They keep the numbers to keep people from getting confused between new versions and updates, the 3GS and 4S, which people usually refer to when talking about the iPhone unlike the iPad where it's just referred to as "iPad'.

Anyone here ever install team speak to a Linux server? I am / was having problems with the server not booting and waiting for GRUB to select my Ubuntu server install - it seems as if teamspeak did it too it... plsu it wasnt restarting or powering off properly when i installed it TL:DR - maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkoooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought they're doing the same for the iPad seeing as how it's being called the iPad HD by everyone, and not an iPad 3.

All I said before is that I looked at the new iPad once, and at that time people were calling it the iPad HD because they didn't know if Apple was really naming it the iPad without a number or something added after. The only place I've seen it is on twitter because I follow several tech blogs. They were probably adding the HD because they upped the resolution. I couldn't care less what it was being called.
