Well I don't need to look at the start menu in 7 as the first result from searches is automatically highlighted. I generally keep what I'm reading or my media player at the bottom right of my screen so new programs don't get in the way. Anyway my point is that it is unnecessarily disruptive to have a full screen start menu open and it wastes my time.
I don't know then, 'cause I launch with my window key and I would still think about what I'm even going to launch, haha. Even if I don't have to physically read what I'm typing, I still wouldn't be able to read at the same time.
I really hate where windows is going with those metro screens, and probable some other stupid stuff they will put in. its good for tablets but please keep it away from my desktop/laptop. what was wrong with operating systems 10 years ago. I'm talking about appearance overall look and feel, not ram usage and other technical stuff. Seriously 10 years ago it was just plain start button and some plain icons on your desktop. Now its all colorful floating rainbow buttons everywhere, magic useless sidebars and many more jinglebells. Just give me back my look and feel of windowsXp, with the functionality of todays. i just prefer a organized start button where i can see all my programs that i use allot. Than looking at some buttons, i feel like a monkey in a test lab who will get a banana for pressing all the right buttons. The only reason i haven't moved to linux or Apple is because of compatibility with programs i use allot, like 3ds max.
The problem with this here post is that he wants a UI like XP when we all know Microsoft wants XP dead so bad.

Hence why Windows, Apple and even linux make it look different every so often.

You click an installed program it launches. You search for a program you execute it. It's just styled differently and fullscreen. Not saying it's good or bad, but functionality wise it's almost exactly the same. People keep thinking your suppose to use it and only it forever and ever, which is simply not true. Just drop to the desktop and use the start screen like you used the start menu. The only downside is it's there by default and you can't go straight to the desktop from logon. And Control Panel searching is separate which can be annoying.
Consider this. To switch to a Chrome browser tab, you have to: switch to the Explorer Shell in the Metro application switcher (and hope this doesn't go wrong), switch to Chrome in the traditional taskbar, and then switch to the right tab within Chrome.
What the fuck is this? Type Chrome, hit enter (or click the tile). This isn't fucking hard.

I still use w7 with the windows classic theme and i cant expect everyone to do that, but its not so much the color of the ui but the overall way you use and feel windows that has changed. Don't get me wrong, it will be very good for a 13yo kid and my grandmother and even those dumb blonde facebook girls, but not for the average joe. Change for the sake of change is just stupid. They think they will make more money with selling useless metro apps who nobody needs then making a user friendly OS. What actually will happen is that the average joe will change to Apple or even linux. And even companies are getting smarter everyday and will learn that there are better alternatives to windows, and software developers will have to follow that demand for other operating systems if they wanna keep selling software. And windows will lose its monopoly. Ofcourse this is actually me wishful thinking, but people are starting to notice that there are alternatives to windows. I haven't actually used w8 but that because my laptop is holding itself together with ductape and i dont want to mess anything up until i buy my new laptop this summer. Gonna make a full review then.
Remember there was a way to remove all the Metro stuff from Windows 8 via the Registery? I kinda hope they are going to work on that and make it a regular option (to bring back the old start menu and disable the corners) so less people will stick with Windows 7.

Wasn't really intended for the public.

Businesses are just not going to migrate to win8, the average luser just will not be able to wrap their heads around the changes. incredible performance and functionality upgrades without the 3.5" phone UI please.
I can't believe that they've abolished the start menu. Fullscreen start is a fucking terrible idea. An application should be a lightweight, small window. Everything about metro is flawed. Unless Windows 8 is offering a performance boost to offset the crappy "one user experience" bullshit for the fuckers with tablet PCs & windows phones, I won't bother with it. I have enough OEM win7 keys to last me every upgrade until the next release comes out & they've ground off the rough edges (perhaps literally, squares are so 1990). What I really dislike is the stupid fragmented user experience. Windows has supported HTA applications for over a decade, and not once have I used them, simply making them full screen and tacking them onto an oversized menu will still not make me want to use them.

Colour me corrected, it's not that bad. I'd like to be pointed to where I can launch straight into the desktop, and I wish the control panel was more accessible, and I still think that the fullscreen start menu is a poor start, and I sort of wish it would go translucent if the desktop was on.

Taskbar looks nice with the new highlights, though odd against the window.

I usually lean on it instead and then use the keyboard when I have to. Typing the name of the program to access it or going through those extra steps are both inconvenient methods. But I guess if you have the tile there to click on (without typing the name first) it's not that big of a problem.

Microsoft needs to go all out to make Windows 8 work. I'm using the consumer preview on my dad's new computer (2 monitors and a 1080p TV, ivy bridge, 180GB ssd, very nice) and I like it for the most part. I'm glad that they're killing aero, because this means they'll probably work on doing an entire revamp of every icon on the computer. Metro looks awesome IMO, they just need to make sure desktop users are still first class citizens. I like the screenshot, I just hope that the rest of the icons change to Metro (I'm assuming they will)
Neither gesture works perfectly in the Consumer Preview—it should be expected that some things will not be perfect when we effectively design and test the product in the open like we do. The corners are too fragile to target reliably with the mouse right now, and it is too easy to frustratingly “fall away” from them. We have already significantly improved this in internal builds. And today’s touch hardware, which was designed for Windows 7, doesn’t always do a great job of interpreting swipes from the edge. The good news is that hardware designed for Windows 8 will have excellent edge detection, and our device manufacturer partners have been working on this for a long time.
This is really the nicest news from that blog post.
I wish it were 2018 just so I could see what WinTen will be like and how Win8 shaped it, and to see how many of the complaints about 8 have faded away.
No Aero in Windows 8 either? Looks like 7 is going to become the next XP that everyone sticks with for a long time... -_- I'm sorry, but I LOVE Aero. Especially in Win8 DP, it was perfect. The basic themes did NOT give me any snappier of a desktop performance, and looked ugly as fuck without transparency.
Instead of killing off aero all together, why not just make the new look the default and move aero to the optional side of the theme spectrum? That way people who do like its glassy-ness can drool over it to their hearts content and those who don't can use the new clean opaque theme. It's a win-win. I just hope the new theme is not that blinding white in the pic, it's too damn bright.
I hope next the change up all the ugly default icons.

It's still composited.
