Right now I wouldn't mind some darker color schemes for apps, maybe a "Night Mode". It won't do me any good to stare at pure white screens at 11PM. :v:
Apparently you can set the start screen to not show up when logging it (takes you straight to the desktop).
But here's the problem. Works in Server 8 only. What the hell Microsoft.
I fucking love the lock screen with that one picture of a long road
It's so sleek and modern and metro-y
Got my first BSOD today - something about a driver power state error. Happened when I hovered over the bottom left of the screen.
Its the start screen, its cancer.
I really love the Consumer Preview. I will definitely be buying the full package of Windows 8 once it is released.
..am I the only one who likes the metro? :v:
I adore metro, it is fucking beautiful. To me it is simplistic, modern and beautiful. I want more applications to take advantage of this it has so much good potential.
Microsoft's layouts in the past have been old and bland or just plain unconvincing such as aero (sorry but I thought aero sucked) . Metro creates this fantastic experience that will make you realize how much you can do with this.
Like Latin_Greek mentioned, chrome should definitely use metro and so should other applications like skype, steam (this please), iTunes etc.
I actually on that thought would love to see a steam metro version, to me it would look fantastic.
Metro on its own is just fine, but hopping between it and a proper desktop UI is awful.
I'll take one or the other I don't care, but not both.
It would be much better if we didn't had to deal with a scroll bar but instead could just hold the mouse and just drag it from anywhere.
This hasn't been a default since around Windows 2000.
And that was a mistake, it was a poor attempt to make things easier for the user (but not even Macs do this, and that is alarming considering Apple hates power users and tech enthusiasts)
I just wish keyboard scrolling was universal in all Metro apps. Would make things a lot easier.
Yeah I almost never see UAC anymore. Only ccleaner uses it. I recommend turning off the desktop dimming.
Without the dimming, UAC could be intercepted by viruses, making it useless. Either use it with dimming or don't use it at all.

Actually, you could turn off the dimming if you're on a standard user account, since you need to enter password.
So I just installed Win8. How do I boot Windows 7 which I still have installed now?
So I just installed Win8. How do I boot Windows 7 which I still have installed now?
What method did you use when installing Windows 8? If you chose upgrade or the full reformat option, you'll have nuked your 7 installation.
Otherwise, you should be able to choose Windows 7 via the bootloader when booting your PC.
I think I didn't choose any of these two options, I'll check if I can do something with the bootloader.
It doesn't show battery info for me. Nor does it detect my touch pad. Not my GT540M either. If I try to install drivers for the 2 latter, the driver installer just doesn't find the device :|
So far I don't like metro. I tried having an open mind, but it's horrible to use my touch pad to take the mouse across the screen to start some app. I also hate it how I can't just click and scroll on the metro screen, I have to take the mouse pointer ALL THE WAY DOWN to the bottom of the screen. I also hate how there are NO visual cues for ANYTHING. I had to look up where to find control panel and the shut down button. I still can't figure out how to open the Downloads folder besides clicking on the Explorer tile and navigating to it from there. I dislike having no Start Menu to pin things on. I can't find a single use for the metro screen. People say "you just click and type to search" but I was able to do that in 7 already, metro screen brings no new improvement and just makes it a pain to use. I've been using Win8 for a while now, I used the DP and now the CP and I've been trying to get used to the metro screen but I just can't. It's painful to use. I like the optimizations and some of the small things like more hotkeys and ISO mounter, but everything else I just wanna disable if possible. If I can't do that, I'll just stick to 7.

I think he means a malicous program could just click "yes"

Check for a folder called windows.old in on the drive you installed it on. If it's there, windows 7 has played it's part. You'll have all your files there, though, so you'll be able to make it like before fairly fast. Did you make a new partition for windows 8 beforehand?
I don't see any windows.old folder neither on my drive with Win7, nor with Win8. For installation I only formatted one of my drives I had Windows XP installed on.
um...what?
The purpose of the dimming is to pull the interaction with UAC away from everything else. It's meant to stop malware from being able to just send the "okay" option to the UAC dialogue.
MSDN describes this as the secure desktop, it's an isolated application that cannot be interacted with from outside.
Thanks to EasyBCD I managed to launch my Windows 7. No problems so far; I have to make sure everything works correctly though.

Well why doesn't MS implement a faster, smoother, more intuitive manner of doing this? Often times the dimming is very heavily delayed, or Windows has some sorta of seizure.

Because it's launching a new application environment to make sure it's secure perhaps? You can't leave it running in the background constantly as it's a security risk, so you create a new instance when it's required to remove the possibility of something getting in there while it was idling.
Does the new start screen show all the non-metro apps by default too?

I've never had any delay when the secure desktop is shown.

Only ones you've installed. Other wise they're in the Apps folder.
Why does Windows 8 suck? It won't allow use of common netbook resolutions such as 1024x600 which is the most widely produced. Is microsoft turning a blind eye to the mobile market?

Netbooks shouldn't be running such obscure resolutions. I know size is a problem for them, but that's just a weird resolution to use. And they should be considering a lighter OS considering they are designed around browsing the Web mainly.

If they don't give users an option not to use it then you're going to have to stick to 7 on your netbook. I read somewhere that for low resolutions it'd go back to the old interface. The problem with that was I only saw some user on a forum say it with no backing up so I ignored it. Keep hoping though, there's still over half a year to go.

So you're saying its a hardware problem that Windows 7 worked fine on my netbook without any limitations and now apparently I'm going to be forced to buy a new 'windows 8 compatible' netbook for every day out and about use?
I don't like how I can't close apps easily with an x at the corner of the screen. I have to use alt+f4 and sometimes that doesn't even work..
I don't think this is something for the professional world. Stick to Windows 7 those who are using a computer for strictly business.
I encourage all of you to at least try it out once.

I saw metro working on ARM devices yet they can't give us low resolution metro support.
