So the bootloader loads Windows 8 before you selecting to boot windows 8 and then if you select windows 7 it reboots the machine. :| That's stupid. [editline]11th March 2012[/editline] Looks like I somehow fixed my battery. I went to Device Manager, Enabled 'Show Hidden Devices' under View, right clicked my battery and clicked 'Scan for hardware changes'.
today i pretty much made up my mind about windows 8, i'm sticking to windows 7 unless microsoft gives me the option to remove all elements of metro from my pc experience, and basically just leave me with a faster windows 7 with a nice Aero update, i just can't switch to 8. they took a big risk with the metro integration and i think they got the bad end of the bet. in the end metro is haphazardly integrated with the desktop experience and it feels a lot more like i'm running two seperate operating systems rather than one. metro's design and gesture choices are unnatural and take getting used to even for a "power user", and managing your PC settings through metro is ridiculously inconsistent and out of place. things aren't where they should be, it's jumbled up and uncomfortable. all around metro just kind of ruined the windows 8 experience for me. it wouldn't be so bad if microsoft acknowledged criticism and fixed the obvious problems with the operating system, but so far they've been silent and it seems from all interviews they're completely oblivious to how awkward their implementation of the metro interface has been. they're so confident in their new mobile approach to an operating system it's like they just refuse to acknowledge any possible flaws. the fact that people who make a living designing this operating system actually looked at the current build of windows 8 with all its flaws and awful design choices and said "It's time for the public to experience this" really blows my mind. people got paid to make obviously bad design choices
The visual studio installer is how I think all Win8 desktop apps should look. [editline]11th March 2012[/editline] Not visual studio itself tho. [editline]11th March 2012[/editline] See that desktop.ini file? If I delete it it comes back after reboot. How do I get rid of it?
re-hide system files. View -> Options -> View -> tick Hide protected Operating System Files
Microsoft does it the same way every one else does. The release an RC, if it's good enough it goes through, otherwise they fix whatever's wrong with the first RC and then release another RC.
Then explain this: Windows Vista RC2 build: 5744.16384 Windows Vista RTM build: 6000.16386 Windows 7 RC build: 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 Windows 7 RTM build: 7600.16385.win7_rtm.090713-1255 Clearly they do not ship the RC and their RTM is a different build.
Microsoft artificially changes the build numbers for release. They also artificially change specific milestone builds like Betas and RCs. Also not all builds are giving to the public, most are given to partners and OEMs. For example, Vista RC2 5744 was the last public build to be released yet partners and OEMs got 58xx some time after that. 7 build 7100 was the last public release yet partners again got 7200 afterwards there are no 7300 builds, so after the 7200 line it went RTM. Also if they go to try to fix a bug for example, compile it to whatever build number it is, find out that they didn't actually fix it, they then recompile it which adds +1 to the build number.
Every time I log in to Windows 8, my wi-fi is fucked, and I have to use the troubleshooter to fix it. Doesn't matter if I use Microsoft's driver, or Ralink's driver, it happens every time. It's almost enough to put me back on 7.
Also if they go to try to fix a bug for example, compile it to whatever build number it is, find out that they didn't actually fix it, they then recompile it which adds +1 to the build number.
Which, again, is my point: when you do real RCs, you don't fix the bug and release as final, you fix the bug, release as another RC, and if no further bugs are found, that version becomes final. The way you describe it, they release other builds.
Windows 8 fucking deleted the 7 partition and I ran it on a different one with my dad's computer
What? The fuck? Why didn't you just do this? Please tell me you didn't fully install windows 8, that's just so painful to watch, a virtual machine is perfect for this type of thing.
Sometimes a virtual machine just doesn't cut it.
Exactly. And running it as a host seems to reveal issues that didn't exist in the VM, and fixes others (like performance issues). I ran it in the virtual machine however to even see if it was even worth dual booting.
by treating everyone that doesn't use one as if they're mentally handicapped
Normally my virgin ears would be all offended by this mean and evil stereotyping but honestly when it's about someone who didn't backup a production machine before installing a work in progress OS on it, I'm tempted to include mental handicaps in the list of probable cause...

My internet isn't screwing up in VirtualBox, I installed Windows 8 on my main machine. But every login, I have to launch network diagnostics to fix my Wi-fi connection. I wish I could at least automate the process, like create a batch script to disable and re-enable the adapter after login, but I haven't found any information on how to do such a thing. I'm using an Airlink101 AWHL6070 PCI card, which is 150N capable. The card's chipset is a Ralink 2860 (RT2860). It has Windows XP and Vista/7 drivers. The latest drivers available are from November of 2011, which is fairly recent. Microsoft's built-in driver is dated June 1st, 2011. Both drivers are equally bad. My WUSB54G v4 by Linksys works fine using the Vista driver, but it's significantly slower at loading webpages. So if you 'Windows Wizards' can help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate the help. :)
Would anyone here know how I should get my sound drivers to work properly within Win8? I'm using a Xonar DG by the way.
hey guys. sorry I haven't been around much here, I've been busy recently applying to universities. how well does the preview run in virtualbox? I'd like to test this but I'd rather not have to dual boot, and I'm not just going to format and use a beta OS (even though I did with win7, but I liked win7 way more than XP, unlike win8, which I don't know if I like more than 7)
It's fine with Virtualization enabled in your BIOS.
Yeah, that and VMWare Workstation make it feel native and very very speedy. Can't really notice a difference.

My other computer I've got here will not turn on, at all. I'm faced with the power LED blinking on and off in a 1 second on, 1 off kind of loop. Last thing I did was shut down Windows 8 (via the charms settings, shut down etc). Any clues? I'm pretty sure this is because of Windows 8 because I remember reading that WIndows 8 doesn't switch off the computer, per se, but it puts it into a kind of stand by to make boot times faster, if I recall correctly. The machine will not turn on at all.
