I'd be willing to bet just editing the msstyles would bring back glass UIs if you wanted it. It's still composited.
True, but it'd still be a pain in the ass for a good number of people. I guess if ya want it that bad you'll go to the lengths to get it. Oh well, wishful thinking and hoping I guess.
You mean the grey ribbon bar? What would prefer it be?
I'd just prefer some color I suppose. For example, the content area is white, chrome is slightly off-white, titlebar (forward/back button area) is white. It just seems like there's a complete lack of depth.
I'd love to see it with the final icons to be honest. Also reminder - ribbon bar can be minised to only show tab titles. And I think it starts by default like that. At least in win8 explorer.
The window colors can be changed, right? That picture is just blaring white.
The blog post that had this screenshot gives a lot of interesting points. Right now my suggestions really are: 1. Bring back the start button - even if it still goes to Metro, just bring it back. 2. Move power controls closer, WAY closer.

For god sake Microsoft please change the ribbon icons to a more metro look, not the office 2007/2010 era
the ribbon looks like it takes up too much space. Hope it can be disabled for some applications; because really, if you're an experienced user who uses keyboard shortcuts often, you more than likely won't need the ribbon when browsing through windows explorer. As fruxo said, they should at least experiment a bit in trying to get a metro kind of look going with the Windows 7 interface (or whatever you want to call it) in Windows 8. It's as if Windows 8 is two separate operating systems, an old one with a bit of makeup applied and the new tile one.
Does anyone know how to turn off those pesky "To get the most out of this app, switch to a Microsoft Account" pop-ups?

If you still don't know where you went wrong; the ribbon can be "deactivated" with a single click, and even with it on you're seeing more elements than in Windows 7. Putting the Metro look on 7 is pretty much what they've have been doing with Windows 8, and the the so called "other OS" is actually you're start menu. You're never forced to use it for more than a few seconds, and it's just as, or more usable than the old one. Of course in my opinion, but I've been using Windows 8 every day since the DP, so I hope it counts as something. [editline]19th May 2012[/editline] I also like how people are flipping their shit because Aero is gone - sure, I liked it, but just a few months ago people were saying that Aero was pretty bad, and the first thing they did was reskinning Windows to death.

I hope to hell they still allow this option.
Will it use the task bar theme colour throughout applications for icons and buttons and stuff in a similar way to the accent colour in Windows Phone 7? That'd be nice.
Will it use the task bar theme colour throughout applications for icons and buttons and stuff in a similar way to the accent colour in Windows Phone 7? That'd be nice.
That would be nice, but I wouldn't count on it.
Don't know how much I like how the window chrome is white but the taskbar is transparent. Why can't they keep the window chrome transparent by default (or make the taskbar white)?

Personally I don't really care how it looks. I get Microsoft products heavily discounted via their company store anyway.
Speaking of themes, I almost completely ported a 7 theme to 8: [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/IMhStc.png[/t] The way it imported caused DWM to shutdown so here's a screenshot of Windows 8 using Aero Basic for the first time: [t]http://i.imgur.com/ZfwNl.jpg[/t]
Do it with regular Aero (Windows 8 Consumer preview might be best to port from) and you'll be my hero.
Am I the only one that really prefers the win8 theme?
Am I the only one that really prefers the win8 theme?
Thank christ for that. I thought I was alone.
I like it too. I don't really like Aero that much. Too many glows, gradients, shadows, and translucencies all over the place. Windows 8 looks nice and clean, minimal and modern.
My only issue is that the Windows 7 icons don't fit the style but hopefully they're gonna fix all of that up.
I don't think I've seen this icon used in Windows 8 yet.
Am I the only one that really prefers the win8 theme?
The old squared off aero theme, yeah.

If they just went from the obnoxious #fefefe (which might just be because of the compression on the picture and is likely solid white (#ffffff)) to a more hushed #fbfbfb for the active window chrome, it would look so much better. vs The white taskbar at the bottom also looks much better than a randomly transparent one. Fuck "familiarity of Windows 7"...do you really think having opaque windows but a transparent taskbar is going to be "familiar" to people? I don't get the UI team at Microsoft.
I think a solid taskbar would look odd though. The current transparent one is subtle and works with the wallpaper. Despite the inconsistency I think I'd prefer it like that than solid. And to be honest OS X's dock is transparent and has opaque window frames, and it looks alright.
