That's where the rest of the programs go.
You mean "apps". Real programs go on the real desktop where I'll be spending 99% of my time.
It used to not bother me but people calling the start screen "Metro" is now starting to. Metro is a design language/idea/concept. Not the start screen.
What do you call it then? Start? Metro-start? Metro-menu?
That new mouse-over-link cursor is really nice BTW?
What do you call it then? Start? Metro-start? Metro-menu?
Start screen or start menu. What people are doing now would be the equivalent of calling the start menu in Windows 7 "the aero".
Also I just found out in the RC clicking the Apply to Folders option in the folder's view menu now applies that view for all folders rather than all folders of that type. Thank god.

no, he means programs. as in shortcuts. it's exactly the fucking same as the original start menu

also lmao at that stupid fucking distinction you made
I'm surprised to be getting a 1.2MB/s steady download from Microsoft's servers right now. :v:

I was steady at 2.3 when I was getting it. Microsoft has the money for the bandwidth to do such a thing.

I'm getting a steady 580 KB/sec.
My tablet arrived today, just in time!

Now to backup the system image and get on with 8.
Nice hand.
Even though I installed Windows 8 on a separate hard disk it still decided to overwrite my Windows 7 boot loader. How do I restore the old loader again?
Booting with my Windows 7 disk and running fixmbr / fixboot / rebuildbcd did not help.
Set 7 as the default OS.
Fixed it in msconfig. Now I just have a problem with Windows 7 claiming that it is not "genuine". Oh well, can't have it all can we :P I find it strange how a messed boot loader can do that though.

And this is my problem with Metro.

Look at all the empty space.
You could add a lot more of programs there. But if you don't want to, maybe Microsoft could enable making super large live tiles that constantly display lots of information. now that'd be useful. Imagine having a large live tile for your music player. You can browse your collection right there, play buttons right there too, and pictures of the artist playing in a slideshow along with song title and everything.
In fact, I feel inspired. Time to do a mockup!
i decided to not install my ssd on my computer because mounting it in this dell would be too much of a pain
The Travel app has some neat panoramic photos of places.
Nice hand.
Wanted to give a size comparison. It's tiny.
On an unrelated note, Windows 7 system image creation takes FOREVER.

And here's the mockup! the buttons are crudely done, but you get the idea.

I like this, but on a tablet resolution I don't know how well that would work out.
So apparently my DVD drive isn't recognized in Windows 8 CP, and I haven't noticed until now... When I tried to open the RP disc. The drive is not disabled in Device Manager, it's simply being treated as if the drive doesn't exist whatsoever. :(
What do?

Well it could be limited to resolution like SxS apps are.
The Release Preview feels much snappier than the Consumer Preview for me, also it included a touchscreen driver (with digitizer mode!) out of the box for my tablet, I'm finishing soldering some things on it and I'll also show how nice it looks like on it's final revision
jesus how much snappier can windows 8 get??
It used to not bother me but people calling the start screen "Metro" is now starting to. Metro is a design language/idea/concept. Not the start screen.
How fucking pretentious of you.

How well does the built in driver work? You had a lot of issues getting that to work if I recall correctly.
Win8 is running better on my netbook the Win 7, im liking it so far.

Nothing in that post would fit the definition of pretentious.
Microsoft also seems to be working with synaptics to release special drivers for gestures on multi-touch enabled touchpads (i.e. all new laptops). You flick from the sides of the touchpad to bring up charms, and scroll horizontally by just dragging your finger from left to right.

This is an awesome idea. Although I wonder how sensitive it is (would users accidentally trigger charms when scrolling?)
Also, more Software impressions, Dear god, Sketchbook actually works now, and so does Osu!, The Wikipedia app looks and feels great, some apps like the Reader and News app seems to be gone (The RSS News app was replaced by "Bing News"), Hacky landscape still seems to work fine, Youtube seems to work on IE10 again (Edit: It's flash player!), Battery life feels better (40 minutes in an almost dead, hand replaced battery!), And the music app is now filled with ads
Yeah the music app is disappointing on the main screen. I wish there was an option to just show my collection only when launched.

Yeah, I forgot that Google Chrome and KeePass 2 were fake programs.
I am so glad that the digitizer doesn't work in setup. How useful. If I didn't have a keyboard I would be fucked.
