For a cheap laptop I would pick up a used or refurb think-pad. My dad got me a Lenovo Ideapad z560 for my birthday in August for right under $400. It was a steal, but I wish he had asked me so I could also chip in and get a real thinkpad. I was instantly sold on getting one after ivy bridge releases when I drunkenly spilled alcohol all over my friend's laptop. He was drunker than me and when he started laughing I was scared for my life. He just unplugged it, brought it to his bathroom and put it under the faucet.
