Yup that's windows 8.
A faster more secure windows 7 where the start menu has been replaced with a full tablet OS.
I'm going to stick with Windows 7 after using 8 for almost a month. Windows 7 just works, and I don't have to use an interface designed for tablets.
Not to mention program and driver compatibility.

What programs and drivers did you have trouble with?
So I heard microsoft security essentials is installed in windows 8 (or some kind of). Use it or install something else?
Use it

Ctrl + Escape also serves as the Windows key for keyboards without a dedicated Windows key.
Would I be wasting my time writing a metro app for steam chat or would anyone be interested in such a thing?
Benefits for non-ARM platforms would include nice metro notifications and much lower background cpu usage than Steam itself
Is there a way to switch quickly between my browser and skype/aim shit like that and make the taskbar permanately appear?
I hate having to be browsing on chrome, then a I get a message and I have to move my mouse all the way to the corner and click on desktop since there's no taskbar

If you refuse to use chrome in desktop mode, win+tab shifts between metro apps, or a metro app and the desktop.
Else, follow the postes' advice above.
thank you!, still a bit lost on windows 8
Well apparently Microsoft would have to refund both Windows 8 Pro and the backup DVD and they don't want to do that.
They can't just refund the DVD that was wrecked during shipping or send me a new one. So basically I get nothing but a wrecked DVD.

Why did you even order one in the first place?
Three words: burn your own.

You know you can download the Windows 8 image and burn it right? Microsoft seriously doesn't care if download a retail ISO. Only if you use cracks and shit.

I did burn my own DVD when I purchased it.
Plus I like having official media on the side.
This isn't specific to Windows 8, but I just learned something I can't believe I never knew.
If you hold shift and then right-click a folder (or right-click within it), you get an option to "open command prompt at this path".
All the copy pasting I've done.....
Uhh, I think I've seen someone make 2 blocks wide custom tiles earlier ... Is that really possible? It's currently not with OblyTile, right?
"ALT + Print Screen" too, so damn handy, no more cropping in GIMP required!
Or just use snipping tool.

Probably custom tile maker from the store, it's just that it won't open programs, it's used to add images only, unless they recently changed that.
Or just use snipping tool.
that's more tedious. You literally only have to do like three steps using ctrl + printscreen, but with snipping it's like 5.

Also when you want to save as a file?
I generally don't need to. imgur can upload from your clipboard.
hey, that's pretty useful. THanks!
Yeah, or just use puush
What became of the "printscreen saves your image to a location"? I remember it working some time back.
Um, can you disable so you don't open applications/programs in administrator mode all the time? It fucks up some programs for some reason.

on my bro's computer it isn't default, but on mine it is. Weird?

usually you run applications without elevated privileges.
I use shareX pointed to my Google account, images get uploaded to a private google+ album. You have infinite (photo and video) storage in google+, and images can be up to 2048px in any direction, up to 3-5MB. GIFs work too. The integration with the right-click -> sent to option is the icing on the cake, just right click a file and send to shareX and paste 5 seconds later.
I've filled mine up and I can't be arsed to pay for more.
you can delete
It's a long shot, but does anyone have a spare promo key lying around anywhere? Apparently Microshaft are being tight on the whole multiple computer licensing (for personal computers).
"ALT + Print Screen" too, so damn handy, no more cropping in GIMP required!
I use this little neat tool for window screenshots:
http://sharpmindprojects.com/project/upscreen/
it basically lets you either drag to desired area, click a window to make a screenshot of that window or right click and select fullscreen, and then it automatically uploads it to your FTP server and puts a link to the image in the clipboard. Superhandy for screenshot sharing on forums.
