Stardock's Decor8 does exactly what you're requesting.
And it's only $5. Sure, it's not in the vanilla... But it never will be, knowing Microsoft.
Only?! Oh please, something as simple as that should be free!
And it will, I'm pretty sure other people will make free tools for anything stardock makes you pay.
I hope EA or Valve releases a native app for Windows 8. I know Valve wouldn't do it but maybe Ea could start and start releasing games compatible with RT.
I know Civ V is compatible with Windows 8 now and that would be a great game to have on RT.
Doesn't matter to me though, I'll be getting a pro tab.
Just bought a Asus Vivobook x202e! Really smooth with windows 8. Anyone else have it?

RT is for ARM only and will never run Civ V
so i still can't click links in a lot of programs
i don't know if it's an issue with chrome or with windows 8, but it's pretty fucking annoying
for example the planetside 2 launcher, the guild wars 2 launcher, teamspeak etc
whenever i try to click a link nothing happens

Well, yes, it is stupid, but it's currently the only program that gets around some of the weird limits in the OS. Unless you'd care to post another link, then there's not much that can be done, right?
Hopefully I am getting the 40$ upgrade later this month.
Is there any real reason to get an RT Tablet? They just seem so useless to me compared to an iPad/Android/Surface Pro tablet.
Is there any real reason to get an RT Tablet? They just seem so useless to me compared to an iPad/Android/Surface Pro tablet.
Well the way I see it, if you're saying the RT is bad compared to the iPad and Android tablets, you're missing on the things that RT does well. The app ecosystem is steadily growing, there have been 300 games added in the past week alone, so that's not a truly valid point. Out of the box all three types of tablets are relatively equal in what they can accomplish, so there's really no advantage to getting an iPad over either of its competitors unless you like the software better.
Now, the biggest difference between X86 windows tabs and ARM windows tabs are obviously what apps it can run. I staunchly believe that if you want to get something like the Surface Pro because you can run desktop apps on it, you're stupid. I don't care if it has an i5, not only is the tablet gigantic compared to its ARM (and Clover Trail) equivalents, the screen size is terribly small for what everyone else uses higher-end CPUs for. I personally wouldn't want to try gaming or running Photoshop on a 10.6 inch screen, it's the exact reason I never got a netbook. I just feel like, even if it runs full-blown Windows, tablets like the Surface Pro lose sight about what a tablet is supposed to be. It tries to bridge the gap between a tablet and a laptop with, really, the advantages of neither.
If you really can't justify getting a Windows RT tablet, don't kid yourself on the i5 ones. Get a Clover Trail one. Battery life is comparable to ARM, you can still install your desktop apps, and the price isn't twice that of a comparable laptop.
I want to get the pro tab just because I would look like a fucking champ plus it would serve as my college laptop that can run sibelius and shit, and still be able to play my games.

I personally don't think it's gonna happen. Also that article is shitting so much at the new start screen, makes it out to be much worse than it actually is.

Noticed that I hardly use it anyway, and as it stands now, I even have a decent book reader program, something I couldn't get before, same goes for some other handy programs.
All-in-all, an improvement. Except for search, I'd love to see that done differently.

after getting windows 8 I really see no point in the classical start menu. I never used it, so taking it out is nice.
Windows 8 requirements

60?! Are you insane? More like 25fps max

I see one point, that is to use the old documents, pictures etc menu. That's the only reason why I have start8
I gotta say, the weather app is quite nice. 5 day forecast, 24 hour forecast, weather alerts on the lock screen, 12 weather maps, historical highs and lows.

A couple of days ago, it said my weather was smoke. I didn't think that was a type of weather personally.
Apart from that, no complaints.

I used to live in an area with lots of wildfires all summer, so yeah. Smoke is definitely a type of weather.
Is there any way to get windows 8 for 15 dollars like some people were posting awhile ago? I'm interested in upgrading but would obviously rather shell out 15 dollars than 40, though if I can't get it for the 15 (because I read that the only way to do so was by buying a PC with windows 7 on it and you can upgrade for really cheap) I'll have to get it for 40.
MS fixed the exploit. AFAIK you have to give them a legit key bought recently.

Maybe they are going to add the traditional start menu in a service pack, to appeal to the enterprise audience.

It's not coming back. Julie Larson-Green was also in charge of the new start screen and the decision to remove the start menu, and now she's head of the Windows team.
It's not going to happen and that article was full of shit. You don't have to hit "Windows + Q" to find a program, just hit the windows key and start typing, you know, what people have done for the past two versions of windows?

I know that. but Windows8 doesn't really appeal to the enterprise audience, because of the "new interface", and other design decisions. It would cost a lot of money to school the workers, who have only have been using WindowsXP since it came out.
I have talked with several people in other IT departements regarding the use of windows8 on an enterprise level, and most responses are that they can't see it being used in a productive environment.
Leave metro alone and add transparency to the windows borders and maybe also add transparency to metro.

Honestly, I didn't mind shelling out the $5 for Stardock's Start8. It works perfectly, looks nice, and even took my previous data from Win7 and applied it to the start menu.
While it would be nice for Microsoft to re-add it. There are plenty of alternatives for those who want it back.
Well, I just installed Windows 8, and none of the Metro apps are launching. Any idea why?
I hope Gabe ends up changing his mind about Windows 8 like he did with the PS3. How could would it be to pin games from the Steam library and have live tiles with your stats for that game? Something similar to the XBOX -

Highly unlikely.
Currently live tiles, are restricted to metro applications, which are restricted to the app store.
And I don't think Microsoft would make an exception.
well thats dumb
