows installation to new HDD very easily.
Any other programs besides norton ghost that are free? cause that kinda defeats the purpose of buying windows 8 for $15 then spending another $70 to clone my HDD.
[editline]16th November 2012[/editline]
Also how many times can I reuse this key they gave me?
Any linux bootable Live CD and DD?
Also, a clean install from the ISO works with the code they give you. You just need to change a key in the registry, run a command and then reboot. It seems ridiculous that I had to do this even when in the email they send you gives you a link to enter your product key to download the ISO incase you want to "recover your computer". Yes I bought it legitimately with an upgrade from a legit XP installation.

Yeah, convertibles are cool. They'd have to be much bigger than regular tablet size though. I still haven't gotten the keyboard dock for my Vivo Tab but if it's anything like a netbook it'll be cramped and uncomfortable for serious use.

I'd be good with an ~13" version. 15" seems too big.
Hey you guys. I'm thinking about upgrading again.
How exactly will things work if I upgrade and keep files/apps? Will I still have all my steam games, music, and photos?

It actually jumped to 30% just now, I will give metro an hour or 2 but I'll probably end up using Start8.

I actually like the new start screen - You get faster access to more apps I guess.
Pin to start menu in Win7, you say? Well, you can't get as much apps on the start menu as on the start screen.
