If you upgrade from 7 to 8 does that mean you have to install it over 7?
Yes
I don't remember - if I buy the upgrade, I'll be able to upgrade the same Windows 7 installation indefinite times, right? Say, I reformat - I just install Windows 7 and then use the upgrade again? If I can do that, count me in.
Noob question: Can I create a partition on my SSD, currently hosting Win7, to install Windows 8 on without formatting? It's a 120 gig so I have about 72 GB of space left of it (120 total).

You can use the Reset my pc feature.

Ahh, I forgot about that one. Still - my SSD could break and what not, and I would like some kind of security.

I'm not guaranteeing it, but that's the way it worked with every previous version of Windows, so it should still work that way.
I think for alot of folks, Windows 8 is going to be a tough sale, so they're giving good prices.
Windows 8 has some problems, and the UI might not be the best, but it is really fast and performance>Looks ,
so i think i will upgrade it but keep w7 also because
i dont think lots of people will directly upgrade because it is something different, and because it is not the most user friendly OS.

It's super user friendly IMO, it's just different from the previous versions. Takes some time to get used to, but I think it's easier to understand in the end.
I have to admit though, the performance boost in Windows 8 is astounding from the speed of 7. I thought 7 was plenty fast until I booted the Consumer Preview on my laptop... HOLY-SHIT-FUCK, was I impressed.
i have an asus n75SF and s this it has a quick startup for w7, it starts up in 20< seconds what was pretty fast, then i used w8 for the first time it was done around 10< seconds .. it's really amazing how fast it is
ALSO :
I think if you use media option with an USB you can still install it on another partion / drive :

To install release preview i used upgrade as' with USB and had option to install on another drive etc, so yeah
Comparing the startup speeds of Win7 on my laptop with SSD and my desktop with HDD that's a huge difference then, if that's true.
I haven't booted Windows 7 on an SSD for a while, but Windows 8 certainly doesn't boot that fast for me as that video MS posted. I'm not claiming MS are lying since I am pretty sure my SSD is plugged into a SATAI port so it'll be a lot slower than most, but it still takes (a short) time to boot.

Also how in the name of god do you enter a url in Metro IE? I can see the URL bar thing sometimes, but I cannot work out what gesture is supposed to bring it up
[editline]3rd July 2012[/editline]
Actually Windows 8 seems to speed up booting after a few reboots, so now my boot is almost as fast as that video. Does anyone know why that is? If this was on a HDD I'd say it had cached stuff to be near the MBR or something but it's an SSD so wat

I think you can bring up the URL bar in Metro IE by right clicking or however you bring up the bottom bar in apps.
Just installed this. Looks pretty cool. How can I set up the music app thing to display my music instead of the market place shit?

Right click on music folder -> "Include in library" -> "Music"
Neat, thanks. Now how do I remove this popular music junk?

this, so much. I don't want to listen Call Me Maybe goddammit Microsoft, just let me listen to my hardcore progressive death metal :v:

What should I be doing about virus protection and firewalls in Windows 8? Normally I'd just go Avira/MBAM + Comodo Firewall, but I have no idea how complete these programs are on Windows 8.
I just use MSE + built-in Firewall. I can understand wanting a good third-party antirvirus, but there's really no need to use a third-party firewall. It does exactly what it says on the tin. (Especially if you're behind a router, because the router's NAT acts as another firewall)
MSE + Hardware firewall + MBAM as a scheduled task
I thought Windows 8 had MSE built in? At least that's what I read somewhere.
is there a significant change on the release preview compared to the consumer preview? I'm still using the latter and I don't feel like re installing the whole stuff again.

quite a difference, improvements everywhere.

It does. It's renamed to Windows Defender, replacing the old Windows Defender.
I love Windows 8 so much. I want a touch screen now.
I just installed windows 8, anyone else have problems with the right-click menu taking fucking forever to open? I tried looking through menu extensions with ShellExView, but disabling them one by one to find the culprit did nothing.

Is Windows Defender better than MSE was? Because if it isn't, I'm absolutely not going to use it.

Well seeing as it is MSE re-branded and MS are dropping support of MSE for windows 8 then I would think its the same/better.
