android tablets have shitty apps and ipad is too limited for me stop being an ass, windows rt tablets are okay
You can jailbreak the iPad to pretty much remove all barriers, someone even made it so that you can put the apps in "windows" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q_DvfOOeJE
i'm kind of liking the lenovo yoga thingy, it has sweet battery life [editline]24th January 2013[/editline]
You can jailbreak the iPad to pretty much remove all barriers, someone even made it so that you can put the apps in "windows" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q_DvfOOeJE
usb connectivity is limited, you can only use a second display in mirror mode, printer support is almost missing [editline]24th January 2013[/editline] and it doesn't have proper file managing [editline]24th January 2013[/editline] basically i love rt because it's based on a desktop os and you can do some things you'd do on a pc and it's still portable and has great battery lifee [editline]24th January 2013[/editline] and that quasar thing looks really fucking awkward to use with fingers samsung's multiwindow thing and windows 8/rt's snap mode are much better for fingers
if you want a tablet, get an ipad or an android tablet, not this failed marketing, half-baked crap
I honestly think you're just making it out to be worse than it actually is. You might find it useless because it's a traditional tablet. It's not made for work - it's made for fun and games. To entice people to buy it, they stuck Office RT on it to make it stick out from an iPad or Android tablet. But down at the core, it's just a tablet with a desktop whose sole (useful) purpose is holding files for Office RT. I personally find nothing wrong with RT tablets - they fulfill their purpose - web browsing and media consumption. If you expect any more out of it, well, you're stupid. Buy an x86 tablet if you want to do actual work - they make them with 10 hours of battery life and slim, just like the RT tablets.
Android tablets are slow chunks of shit. Any tab that has 8 pro on it is automatically better.
Good luck browsing the Internet on a slow-ass Tegra 3 trying to power full-fledged windows on top of it. I'm not saying Windows RT itself is flawed; rather, the current hardware implementations are horrid for what they want it to do and honestly it's a schizophrenic OS. Just please nobody buy a surface. Wait for something better to come along, you'll be much happier in the long run.
but its so fucking slow, it takes forever to get stuff done.
lol
The one good thing is excellent flash implementation, but it's limited to specific sites.
I've got an iPad. Does that make me better than Surface owners?
if you want a tablet, get an ipad or an android tablet, not this failed marketing, half-baked crap
How does marketing even have anything to do with the quality of a product? That said, I'd get a Nexus 7/10, but that's just me.
I didn't say marketing made it shitty, rather that the marketing makes it look better than it really is. [editline]24th January 2013[/editline]
android tablets have shitty apps and ipad is too limited for me stop being an ass, windows rt tablets are okay
wait lmao what WinRT is very limited in the same way the ipad is
Android may not stutter and lag as much as it used to, but its so fucking slow, it takes forever to get stuff done.
not really Define 'getting stuff done' because my teg3 tablet rarely ever slips up [editline]25th January 2013[/editline]
Push a button on an iOS device, the OS responds and does whatever the shit you just told it to. Push a button on a WP device, the OS responds and does whatever the shit you just told it to. Push a button on an Android device, the OS hangs and has a good think about what you just asked it to do, then it ~might~ consider doing it (smoothly I might add, because of course Android doesn't lag anymore!) Go ahead, try pushing the menu button on Android, it takes a good half a second before it even starts to pop the menu up.
talk about exaggeration huh nice bubble you have there [editline]25th January 2013[/editline]
I didn't say marketing made it shitty, rather that the marketing makes it look better than it really is. WinRT and iOS are both extremely locked down
b-but it has a desktop that means it's more open!
i mean I guess there's filesystem manipulation and all those lovely settings but if it's a tablet and it's purpose is browsing and apps then why do you care about having the filesystem??
I didn't say it doesn't have those facilities, you tool It's still locked down whichever way you look at it, an awful pathway.
I didn't say it doesn't have those facilities, you tool It's still locked down whichever way you look at it, an awful pathway.
oh I know I was just saying like between code integrity and having the same sort of app system as pretty much every tablet, it's far from open, and I would argue if you want the open stuff then, y'know, buy a laptop or other X86 device
oh I know I was just saying like between code integrity and having the same sort of app system as pretty much every tablet, it's far from open, and I would argue if you want the open stuff then, y'know, buy a laptop or other X86 device
Or I could just go with my android device, which is as free as it could be. [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] There isn't much point in arguing for 100% open devices because it's very very hard to achieve
honestly though, I wish I bought a chromebook or something else than my Vivo Tab. I mean, things I do like about the Vivo Tab are battery life and it's got an amazing display, but I just don't feel I'm getting anywhere near my $500 bucks worth, especially when it never separates from its keyboard dock so I just use it literally as a netbook - and $500 is a lot for a netbook that doesn't run any desktop apps
Just please nobody buy a surface. Wait for something better to come along, you'll be much happier in the long run.
RT, yes, this times a million. It's pretty slow and you're better off buying an Atom tablet OR Surface Pro.

All I know is that it's based off Linux so it has some possibility of running certain Linux apps

My Android phone is slow, but doesn't have lag like that.
no that was a specific bug with the verge and the Android browser - had nothing to do with the browser being shit
you get file system access and it comes with everything a normal windows 8 comes with not all people need that shit but i do and i don't want to have no battery life at all because i wanted a good file manager [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] rt is still less locked down you can sideload metro apps not to mention that there's a jailbreak [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] i have a nexus 7 and i don't want to touch android tablets ever again [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] this is what android keeps doing after all this time and after all these hardware improvements
That's what android will keep doing if you buy one of the hopelessly underpowered tablets (pretty much all of them so far) and expect it to run responsively. As far as I can tell, there's a few groups of users here: • The ones who don't know or care about hardware and just know that Android feels sluggish • The ones who know the hardware and avoid slow parts and high-res because they know what to expect • The ones who know the hardware but are willing to install modified kernels and other software to improve the experience compared to competitors, Android remains the most "unresponsive" mainstream mobile OS. And if you bought an Android something without knowing what to expect, especially if you don't want to perform modifications, then yeah, there's nothing more to be said. I have a friend with a Nexus 7 and it was fast enough for my tastes - yeah not silky smooth like my heavily tweaked Nexus 4 (linaro -O3 kernel and ROM, ROM tweaked with user-made improvements on project butter, kernel tuned to be quicker to jump to higher frequencies and stay there longer as well as other kernel system tweaks, though none of these are necessary), though certainly not painfully slow, at least to both him and I. But if it really bugs you to the point of completely avoiding Android tablets, then that's your choice. I'll give it to you, the out of box experience for most android tablets is pretty weak. Hopefully Google can keep it up with the optimization and the vendors can keep it up with the GPU upgrades.

I'd just like to say I haven't had any issues with my iPad...
i've said it before and I'll say it again, you clearly don't want a tablet, you want ultraportable windows RT is a poor choice of OS especially considering CT tablets are here
what about battery life, that's my big issue
eh that's on a device per device basis. surface is OK, ipad beats it by a tickle if I remember correctly. [editline]24th January 2013[/editline] and yes, I just used tickle as a unit.
The iPad Mini's got an eight hour battery life, about 5 hours on games and 6 on videos. It's also a rock solid tablet, although it does get a bit of wear around the edges after a while.
I was very happy with the size they picked when I used one of the store models at best buy. seemed like a great size if you just want to forget you have it altogether. though it's a bit of a different niche than the Windows tablets are.

I mean I can't tell you what to do with your money, if you end up happy with your decision then I'm happy for you too. I'm just letting you know what I think of it considering I own a RT tablet.
