My only gripe with Windows 8 is Metro being forced, instead of optional. Being the default is fine, but at least give us the option to work around it if we so desire.
I think this is all people are asking for really. An official start menu with the option to disable metro would be great.
I tried to put all the shortcuts on my start menu onto Metro in VirtualBox while Facepunch was down:

What's with the gadgets icon for all of your programs?
they're supposedly getting rid of a lot of legacy code, most notably the old start menu, which by removing its code, they effectively make it impossible to restore through registry hacks. Still, an application could fake a start menu with file browsing and everything.
What's with the gadgets icon for all of your programs?
I didn't have time to actually go and install everything in VirtualBox so I just made shortcuts to sidebar and pinned them to Start just to show how messy it looks compared to the start menu.
Anybody see the facepunch thread on Microsoft supposedly killing the option for third-party programs to create a windows start button?
I'm curious over what the controversy is. Isn't the metro UI supposed to essentially BE the start menu? Do people just not really like the look of it, or what?
It's in part from the wording of the title - Microsoft is BLOCKING!! when in fact they're doing something else entirely.
To nab what I posted on the verge
Okay, the title of the article is intentionally misleading and inflamatory.
Microsoft isn’t blocking anyone or anything from exploiting stuff to run legacy code in the system.
They’re removing the exploited legacy code, because it has been deprecated. In the s ame way 16bit support was removed from x64 system or how XP msstyles were deprecated by aero ones.
This is like complaining that progman.exe was removed from the system.
Plus most people still don't understand that the start screen doesn't remove features compared to the start menu
umm it's available now
Release Preview is live!
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso
edit: You'll pay for this Techbot!
No upgrades from the consumer preview, at least Engadget says so.
Is there any way to install this on an android tablet, to dual-boot?
The upgrade assistant has told me that I need to update Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Platinum. I am honestly surprised it was THAT thorough
Aww shit. I just finished downloading it but it fails to verify integrity. >: (

Ah, never mind. It was just me screwing up.
Heads up for people that want WMC in the RP:
Windows Media Center is not preinstalled in Windows 8 Release Preview. If you want to use Windows Media Center, you need to add it by following these steps:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Add features to Windows 8 .
Tap or click I already have a product key.
Enter this product key: MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7 and then click Next.
Select the checkbox to accept the license terms and then click Add features.
Your PC will restart and Windows Media Center will now be on your PC and the tile will be pinned to the Start screen.
IE10 still refuses to be in Metro mode if it's not the default browser.
Panda, do you have any ideas as to how to get Server 2012 to perform better in Virtualbox? Everything runs fine, except the start screen which basically grinds everything to a halt.
i'm gonna pop in my SSD and go ahead and install this

everything but my case and CPU is here. just staring at me
This weird freeze bug I am having is still present.
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
This bug is even worse than before. I don't know if tthis post will appear, but it keeps happening. I'm about to reset my PC again. What the fuck.

Are you running it in VirtualBox?
[editline]31st May 2012[/editline]
Guess not.
Okay, so basically, it's not completely frozen, but things get really odd. The letters I type appear very slowly, my music freezes, I can't open the start menu or switch between apps, I can still use chrome, but it shows less and less signs of life. in this state it can't be shut down, the only cure is a reset, which is something I don't want to do, because it messes with my ssd.
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Nope, on my main PC. I was fine with it before, it happened rarely on CP, but now it happened twice in half an hour i had tthe release preview
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Hmm, i seem to be unable to leave this page, the task manager doesn't open.
what do guys
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
even the hot corners are broken.
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Okay, rebooted, all is fine now, still, this is really fucking odd.
Ok, I just saw something weird in the Windows 8 page:

notice it's the old flag shape. Did microsoft ditch the new design after the backlash against it?

Sorry no idea. Previous 8's that I've ran in Vbox tended just to be slow, I imagine it has to do with its display driver.

That bug alone is making me consider not even getting the RC. It's the sole reason I reinstalled Windows 7 back when the dev prev released.
I find VMWare performs a lot better than Virtualbox
I find VMWare performs a lot better than Virtualbox
Though for a free VM solution Vbox is pretty decent and beats VMWare Player. But as for Workstation I don't think anything beats it.

Google tells me this has something to do with drivers. Gonna try installing Nvidia drivers now, we'll see how it goes.

It's still using the new one in the preview.
I really wouldn't be surprised if they'd ditch the new one, though.
Also, Start 8 still works perfectly here.
I find it unlikely that they changed it just like that and brushed it off.
I thought they'd ditched it too, then I launched the upgrade assistant :v:

And this is my problem with Metro.
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Look at all the empty space.
During the first 30 minutes of actual usage I became so frustrated that I began writing annoying stuff down.
This is what I have so far:
Music app does not have a volume knop.
Music app changes color ALL the time.
Music app LOVES Linkin park hybrid theory. If I play a linkin park song on a list of random artist, the music app will ONLY show thump nails from the Hybrid Theory album. If I play anything else, it will display a mix of all the albums in the playlist.
Opening right-hand charm on left-hand screen closes metro on right-hand screen.
Using Metro to open a non-Metro application while a Metro application is running closes the open Metro application and returns me to the “home” tiles. I would expect it to automatically reopen the metro application again.
It is extremely impractical to combine Metro and non-Metro applications because it will distrupt work flow. If I start the Metro video player on one screen and work with non-Metro applications on the other screen I run into troubles as soon as I need to open a new program. If I use the “Start” - button it will close the video player and pause the video. Then after I have opened the application I wanted, I then must manually reopen the video player.
I just cannot imagine myself using Metro, ever. I think if I end up upgrading to win8, I will just stop using the start button and install something like Launchy instead.
Please note that my dislike for Metro is not based upon bugs, but rather the whole media-center-like concept. I have never been a fan of such concepts (for a desktop) which is why I also have a strong hate for Itunes and the likes. (Yes I just compared an OS GUI to a media player).
It used to not bother me but people calling the start screen "Metro" is now starting to. Metro is a design language/idea/concept. Not the start screen.
