Only if you don't mind having a non-retina display. I've heard if you're used to the huge pixel density, the iPad mini's a bit staggering.
probably be best to wait for the iPad mini 2 perhaps
I've started noticing this on my desktop. When I turn it off, everything goes fine. Keyboard lights turn off, monitor goes into sleep mode, the works. Except for one thing. My PC hardware is 'working' for a second or 3 before it actually turns off. Anyone else having this?
because the new shutdown is like hibernation-lite
Just you, except for the volume issue. Right click the volume icon, click playback devices, go to the communication tab (or whatever, the last one on the right) and click the "do nothing" option.
did this but still nothing. The only solution is restarting Steam which means it'll spend 20 minutes "updating". I've already deleted registry and appupdate blobs thousands of times.
Steam's not a well-performing program in the first place.
because the new shutdown is like hibernation-lite
Methinks it would be an easy thing to test if thats it, if there is a way to do a shutdown without hibernating the OS from tge command prompt. [editline]30th November 2012[/editline] And my Galaxy Nexus is a Mac now. I guess. :v:
Is it still possible to install release preview, then upgrade to Windows 8? [editline]1st December 2012[/editline] I just don't want to have to deal with installing something older, but I suppose I can just throw 7 on the box then upgrade.
yes
Well what do you want in a tablet? If you just want something to sit down and browse the web with, the iPad is for you. If you want to do more than sit and browse the web, like maybe do some homework on it, tablets aren't for you. I'd advise against Android solely because even though I firmly believe Android is a stronger tablet OS, none of the developers really care about making a worthwhile tablet UI for their apps. RT can be considered a miss if you care about apps at all, wait until it matures a bit (though heavy hitters like Hulu and Netflix already have apps and they work wonderfully.) The Nexus 10 isn't a great choice because the Mali T604 is a horrid GPU compared to the SGSwhatever of the new 4th gen iPad, especially at the resolution it's trying to drive, and we all should know that Android in comparison to iOS is a little less snappy, and the inappropriate hardware manufacturers keep putting in Android devices really fucks the ecosystem up. If you really don't want an iPad though you're looking for a tablet at the wrong time.
I have a nexus and the performance of rendering websites is better than on my i5 laptop with windows8 and the slowdown is probably caused by my HDD. But I have no problems browsing sites on either. I agree that the free app market on google play is a bit lacking since it mostly consists of demo versions of paid programs but you can enable the device to install apps from other websites if you want to so there's some hope. The things that I would really consider as drawbacks on nexus is maybe the fact that it has no microSD slot which doesn't matter to me because I don't store the files on the device. The other one is that the screen is too bright at its lowest setting which is very annoying at night and it makes the battery last for around 9 hours when it could probably last longer. To give the other guy some solid advice, if you want a tablet to be productive then buy some paper, it has no battery problems, it has the lowest thickness, if you drop it it doesn't break and you can even make planes with it (and I'm not talking about designing one on it)!
Steam's not a well-performing program in the first place.
Steam sucks, but it's the best of its kind.
Windows just tried to update and now it won't boot up anymore, the screen stays on black and goes on and off after the windows logo. Any way of getting into safe mode now?
Windows just tried to update and now it won't boot up anymore, the screen stays on black and goes on and off after the windows logo. Any way of getting into safe mode now?
Are you using a NVIDIA card?
Windows just tried to update and now it won't boot up anymore, the screen stays on black and goes on and off after the windows logo. Any way of getting into safe mode now?
I had the same problem after a Windows Server 2008 compatibility update of some sort. I fixed it by restarting around 2 times while the windows load screen was visible so it would launch the startup repair. Thankfully I forgot to disable System Restore and it managed to restore it. I simply ignored the update for a while, then the next Tuesday it automatically updated and surprisingly booted up fine.
Steam's not a well-performing program in the first place.
When steam loads up with my computer, it is so slow and locks up all the time, it takes 10 minutes for it to actually function correctly and not freeze
I want to change my motherboard on my main work PC that I used the Windows 8 Pro upgrade code on. What are the licensing implications? Is the key an OEM or retail key? It was upgraded from a retail windows 7 installation so if it's an OEM key I'll be a bit annoyed but I'm sure a phone call to Microsoft will sort it.
In the end I chose to reinstall Windows, thanks for offering assistance but I already tried a few things and safe to say, they only made things worse. On the plus side, most programs I installed on another partition still worked so I won't have to start from nothing.
Windows just tried to update and now it won't boot up anymore, the screen stays on black and goes on and off after the windows logo. Any way of getting into safe mode now?
That same thing happened to me twice, I'm back on 7 because of it.
That same thing happened to me twice, I'm back on 7 because of it.
I'm thinking about three things that could be the cause, Ultrauxthemepatcher, Oblytile or that new way of shutting down and boot up, fast boot or something it's called. Turned off fast boot for now, and I won't be using Oblytile again, as for the theme patcher.. well I'll probably turn away from Windows 8 if I can't change anything to it, default just isn't my thing, you can't even use a darker style because the text is plain black. Could you share if you had any of these in common at the time, it would have to happen right after the update for it to be exactly the same.
When steam loads up with my computer, it is so slow and locks up all the time, it takes 10 minutes for it to actually function correctly and not freeze
It's browser is atrocious as well, and it's really, really slow switching tabs and loading new store pages. I've actually taken to just buying shit through Chrome since it's that much faster.

Under Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings.
Im just trying out a linux OS right now. And I have to say the font rednering is amazing! Anyone know how to get the linux mint font rendering on windows 8?
I've played around with a few programs that emulate OSX's font rendering. It breaks so much shit I'd rather put up with Windows' terribad rendering.
Last time I tried such thing it wouldn't let me use my Nvidia optimus stuff. so basically intel GPU for everything.
Strangely I'm the other way round, I can't stand the font rendering engine used in most Linux distributions, I find it painful to read and always end up hacking it to pieces to look as close to windows' fonts as possible. I like crisp fonts.

I've tried the os x font rendering too, but the AA is terrible /opinions

Granted it's not as sharp as cleartype but it's unlike those programs people use to adjust the font rendering in Windows which to me almost always ends in a headache.

If I could have cleartype in a Linux distribution I probably would have ditched windows on my work (Programming) machine, but code just looks horrid and blurry to me :(
something about having bars at the top of the screen is so unappealing to me.
It really bothers me when people say they aren't upgrading to Windows 8 because of the start menu. I don't think people understand that the new start menu is generally easier and searches much faster. And if that's just opinion, I want them to ask themselves how much time they spend using the start menu. It's a start menu. You start things from it. You use it for a whole 10 seconds, if that.
