You boot your laptop, you get a drink, and it's done when you come back. So yea, SSD really makes it much faster.
More like you boot your laptop then use it.

The laptop on that video boots from an SSD IIRC.
It still boots pretty fast on a HDD as well. I get about twenty-something seconds on my old computer that still just has a HDD. On my main computer with an SSD, though, it boots in pretty much an instant.

..it took much longer for me to boot a fresh Win8 installation and I don't think it'd be that much faster if I were to switch to SSD. I think there's something special about that laptop.

It would.
It would.
Comparing the startup speeds of Win7 on my laptop with SSD and my desktop with HDD that's a huge difference then, if that's true.
So ive learned that Win8 gives a crap load of false positives for programs (apps) my wifi stick words just fine despite what it said earlier
So as another thing,
im in a bit of a situation
im running 1920x1080 and its not filling my entire screen, got some sick black boarder all around, when I lower the res it fills the screen but thats only a temp fix,
anyone know ways for fixing this?
So is there anyway to make this useless OS work on screens that are under 1024x768? I installed this on a netbook, 1024x600.. and Windows Metro "Apps" or whatever gimmicky name they're called, aren't allowed to run at this res.. Wasn't windows 8 supposed to run on phones or some shit? Why are they doing this.
And also is there a way to use the search function without opening up the entire Metro shit? I'm reading something online, and when I need to read and type in the search thing at the same time like in windows 7 it's impossible.. How do I search the computer without leaving the desktop interface?

Windows 8 was never meant to run on phones, we have Windows Phone 7/8 for that. It was meant to provide one OS for both desktop and tablet use. And tablets actually tend to have quite high resolutions due to a higher pixel density than a normal monitor. So a Metro app will run on them fine.
And no, the search function is part of the Start Screen/ Explorer, you can search from Explorer if you really want to, but the Start Screen would be infinitely easier. You can't remove the Start Screen, but you can get Start Menu applications to recreate the functionality of it, so you'll just have to find and install one of those.

Thanks for the info, rolling back windows 7 on this netbook.

I can see why it'd be a pain to use on netbooks when you mention the resolution being that small. Perhaps MS didn't quite think that through.
Curious as to what this dynamic tick is.

Very generally speaking, (I’m not a hardware expert), your PC’s processor — like a clock — ticks at a certain rate. These ticks are received by the OS to perform various tasks and push paper around. When your PC is idle, however, this constant ticking and interrupting of the OS eats time and power.
Cue dynamic ticking.
This new concept involves the processor coalescing or batching together ticks when idle, only delivering them when a more interesting event occurs. In other words, the processor gets to hit the snooze button a few more times before waking up.

I have a SSD in my desktop. Windows doesn't even show the boot screen for a second it starts so fast. It's BIOS, flash of the "Windows" logo, lock screen. All in less than 3 seconds after the BIOS.

I'm gonna take a wild stab in the dark and guess at some point there's gonna be some kinda KB update/patch that fixes the issue, or at least adds ????x600 to the list of usable resolutions.
I have a gut feeling that a lot of things are gonna get patched.
anyone got a easy guide to dual-boot windows 7 and windows 8 with w7 as main OS?
did you try this http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/
that didn't work for me :(

Then I can't wait to put the final version of Win8 on my laptop.
Btw, how fast does it start up from standby then?

AnyDVD HD + VLC 2.0 = Blu-ray bliss. :)
So far, I really like Windows 8. I'll mess around with it more but my impressions so far are that I think that everybody is way the fuck overreacting to the new start menu and everything feels intuitive and smooth.
Smooth, yes; intuitive, no.
Not really, so far everything is pretty much where I guessed it to be. I haven't had problems fucking with stuff. (Aside from the problems that still exist from Windows 7, which is kind of pathetic.)

Why is "Desktop" the root of my computer, and why can't I change this without fucking with the registry?

I can't keep my computer in standby because it always randomly wakes up. I just shut it down because it's just as fast. On the rare occasion that it goes to sleep and stays asleep, it wakes up instantaneously.

I use my desktop as a scratchpad workspace for moving files around. I like having an easy to find desktop shortcut.

Wakes up before you press the button. IT KNOWS WHAT YOU WANT BEFORE YOU DO.

I have the same issue with my monitor plugged with HDMI (On Windows 7). It's something ridiculously retarded that ATI did in their drivers, that for some fucked up reasons makes it use 15% under/overscan (forgot which) rather than turn it off entirely. At least that's how I fixed my issue; went in CCC and slid that back to 0%. For a while I had to do it every single time I rebooted, then they did something to fix it or I dunno.

I had this problem until I installed my graphics card drivers.
Do you have your graphics card drivers installed?

I think it's more of a windows legacy thing. The desktop has very often been actually listed as the root of the PC - might be with different mounting behaviour but it's been showing

Easier for some people to understand.
I'm back to w7, w8 kept crashing when using chrome..
I've never had Windows 8 crash while using Chrome... o.o

Ah. I've been lucky enough not to experience any of that on my Gateway MT6728 laptop with the Release Preview.
