Don't forget the accelerometer controlled knob shading on iOS 6.
yep, tilt the phone around, the knobs shine differently like brushed metal does
What's this called officially? That sounds pretty neat I'd like to see a video of it.

It's called attention to detail. It is now apparently a bad thing.
Really terrible video, but it gets the point across

Hooray for portrait recording!
I mean. Why does nobody know landscape recording exists? I get that a portrait recording plays back nice on a phone, but it's awful on a TV, monitor, tablet, whatever.
It is now apparently a bad thing.
How do you mean?
How do you mean?
It goes under the category of skeumorphic design so it goes in with all the other parts of the UI people here hate.
It's not attention to detail though
it's skeuomorphism. the volume slider isn't made of brushed metal.

also i really like how the world's most advanced mobile operating system doesn't have U.S. holidays on the calendar.

Just because it's a skeuomorphic design doesn't mean it isn't attention to detail. You do realize those things can be combined right? It wasn't there before and it was put in as a small detail that adds to the UI. Apple could also make it so the shadows behind the icons move corresponding with the ambient light sensor. It'd be a skeuomorphic design but it's attention to detail in the interface.
Also the podcasts app.
Average age of iPhone users is probably somewhere around 20
how many iPhone users even know what a reel-to-reel tape deck is?

And honestly, making something look shiny doesn't scream attention to detail
it screams
we have 200 features
we want 200+
"we can make things shiny based on the accelerometer" -- intern
I think Garry made this thread intentionally to troll the shit out of H&S.
Have nobody else noticed the suuuuuper fast safari?
It's sooo much faster and browsing LMAO thread thing is now possible without much lag and crashes.
I never crashed whilst on lmao pics but it did lag, always like to see improvements to the browser
skeuomorphism just gets too tacky
i don't need to see a shredder shred it
just delete the pass
My biggest problem with that is that it could be misleading. Shredding is associated with secure and total destruction of data. Are we sure that iOS is securely destroying the data when it does that?

Do we know how accurate this data is as of September 2012, more than a year later?
It's called attention to detail. It is now apparently a bad thing.
I wouldn't call it attention to detail - more like an easter egg. It's not a bad thing, but I think we can all agree on that it's kind of pointless, though fun.

I wish it was more flexible. I want to have more fine control over colors and animations.

I wouldn't have expected it to change. Android and iOS attract different types of people, that's the point. Mostly the same people are buying iPhones and the same other people are buying Android phones. There would be some jumping ship but the demographics would likely be very similar today, probably near identical.
Can't enable wifi :/ the switch is grayed out and no way to solve it.
I've read that Apple have a bunch of people working hard on this, but ugh this is annoying.
Might not even be able to upgrade iOS from the phone without wifi.......

The WiFi issue was nothing like what you just described, and it was solved after like an hour. I think you've got some other issue.

I know, but there are luckily(for me) many people with this grayed out problem. I hope it's fixed soon, and that i can download iOS 5.0.1 over 3G.
Yeah, skeumorphism is like the best thing ever:

Seriously, iOS is a mess of different textures - do we really need our calendar app have cheesy leather all over? Or have a blackboard coming up? There's really no reason why they tack on this stuff.
well remember, it was Steve Jobs who wanted Skeuomorphism, the product designer who made every design aspect we associate with Apple, Jonathan Ive, hate skeuomorphism, he and Jobs would fight about it
I honestly don't mind either way. If the interface is clear and easy to understand and use with little wasted space, I don't complain.
I don't think skeuomorphism is a bad thing, so long as it doesn't interfere with functionality.
Like in the above quoted image with Game Center, the wooden toolbar doesn't affect anything, therefor, in my opinion, it's nothing to get worked up about. The inner bit where the icons are is however. But if it's a UI where you have to do something like "pull" a lever, or "rotate" a knob, or actually move a switch and if you don't move it all the way it snaps back to its previous setting, then yeah, I can see it being annoying and a pain in the ass.

Luckily the only part it really does that at is the lockscreen and that's common for most phones nowadays.

Now, hopefully we'll get more details on whether it applies to A5/A5x devices and if it's tether/untethered.

the shredder is silly, but honestly unless you start deleting like 10 passbook entries at a time it's not going to be really annoying
of course, y'know, making it fly off the screen never to be seen again is a perfectly good, visually enticing option
but the general UI elements that resemble things that we're familiar with IRL - I don't see a problem. it's kinda like a new take on a classic element (and IIRC that's basically what skeuomorphism is there to accomplish.)
