So I 'upgraded' yesterday from Win7 after I'd been getting a lot of .NET related problems, had the day to get around it and I do like it, I'm using start8 because, why not, start-up is noticeably faster, it's a little sleeker, I'm liking the new shortcuts, the UI formerly known as Metro is pretty but fairly useless unless you just want a pretty experience, slows things down for desktop use, but the mail and weather applications can be useful, I doubt I'll use Metro other than a few apps or for shortcuts though.
What I don't like are the idle window's white colour and the taskbar icon's white colour, anyone know if I can change this?
how does start8 make startup noticeably faster? and please give metro a chance before saying 'OH THIS IS DIFFERENT FUCK THIS' and installing some third party bullshit
how does start8 make startup noticeably faster? and please give metro a chance before saying 'OH THIS IS DIFFERENT FUCK THIS' and installing some third party bullshit
I didn't like the start menu because of the ugly icons, I used oblytile to change them and it looked alright... also didn't like the 'metro' apps at all, but that's a given since it was made for touch screens other than that I liked windows 8 but I went for a start button because it's less of a hassle... but since then I have reverted back to windows 7 not because one is better than the other but, just because.
Honeslty the only reason im using windows 8 is cause i get the pro version for free from microsoft dreamspark. I would have never got it if it cost me anything.

I agree. As of yet, I haven't seen any features that make me go "wow, this would have definitely been worth some cash over sticking with Win7". Heck, the only reason I went ahead and installed it was because I was reinstalling Windows anyway to my SSD.
Although the Start search feels a lot faster, compared to Win7. That might be just because I have an SSD now though.

This is the same reason for me, I paid £15 for 8 because I was due for a format, but I've gone back to 7 now because I just randomly started having problems with my USB ports randomly working and not but I think I will just wait till service pack 1 for 8 before I go back or just see where it goes, at least I have a CD Key and I don't hate the OS, I just wanted to see if 7 has fixed my issues and so far so good..

Microsoft doesn't do service packs anymore.
I have a question about office, can I re-install it if i re-install windows? I've seen and heard that once you buy it, it's bound to your pc.
[editline]17th February 2013[/editline]
That is, not the 365 version but the student version.

Yes you can. When I reinstalled Windows for a friend, I also reused his Office 2010 key. It went through the verification process without complaining. Worst case, you call Microsoft, and go through the authentication process manually.
No, I know office 2010 will do it, i mean the not subscription based 2013 version.

Coming from a person who has a HDD from ~2007, it is much faster.

So they will just release single updates through windows update? Like 7?
I bought Windows 8 for $15, and while I will admit it's not quite that great an upgrade from Windows 7, it's a fair bit cheaper than buying another copy of Windows 7 for my laptop for college. I can now install the old Windows 7 I had on my desktop on my laptop, and I save $85. Not bad, right?
Has anyone noticed (excuse me if this has been mentioned already, I'm not reading through 216 pages) that if you leave windows 8 for long enough without updating (where it gives you X days in advance before it restarts your computer) it cripples your computer to the point where you can't run .msi files, and some .exe files? It got to the point where I couldn't delete or move anything. It would just have NO feedback from what it was doing... I restarted it and before the log in screen I got "Configuring Windows Updates". I logged back in and everything worked properly.
I really don't understand what's going on. :\

That's probably the bug they patched in the update.

Was it telling you it was running exes or was it just not happening?
Is there any way of getting the windows classic theme for windows 8? Using high contrast mode disables images in web browsing so i can't use that, and i just can't stand the windows 8 metro theme.

Custom themes work just as well as they do in 7
Here is a nice one: http://liveordietm.deviantart.com/art/AeroByDesign-For-Windows-8-332837388 - almost identical to the custom non-aero/classic theme I used in 7.

What theme did you install?

It just wasn't happening D:
cool, ran chkdsk /r on windows 8 and now it's hanging at 27%. did a bit of research and apparently it could take hours upon hours until resolving itself
fun

Fix it, because the other style solution(s) are directly responsible for my windows install being totally and utterly broken. Just booted to black screen (no cursor) one day after windows updates, all system restore points failed to restore. I know what I'm doing too in terms of disabling services/drivers from offline registry editing, uninstalling windows updates offline etc., made absolutely no difference. The only references I can find to the black screen issue without a cursor are all ux* patch associated.
My uxstyle install was also broken, so I'd had to go looking for alternatives

Looks like it's that time again.

That was some photoshop thing on DA, not entirely sure why it's a preview image unless its point is just to be an attention grabber.
Wait wait, whoa whoa...
Windows 9 already??

It looks like Windows Blue, not Windows 9.
