It really bothers me when people say they aren't upgrading to Windows 8 because of the start menu. I don't think people understand that the new start menu is generally easier and searches much faster. And if that's just opinion, I want them to ask themselves how much time they spend using the start menu. It's a start menu. You start things from it. You use it for a whole 10 seconds, if that.
It takes up the whole screen and, for me, that's very inconvenient.
something about having bars at the top of the screen is so unappealing to me.
You do get used to it. I'm using Unity on mine, so it's kind of like Window's menu, but I have mine hide till I put my mouse over the left side of the screen. The global menus are hard to get used to...
It takes up the whole screen and, for me, that's very inconvenient.
Question: How?
That one looks even better than linux mint :O
They use the same font rendering.
Question: How?
That's exactly what I'm saying, I just press the start button and start typing in the program I want, or click on the Weather tile. Boom, done.
If I could have cleartype in a Linux distribution I probably would have ditched windows on my work (Programming) machine, but code just looks horrid and blurry to me :(
What do you mean by blurry? you could always try out the Infinality freetype patches, they are rather godly [editline]2nd December 2012[/editline]
something about having bars at the top of the screen is so unappealing to me.
Ubuntu doesn't even look like that anymore (by standard)
I still don't understand why though - you're just launching things from it
It doesn't need to take up the whole screen. Also, you lose the shortcuts to your personal folders.
It doesn't need to take up the whole screen. Also, you lose the shortcuts to your personal folders.
You can make shortcuts to those folders.
You can make shortcuts to those folders.
Doesn't matter, I'm too used to using Start>personal folder.
Doesn't matter, I'm too used to using Start>personal folder.
I'm sorry to hear that?
I'm sorry to hear that?
Me too.
So all in all, this is your fault. It's not Windows 8.
Doesn't matter, I'm too used to using Start>personal folder.
So pin them to right click on Windows Explorer, eliminates the need for the start menu.
Doesn't matter, I'm too used to using Start>personal folder.
Pin it to the taskbar, or get used to the start screen. It may take a bit but soon enough you'll be winkeying and clicking a personal folder without thinking it once you pin it to the start screen and use it a bit. We all got used to the 2 column start menu when it was first introduced in XP, so we can all get used to it on the start menu as well.

This reduces the amount of completely frivolous complaints. Thanks.
I just caved into the upgrade $40 deal. I plan on burning the ISO to a DVD and doing a clean install. But I'm worried about one thing: is the download 64-bit?
Welp, it turns out my Bluetooth adapter doesn't work in Windows 8. I can pair, but I can't make any connections. And I can't install the actual Broadcom ones because apparently the generic ones are newer (except they don't fucking work). Uninstalling the adapter breaks Bluetooth services in Windows so badly that the only way to fix it is a System Restore (I get a access is denied error trying to reinstall them?). And my problem is apparently way too specific because I can't find shit on Google, and all the solutions say update your drivers. HOW DO I UPDATE THE DRIVER, IF THE INSTALLER WON'T LET ME?? God. Damn. What the fuck. They were just fine out of the box in Windows 7. Well, that was 2 hours I will never get back.
I'm thinking about three things that could be the cause, Ultrauxthemepatcher, Oblytile or that new way of shutting down and boot up, fast boot or something it's called. Turned off fast boot for now, and I won't be using Oblytile again, as for the theme patcher.. well I'll probably turn away from Windows 8 if I can't change anything to it, default just isn't my thing, you can't even use a darker style because the text is plain black. Could you share if you had any of these in common at the time, it would have to happen right after the update for it to be exactly the same.
I had both Oblytile and the uxtheme patcher and it died after the update. It was probably the theme patcher.

Or something related to theming. While trying to get theming working in 8 I had that black screen about every test I tried. Finally made progress and don't have it so long as I'm ultra careful, but still put me off.
I doubt I'll end up paying for it after the trial, but I think I could get used to this:
It would be nice if you could setup your own background for the start menu.
If you're going to complain about the start menu, please make sure you're actually using the start menu beforehand. This reduces the amount of completely frivolous complaints. Thanks.
I have used Windows 8 on my home computer.
But I have used Windows 8??
Use it more until you like it :v: I don't hate the new startscreen, but I don't really like the lack of customisation about it. Was expecting the ability to use a custom background.
One thing that I see as misleading with Windows 8 is that if you're using a microsoft account to log in, it tells you your password is wrong if you don't have internet access. This happens to me when I wake my computer from sleep. The first time I enter my password it always says it wrong even though I'm 100% sure I typed it correct. The second time it works, though.
Does anyone have a link to a start screen background changer?
Whats the advantage of logging in using a microsoft account?
Whats the advantage of logging in using a microsoft account?
Syncing of personalization settings between computers, and auto login to MS apps like SkyDrive.
