Question, if Windows 8 is pretty fast to begin with, how do you think it would perform with an SSD?
... faster? I honestly can't say since I've used an SSD from the start. But, faster. Faster.
So, I'm running a somewhat old desktop by now, but it's holding up good, and I just upgraded the GPU. It freezes sometimes though, and I think the new bottleneck might be the memory. So, instead of buying more and larger RAM, I've been thinking about upgrading to 8 (currently running Vista), as it is better optimised. Just wanted to ask you guys if I'm right in thinking that it would be a good idea.

10 second boot time for me.
10 second boot time for me.
Holy shit.
Why has windows booted so slowly for me in the past? The last time I checked before going to Linux my windows 7 install took 3-5 minutes to get me to a usable desktop while systemd currently reports 8523ms for startup in Arch. I'm interested to see how quickly the boot times deteriorate without reinstall/"refresh" in windows 8. If they remain fast, I'll finally have something positive to say about windows 8.
I'm trying to see if my university is offering a student discount on Windows 8 yet. If they are, I'll probably pick it up. If not, then I'll hold off.

I think I'm at 8 seconds if I exclude the time that my UEFI intentionally gives me to allow me to enter the boot settings if I want to.
Some motherboards give you the option for a quicker boot in the BIOS by skipping stuff like checking multiple boot devices etc

I don't want it much faster, because then I wouldn't have enough time to actually enter the UEFI before it started booting. I'm totally content at the current boot speed.
10 second boot time for me.
Up to 20 seconds for me. It isn't that much, really.
From pressing the power button to seeing the desktop in about 25 seconds (including hitting enter at the dual boot menu and entering password at login)
I don't know why microsoft didn't pick up on that earlier, even the worst of the worst linux distributions have virtual desktops
Funnily enough Windows used to have virtual desktops, only during the early Vista alpha days. Then it was removed.

The combination of Aero snap and multiple desktops would be a match made in heaven.
I wish you could use Windows 8 hot corners with aero snap. That would be useful
How are you people adapting to metro? (those of you that chose to stick with it and use it).
I use it most of the time.
It feels like a bit less hassle to use than the desktop when all you're doing is browsing the internet, checking your mail or anything like that. It just feels more comfortable. Of course whenever I'm actually being productive or playing a video game then it's desktop all the way.
is it me or did my hot corners kind of break
i used to be able to drag an app out of the switcher just by putting my mouse in the upper left corner, now i need to fully open it to do that
or is it some weird multi-monitor behavior
Damn, i just bought windows 8 and i can't install it on my 60 GB SSD because windows 7 takes up the entire SSD. So now i've bought windows 8 for nothing.
I got a touch screen monitor for Christmas to use with Windows 8 and I have to say it doesn't help the transition between the desktop and the start menu. If the monitor didn't have such a thick bezel it probably wouldn't be a problem, I think. Besides having difficulty opening the side menus, every part of Windows seems to handle the touch inputs fantastically (not including third party programs, but Chrome has been working excellently). What I really need now is a wall mount to be able to move my monitor up, down, and forwards and back. I have to put it right in front of me to not strain my arm using the screen so I've devised some system of moving my monitor back and forth when I need to use my desk.

That's something you could have checked before buying. but you can always install it another time.
That's something you could have checked before buying. but you can always install it another time.
Well i thought it would remove the old windows installation first, because it is the windows installation that takes up so much space.

You surely have a USB laying around? Just install from that.
You surely have a USB laying around? Just install from that.
Isn't there any way i can install without keeping the windows folder? I have 12,2 GB left free space, that is the absolute minimum i can get without removing windows files.

i'm pretty sure you can format the ssd when installing windows 8.
Copy the things you care about over to another drive or something, then just format the SSD.
Still having this problem:

Anyone know how to fix it?
So I saw a Microsoft booth at the mall today and went over to look at the new Surface tablet they have. Apparently the desktop icon was in a smaller tile than I'm used to and being unable to spot it out, I got scared thinking they had disabled it or something. I asked this ~60 year old guy at the booth if you could still get to the desktop, only for him to say "Mannnnn that's oldschool! It's all about tiles now man..". I just gave him a forced chuckle and then he proceeded to click on the app for me..

new page bump
so Windows 8 doesn't require 360 controller drivers to be installed right?
Anything to download?

Just plug the sucker in, Windows installs the driver automatically.
