Have you tried it with chrome uninstalled?

I just think everything needs to be fairly neutral, let your wallpaper set the colour scheme, don't go out melting everyone's eyeballs with clashing colours.[/QUOTE]
A light gradient like what they're using for dialog buttons works too.

I doubt having Chrome just on disk is going to cause a whole OS to fail.
not going to upgrade until there is some sort of start menu mod for the latest window 8 build

I think the lighter tabs fit due to the fact they're special tabs.
If people are looking to put the effort into integrating the start menu on to Windows 8 surely if you're not looking to embrace the changes in the OS, why not look into porting Windows 8 features to Windows 7 that way you're not going to be chasing Microsoft on every change?

Good news everyone! [url]http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2012/06/08/visual-studio-express-2012-for-windows-desktop.aspx[/url]
I'm using Start8 by Stardock on my Windows 8 RP laptop. Runs great, and feels integrated, with PNG "Start Orb" theme support.

My complaint about Start8 is that it's just the start screen resized and doesn't really work when that small in terms of amount of content shown.
It would work better if it was a mix between the start screen and start menu like these concepts a friend of mine made:

I have Windows 8 on my laptop.
It's running faster, but the design looks ugly, and sometimes, it freeze.
I guess it's my laptop :D
[QUOTE=Ezhik;36240988]I disagree about the desktop browsers part. They use different UI elements, which is something that's not really a choice in true Metro.
Let me show you this with iOS browsers:
This is stock Safari:
[thumb]http://iphone.dashhacks.com/sites/iphone.dashhacks.com/files/images/Apple_iPad_Safari_large.jpg[/thumb]
This is iCab, a third party browser:
[thumb]http://ipadthoughts.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ICab3.jpg[/thumb]
This is Terra:
[thumb]http://a5.mzstatic.com/us/r1000/101/Purple/9d/54/38/mzl.azmzvphm.1024x1024-65.jpg[/thumb]
All three look very similar.
The only browsers I found that did look different are the ones that did not explicitly follow iOS guidelines:
Opera Mini:
[thumb]http://www.intomobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/opera-mini.jpg[/thumb]
Dolphin Browser (which also totally doesn't look like Chrome):

Sorry, but I seriously can't see how can a browser truly look Metro without looking like IE.[/QUOTE]
If you ask me - if you enter a system with design and style guidelines (ios, windows aero, windows metro, OSx) you should follow the design guidelines from the system. in that case Opera on Ios is bad - because it forces it's own design paradigm.
In the same vein Safari or Itunes on windows is bad as well, as they force their own design paradigm on windows.

But then you now have 3 "start" screens. I think that's even more confusing.
i don't think the point is you use all 3 at the same time
So I've just moved over to Windows 8 from Windows 7, and I must say, I'm impressed! It's fast as hell and looks beautiful. Still a bit confusing in places, had to use Task Manager to get myself out of the 'settings' area. I don't know if it's the install wizard, but my USB wireless adapter (Which doesn't work properly out of the box with Linux, nevermind Windows 7) worked straight from install, graphics drivers worked fine. Had to install Realtek drivers for sound but that was no issue. Wireless is fast as hell too!
Right because microshit has not put basic thought into that programs might want to use IE to load stuff without any tinkering I am leaving it.

What?
Hmm, the messenger app wont let me share photos into it, I'm disappointed.
Oh well, my laptop is back on linux now, its poor single core processor doesn't like running at 100% all the time.
[QUOTE=Panda X;36264709]What?[/QUOTE]
Programs are trying to use IE. Apparently it is not letting it thus breaking shit. I have no idea how to fix it.

[QUOTE=Panda X;36265506]What programs?[/QUOTE]
Any program that does not use webkit to display web pages within their own app.
[editline]9th June 2012[/editline]
It calls for things from IE and for whatever reason it wont give it to the program to render the page.
Thanks for clarifying because that original sentence was extremely awkward.

Have you got an example of a program not working on Windows 8? I'm pretty sure Windows Explorer uses a subset of IE to render some parts and that works fine
Any ideas why the default apps are now starting to randomly crash at the splash screen and then continue to refuse to start? It's getting a little annoying now. I've begun reinstalling the apps that don't launch, but it's terribly tedious.
[editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
apps which I've downloaded from the store are crashing now too.
[editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
it's just a select couple which don't.

My guess - trident got updated and those apps use old calls. Give it a while for them to update. I highly doubt they've limited trident. Since it's even accessible on Wp7.

Why won't you name the applications having issues?
[QUOTE=Dotmister;36273386]Why won't you name the applications having issues?[/QUOTE]
Guild Wars 2 was one of them trying to render a web page in game. They have implied on the forums that they are trying to use IE to render it and on 8 it does not work at all.
It is going to be the same for any other program that is trying to use those resources. It will not let the program use it.

Like I've said - most likely new API which hasn't been fully detailed yet. It's probably going to be a very simple switch and MS might even include a legacy one, if only because a lot of apps use UIwebview (or whatever the windows version of it is called. I honestly can't remember).

Eh, windows 8 isn't retail yet. There might be similar small kinks here and there. Also did it work in the previous versions or has it always not worked?
Other than having to use Task Manager to switch users (retarded...), I've really had no issues with the RP release. The wireless issues I had with the past 2 releases have been fixed, so I'm a happy man.
