So I got this weird bug. My input randomly locks up. First it's just weird 1 second mouse lock ups, it plays a device disconnect sound. Then it may just completely lock up. Windows is still running, but I can't use my mouse or keyboard. What's up with that? Started like 4 days ago.
I'd be good with an ~13" version. 15" seems too big.
Yeah, I'd be okay with that too. And it wouldn't be too unwieldy to use as a tablet. Platforms like the Asus Taichi just look too bulky and awkward to use as an actual tablet, but at least we're seeing some creativity.
Tried switching USB ports, still does it.
Am I the only one who wants Windows 8, but the $99 price tag is still too much? I know you can get an upgrade version for like, 15 dollars, but it isn't like a full reformat, though. Or does it?
The lovely thing is that everyone's like "wait for the Pro" and it has none of these advantages. It's huge by tablet standards, it's got a resolution that's too huge for a 10.6 inch screen, and why would you want an i5 in a 10.6 inch tablet? Are you telling me you're gonna try being productive on a tiny 1080p screen?
Battery life on the Samsung Ativ Pro is about 8 hours, runs at 1920x1080 and i barely notice it's at that high of a resolution. The start screen and all apps scale up (as it's set to display at 125% scaling) and everything looks crisp. It's a piece of shit in every other regard (and i'll be returning it this weekend), but it's given me a good idea of what to expect from the Surface Pro.

Is it possible to download the Windows 8 version that the 40 dollar upgrade version uses, and then buy a key for 40$? [editline]16th November 2012[/editline] Basically i'm going to have the money soon but I want to use it now, but buy it before the 30 day expiration period is over.

But the answer is no.
Oh wait, isn't the release preview open until January?
Oh wait, isn't the release preview open until January?
It won't expire until January, but the site to download it is gone. And I think you still need a key from XP, Vista or 7
I downloaded it a long time ago, i've got an ISO and a key that was provided. I doubt the RP gets any updates like the release version does?
I downloaded it a long time ago, i've got an ISO and a key that was provided. I doubt the RP gets any updates like the release version does?
It does, actually. I'm still using it and getting updates. although it seems to not let you install certain apps like Minesweeper
Can you be a little more in depth on what you mean by certain apps? Like what else can you not install?
Can you be a little more in depth on what you mean by certain apps? Like what else can you not install?
I dunno. that's the only "app" I've ever tried to install and it didn't show up on my Windows Store. I mostly use programs, not "apps"
I just tried to install it using the key provided by Microsoft when it was first released, but it didn't work.
oh good i cant use windows 8 because my key exhausted all its uses [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] what a waste of money that was
oh good i cant use windows 8 because my key exhausted all its uses [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] what a waste of money that was
Call Microsoft. You go through an automated process that takes like 2-3 minutes and you can activate it again. Just make sure it's installed on only one computer.

I used the ISO I got from upgrading my home computer. You need to stick a .cfg file on the CD though so you can skip the key entry screen, after that it will run in evaluation mode which doesn't allow you to personalise certain things. You can then activate it down the line with the £25 key if you do the registry hack and command trick that's floating around the net so the "upgrade" key works on a fresh install.
Nice, my Windows 8 crashes with a "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" BSOD when I pull out a USB stick. How is a USB stick that I put in after booting a boot device? :v:
probably because the partition on the USB stick has a boot flag. But this shouldn't generate a bluescreen.
It does indeed have a boot flag, but it should not be loaded as boot device after the OS is actually booted. That's silly.
It does indeed have a boot flag, but it should not be loaded as boot device after the OS is actually booted. That's silly.
I have seen many silly things in an OS.
For the Release Preview, can't you use a valid Windows 7 Professional key to use it? (And if you can, does it actually take a usage away from my Windows 7 key?)
Call Microsoft. You go through an automated process that takes like 2-3 minutes and you can activate it again. I've had a copy of Microsoft Office 2010 in a VM, that I've since trashed and reinstalled (I go through a Windows VM regularly, it's kind of weird) which only has two uses at once. So I'm over the limit.
The lack of customization in the Metro UI is really annoying.
The lack of customization in the Metro UI is really annoying.
thats because metro is ~minimalistic~
The lack of customization in the Metro UI is really annoying.
All we need is the ability to add our own Metro background and making our own custom tiles without the use of Oblytile. Windows 8 will be, in my opinion, perfect after that. I can only hope they add it in a future update.

Sure, it's not in the vanilla... But it never will be, knowing Microsoft.
